Hello survivors,
There are a few good books, I find myself drawn to time and time again.
This is one of them: "TEACHERS"'First-hand views of the classroom crisis'.(by Frank E Huggett,. George Weidenfeld & Nicolson Limited,.1986.
The reason why I am drawn to this book, is due to who the experiences relate to. They are all teachers all 50, including the Editor.
Mr Huggett is no ordinary editor, he was educated at Emanuel School and Wadham College, Oxford, he is a well known social historian and travel writer. After working as a Fleet Street journalist he taught briefly, in a secondary school, and then lectured at polytechnics and universities in this country and abroad.
Here is a sample of a few one liners - opinions of the teachers in this book:-
'Many of the mums simply haven't got a clue'Nursery school teacher.
'We are being overloaded with paper and policies'First school teacher.
'He would kick, bite, thump, scratch and headbut'Junior teacher.
I've never come across a child who's resented me because I'm black'
Comprehensive teacher.
There isn't any pressure from parents to maintain standards'Independent school teacher.
am absolutely horrendous journey on coaches with people being knifed'State school teacher.
'If you're teaching something like government and politics bias does come into it'Teacher in a sixth form college'.
'Examinations turn kids into fact gluttons'Former comprehensive teacher.
'It's awful when you're feeling flat. The kids just squash you completely'Probationary teacher.
'There is never time to do anything properly'Comprehensive teacher.
'The school system is still a purveyor of white, middle-class values'Junior school teacher.
I think any wanabe teacher, should make this a compulsory read; before becoming one.
This book is one of the finest I have read from cover to cover. There is nothing taxing in it, it is a straight forward read which details all areas of teaching experience, in a light and refreshing way. (Occassional bad language being overlooked.)
