OK..hope I don't get lynched for this as it's not even December 1st yet, but I am just wondering what everyone's favourite Christmas Tune is.
Mine has to be 'Fairytale of New York'.
I love it..as it captures all the emotions that a lot of people associate at that time of year, sadness in the midst of so much happiness. It's a great tune.
I also love 'Winter Wonderland'....in my humble o. it is the perfect Christmas song.
And I like a good rendetion of 'O HOLY NIGHT'...
and 'Jingle Bell Rock'...

Off you go...........

The two I never get tired of hearing and which are two of the cheesiest are Wizard's "I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day" and Slade's "Merry Christmas Everyone". They both always getting me humming and tapping my toes. I also love Greg Lake's "I Believe in Father Christmas".

Has to be "Fairytale of New York" for me too.
I love it when I'm out in the pub in the run up to Christmas and that comes on. can't beat it. the whole place just goes mad.

I also like "Oh Holy Night" when it gets sung by the choir at mass on Christmas Eve - it just makes me feel very Christmassy indeed.

I'm also going for "Fairytale of New York" - it's such a classic, and became even more poignant on Kirsty MacColl's tragic death.
I also like Chris Rea's "Driving Home for Christmas", and "2000 Miles" by The Pretenders.

I Believe In Father Christmas :whistling:

My fav christmas pop song, brill sound and great great lyrics

:drinking:They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on Earth
But instead it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the Virgin's birth
I remember one Christmas morning
A winters light and a distant choir
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas Tree smell
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire
They sold me a dream of Christmas
They sold me a Silent Night
And they told me a fairy story
'Till I believed in the Israelite
And I believed in Father Christmas
And I looked at the sky with excited eyes
'Till I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn
And I saw him and through his disguise

I wish you a hopeful Christmas
I wish you a brave New Year
All anguish pain and sadness
Leave your heart and let your road be clear
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on Earth
Hallelujah Noel be it Heaven or Hell
The Christmas you get you deserve.

La la la la la la la la la la.... :drinking:

Hello Aondeag

Good choices, Kirsty Macall and the pogues plus a few others. My favourite is a christmas carol is Often called O HOLY NIGHT but then I also Silent Night.
The two are ofetn confused but they are not one and the same one is German and the other if French, I am biased a bit liking the french one the most. If I learn how to handle down loading etc, I may put my four part recording of it into a christmas thread closer to the time.

Have you had a look at the new christmas skin yet for SO?

Hi Maureen..
when you talk about 'O Holy Night', is it the 'O HOLY NIGHT..THE STARS ARE BRIGHTLY SHINING..'...
I Love that one...do you know anything about the origins of it.
( I know about the origins of 'Silent Nigh', but nothing about the origins of O Holy Night...)
Much obliged...AD.

Hello Aondeag,

I always think of holy night as a french basque carole, as it has a Cantione as its base tune, from such other variations can - if desired, be layered upon it.

When I first came upon it, I had been told a lovely story. That on christmas eve during the Franco prusssian war the warring factions ceased fighting, to sing christmas carols. The two carols were Silent night (Heilege genacht) and O holy night (Cantique de Noel) the two carols blended beautifully in the distance biting into the cold night air, the stronger carol of the two being the french carol. (Apologies for any bias, my mother was french.)

Sounds romantic and idyllic doesn't it?

The real story is that the music came first. Adolf Adam was born in Paris in1803, he was a successful writer of French ballet music. Giselle his most noted. He had trained at the Paris Conservatoire but decided when young to write music for the theatre. By the age of 20 his songs were of an extremely light hearted nature sang in many Parisian Vaudeville theatres. (No doubt the sort Napoleon thought debauched and thoroughly entertaining) He wrote his first opera in 1829, however falling out with the eminent director of the Paris OPera Comique he founded his own company in 1847. A year later political turmoil and Revolution in France closed his theatre, leaving him with masses of debts. He thus returned to writng light music, reviews, and some teaching, by 1852 he had several successful productions, paying off his debts. Sadly, he died in his sleep aged 52 in 1856.

In December of 1847, Placide Cappeau, a commissioner of fine wines and a part time poet from Southern france, travelled to talk with Adam, who had just agreed to set to music his christmas poem;- Cantique de Noel. This was O holy night, which was sadly never published in Adam's lifetime appearing for the first time in 1858. The song travelled to London, and America. The standard English translation by John S Dwight (1813- 1893) Co founder of the HArvard music Society.

Hoping this answers your curiosity. I too love it. It is my favourite of all time.

O HOLY NIGHT

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Saviours birth;
Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
Till he appeared and the sould felt it's worth-
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn-
Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices,
O night divine, O night when christ was born;
O night divine, o night, o night divine.

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,
With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand;
So led by light of a start sweetly gleaming,
here came the wisemen from the orient land-
The king of kings lay thus in lowly manger
In all our trials born to be our friend-
He knows our need, to our weakness no stranger,
Behold you king, before the lowly bend-
Behold your king, before the lowly bend
Behold you king, your king before him bend.

Truly he taught us tolove one another,
His law is love and his gospel is peace;
Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother,
And in his name all oppression shall cease-
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise his holy name -
Christ is the lord, then ever, ever praise we
His power - and glory - ever more proclaim-
His power - and glory - ever more proclaim.

Enjoy.

Excellent site Secrets. I must be the only one who hasn't heard of Fairytale of New York. I was pleased to see it on your site. Of course, now I've listened to it I realise I have heard it but not a fave of mine. (OK, OK, I've obviously got no taste in Christmas music).

Current favourite is "Oh Holy Night" - preferably sung by G4 of course :)

I was trying to think when I first saw this thread of my favourite, but couldn't decide.
But I tell you, after seeing a 6 year old gorgeous petite little girl sing this song at my sons Xmas school show, it just brought it all back.

The song, or rather hymn is "In the bleak midwinter" but it's one verse that, just for me, is the killer (tears in the eye at the concert type thing)

What can I give him, poor as I am.
If I were a shepard, I would give a lamb.
If I were a wise man, I would do my part.
But what can I give him, give him my heart.

Bah! Christmas songs, carols whatever you call them. I can't stand 'em and you know why? Because they think they're soooo good and take all the glory whilst Easter has no songs! Christmas is a passing phase people, wake up! In ten years time we will be singing songs about a bunny that doesn't even exsist! It's the great circle of life...

Hello Aondeag,

I know you're away at present, so I hope you get this when you return.

In the bleak midwinter is a lovely carol very gentle and sweet.

You mention Liam Lawton. He has a fine voice, and is a wonderful song writer and composer of music in his own right. The record company I have been in talks with since the beginning of the year gave me all the details I needed - in connection to management etc, but also requested that he should forward new compositions to me - if he ever again decides to write in the same fashion as Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The reason why you probably like his version of the carol could well be, because he is a minister of the church. Can't remember which, but as there both christian it doesn't really matter. He is well liked in America and also has a website.

Hopefully hear from you in the new year. Enjoy yourself.
