I was listening to the radio earlier - and apparently they have suspended fire fighting operations as they do not know what is in one of the tanks

Don't Total keep records???

That does seem very odd that they don't know what is in there.

I heard that the initial explosion was actually recorded by earthquake monitoring equipment as 2.5 on the richter scale!!

PJ - I'm sure you'll have heard by now, but basically an oil depot went kabooom Sunday morning at about 6am. Nobody killed, but 2 people seriously injured.

I dont know how true it is, but apparently they were having maintenance work done at the time of the explosion.

If it is true .... someone is in BIG trouble.

I am astounded at the size of the black cloud that has poured from it since ... surely someone must have seen it??

Hello Mazwad,

Watched this news on TV. The explosion(s) destroyed a street of houses and the noise of this could be heard a good number of miles away.

The pictures in the press look very gloomy for central London, but the emergency services are confident they can get things sorted out even though it will not resume normality for several weeks and months. Especially, since they were concerned that at the beginning this would not only stretch there services to the hilt - but maybe find it beyond them. Still with services travelling from as far north as Humberside and Cleveland the situation should at least become manageable.

My friend worked in Hemel Hempstead some time ago and she is keeping me ahead in the news due to living close by. I don't think there have been to many fatalities but of the numbers injured I couldn't say as yet.

I hazard a guess that this may result in an in depth public enquiry, lead by the health and safety excecutive, checking for any breaches in the working environment, and whether in fact Total have kept totally accurate records, particularly ones on rights of access and hazardous labelling.
