Green Day Bash Bush At End of Year Bash

December 19 2005

Green Day finished 2005 in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday night before 37,000 fans by bashing US President Bush. Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong sent “a big **** you to George W. Bush” while he strutted the stage draped in an Australian flag. The audience loved it.

Green Day have just had their best ever year off the back of their angriest ever album. The ‘American Idiot’ record has sold more than 10 million copies now worldwide and the American President should be thanked for the inspiration. “My name is Billie Joe Armstrong and I was sent to make George ****ing Bush’s life a ****ing nightmare” he screamed, again with full support of the fans.

Armstrong was relentless with the message. “No matter who we elect into office, don’t let them dictate your life. We are the leaders” he said off the back of “Minority”.

This was the Green Day at their best. The vitriolic performance with punctuated with songs from across their entire career dating back to the Operation Ivy cover ‘Knowledge’ which they recorded before the breakthrough album ‘Dookie’.

Armstrong also paid tribute to Australia’s The Living End who he said had sent him a demo tape during Green Day’s first Australian tour some ten years ago. The Living End’s Chris Cheney made two appearances at the show, first dressed up as a Bunny before Green Day hit the stage and later on guitar as they cover the Bobby Fuller 4 classic ‘I Fought The Law’.

Green Day setlist for Melbourne, Telstra Dome, Saturday. December 17.

There was an article in the paper saying that Green Day were really good and then towards the end of it they started to say that U2's concert will be better since it has sold out more.

1) U2 appeals to nearly all ages. Green Day is aimed at my age

2) U2 haven't been to Australia for ten years and Green Day came in March so most people would have seen the show then.

Because although I do believe that people should express their opinion, I don't agree with it being done in an angry way, and the way Greenday seem to display it reeks of hostility. Just MO.

I bought "Bullet in a Bible" yesterday. It's a good thing to have but I think Green Day should change the concerts a little bit because it was kinda the same as the concert I went to, but we had a few more songs...

OK, I wrote this for this website. A bit different to the other one:

What can I say? Last night was honestly just incredible. I was incredibly disappointed that I was not in the Idiot Zone as I got my tickets Saturday and on Monday they released more Idiot Zone tickets. Really annoyed. But my god that was good. The GA was still good because I was able to breath!

Classic mix of new songs and old songs (disappointed that When I Come Around was not played), with the highlight songs being Jesus of Suburbia and St.Jimmy.
Crowd went absoulutley nuts for Longview and Hitchin A Ride, giving Billie Joe the urge to touch himself up a bit.

Tre was fun, going nuts at the start of Shout, and the addition of the members of the crowd on stage left 60,000 people very jealous. Young guitarist got to keep the guitar (worth a bloody fortune now), the drummer some drumsticks, and unfortunatley for the young female bassist, she was left with nothing but the memory (which she may have lost on the crowd surf out).

Great moment of the night was before the boys were even on stage, as the roof, which was closed for My Chemical Romance and Jimmy Eat World opened up, allowing for the spectactular fireworks display.

Billie Joe is a true entertainer, revving up the Aussie crowd by drinking our beer, waving our flag, touching up his guitar as the Aussie flag and bringing the Living End guitarist Chris Cheney on stage, as well as playing the classic Aussie song Shout, by Johnny O'Keefe. Not to mention sudden outbursts of Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi.

Only disappointments was When I Come Around and Nice Guys Finish Last not being played, not playing a Living End song with Cheney, not being in the Idiot Zone despite a ridiculous amount of space left (would have looked ugly from the stage), and the lackluster performance from Jimmy Eat World.

Otherwise, brilliant.
