View Full Version : Working over Christmas
Dolores 23-12-2005, 07:58 PM is anyone working over the Christmas and New Year period?
I've finished work now and don't have to go back until 3rd Jan!! Yippee!
But I was wondering what time anyone else had off over Christmas? Anyone unlucky enough to be working Christmas eve? or even worse Christmas Day?
Mellors 23-12-2005, 08:08 PM No, definitely NOT working over Christmas, not even if I get offered triple time and time off, no chance no way. God I need a rest
msgirl 23-12-2005, 08:23 PM Hubby got off last Sunday at noon and doesn't go back till Jan. 5, 2006. He works a 12 hour day weekend shift. Four days one week (Th-Sun) and three days the next week (Fri-Sun). I have four days free from any subbing this week and next week as all the nursery schools I sub for are closed this Friday and Monday as well as next Friday and Monday. And I may not even have a call to sub next week as most places are usually low on children due to vacations and out of town visiting. So I guess I'm a free bird too.
floopy 23-12-2005, 09:50 PM Cockney's Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, but that's part of the job, being a DJ. Plus he gets paid shedloads for those two nights of the year, so he can't really afford not to.
I don't mind, cos with the little ones there's no point in us both sitting in, and they're too little to go to parties yet, so tra la.
I know he'd love to see New Year in with his friends and family one year though, so maybe one year we'll be able to do something like that, but hey.
He did say today that he'd have liked to not have to work on Christmas Eve so he could be home dressing up as Santa Claus and doing daddy things with the children, but they're too young to appreciate it anyway at the moment.
I'm working all day today but then I have 4 days off before I have to go in again. I also have to work on Monday 2nd January but to be honest I don't mind, as everything has finished by then.
No way!
Finished until the third of January. Time to collect my thoughts count my cash and head up to Scotland where I'm going to jump up and down on the hills!
maxine 24-12-2005, 08:18 AM I'm working today and will be back on Wednesday. Boo.
Critique 24-12-2005, 09:14 AM I think this really belongs on the Good News/Bad News thread.
Mr. C usually only has Christmas Day and Boxing Day off (the Railways) but this year it co-incides with his "rest days" and some holiday he was due so he was supposed to finish today until after the New Year (hooray).
Unfortunately he's woken up with a terrible cold/flu (even though he's had the flu jab) so he can't go in today and doesn't feel very Christmassy (booo!)
Never mind, I'm all ready and prepared so will just have to pamper him :)
Hats off to all those loverly people who have to work Christmas Day to keep things ticking over - Doctors, Nurses, Police, Carers, etc.
mazwad 24-12-2005, 11:43 AM Sorry to see my bruvs not well Crit, Mr M is in the same boat coughing sore eyes and heady. I have just been out to get him menthol crystals to inhale hope its gonna help as we have a housefull tomorrow.
I finished work yesterday and don't have to return until 3rd Jan. Looking forward to the long break and hoping I get a good book for xmas.
Schools are closed so I'm not working:D
In my student days though I once worked in a bar on Christmas morning though - strangely enough I really enjoyed it!!

secrets 24-12-2005, 11:00 PM Only just got back from my annual week away pre christmas - nicely chilled now - and do not have to do much until the third.
*Did i tell you that Elvin Stardust, the Dreamers (minus Freddie), and Buck's Fizz were still all alive and kicking?*
I finished on Friday [23rd] and am back in on the 28th - not that I mind one bit, I have hunting paraphanalia to send out, game to investigate and the usual stuff - plus I have a 25 foot Xmas tree for company, and tons of glorious left overs to stuff my face on - I will be alone until the 3rd of Jan.
Bonsai 27-12-2005, 10:37 AM My last day at work was 22nd december .... but i do have to work on Friday. I dont mind really. I will be on my own, and im doing a 10-4pm, so it wont be a massively long day. I will take my new book into work, and a turkey sarnie to keep body and soul together. I will also have a wander around the sales during the lunch time
Coastie 27-12-2005, 01:18 PM My shifts have fallen wonderfully this year (I had top work all over Christmas last year).....I am working to day and finich again on the morning of the 31st for 4 days...wooo woooo....I have also just had 12 days off for leave! :kid:
I have been working full time all Christmas, only had the actual day and boxing day off (thank god, thought we would open that day this year!)
Also had to get up at 4am a couple of days ago, ready for the shop to open at 5. Why why WHY would you go shopping at that time of morning?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I finish on Saturday though, so its not too bad.
I'm bloody knackered though!

have you noticed that I chose not to reply to your question!
Andrea 29-12-2005, 04:10 PM Hubby took an extra few days off before Xmas, so he's not back until after the new year.
My course closed for the holidays and I don't have to go back until something like the 9th January.
So no work for us over Christmas.
But this will probably be the last one for a while as next year I will be in full time work, and working shifts, so I will be working either new year or Xmas.
So I'm making the most of this last holiday period before all that starts up.
have you noticed that I chose not to reply to your question!
I noticed that you didn't reply.....
But someone gave me good rep for this!!

Back on topic. I worked today. When I say worked. I was there between 10 and 4 and answered a few phone calls. Not back now until next Tuesday. Hoorah!

maxine 29-12-2005, 06:27 PM Good things about working during the Christmas/New Year break is that Mr M is doing all the cooking, washing, ironing and cleaning and has even been out and bought 2 new vacuum cleaners today. So it's not all bad!

It looks like a strangely disembodied alien. How appropriate.
Bonsai 30-12-2005, 11:06 AM Im sat in work right now .... but i wont be staying long.
Its a blizzard outside - and im worried about getting home !!! Plus im all alone in here, we havent had a single phone call, we had 2 letters in the post, im bored ... and quite frankly i cant be ar*sed to sit here.
The bosses are in spain and portugal, so they wont know if i bunk off a little early ... will they
Bonsai 30-12-2005, 01:56 PM Well, i have done nothing today. I made one phone call .... and spoke to an answer machine !! I opened the post - gave myself a few jobs for next Tuesday as they cant be done today. And thats it.
I have braved the weather and walked to the shops twice - once for food, and the 2nd time for stuff in Boots to play with.
I have now come back, balanced my cheque book (and winced), painted my nails, applied my new nail polish and taken 2 Daynurse as im poorly sick.
Mr.B is in the pub (and taking great delight in telling me) and im hosting a party later this afternoon. I have things to do ... i need to go home .... i will skive off very very soon.
