How are you when it comes to books?

Do you have any little things that simply must be?

For instance...

I have to own a book before I can 'enjoy' reading it. If I borrow a book the pressure of having to return it (even if the lender says that there is no deadline) takes away a huge part of my enjoyment of it...I don't mind second hand books (in fact I have loads) but I simply must own it to really enjoy it...Daft I know.

The other thing with books is I hate bending the spine...I always read with the book just open enough to be able to read the pages, hence, all my books always look new (unless they were second hand in the first place).

On the book shelf they have to be stacked in size order. Big books at the ends and downward arc to the smaller books. I hate those long/short books as I never know where to put them! :ranting:

So do you have any particular bookie quirks?

Hmmmm, im not AS weird as you

I know what you mean about borrowing books though. Even when i take them out of the library i feel a massive pressure to read them quickly. Or i cant be bothered to read them at all and end up taking them back to get rid of them.

I get a lot of joy from books, but i am a bit of a summer reader. I enjoy sitting in the garden with a G&T, with Mr.B weeding in the background.

To me book covers are important. I often wander into book shops not knowing what to buy, or which author to concentrate on. So it all tends to hinge on the covers. If the cover looks interesting, i will read the back - if it doesnt it stays on the shelf.

I too have a book case, with them lined up 4 deep. I like to keep the books i have bought - but its very rare for me to read them twice.

I also HATE lending books to other people. I have had one too many go missing, and it really annoys me. I have paid good money for that book, and they mislay it !!!!! I also lent a friend a book that was immaculate when she was given it. I never turn pages on books and always use a book mark. When i got it back it had pages turned over and there were mucky kids finger marks on nearly every page. That to me shows total disrespect.

Ooo yes Bonnie...I hate it when people fold the corner of the page..hate it, hate it, hate it! Hence I make it very clear to those who borrow my books that they shouldn't dare tweak my page corners:ranting: ...I even go so far as lending them a Joker from a pack of playing cards (my prefered book mark) so they have something to marke the page with...

Oh and what's with the whole underlining thing...grrr :evilmad:

I think this is the reason that I found it hard when I borrowed books from the library. It takes me time to read a book and can sometimes take a few weeks before I have finished, so the pressure of having to return the book kind of gets in the way. Plus have you seen the state of some of the library books?! urgh, they are disgusting and they don't seem to have an up to date choice.

I do enjoy buying books, it is one of pleasures in life - I love browsing in Waterstones. There used to be a fantastic bookshop in Edinburgh called James Thin's and it was in one the buildings in the old town, just off the High Street and it was fab. It was full of wee nooks & crannies and the people who worked there were really friendly and informative, sadly as it wasn't a chain it could not compete with the likes of Waterstone and the internet etc and had to sell up.

Sorry, a bit off-topic but I do also hate people who turn down book covers!! I have a few book shelves although I did have a bit of a clear-out not so long ago and got rid of quite a lot of books that I just knew that I would never read again. So at the moment by book shelf needs restocked!

I don't mind people borrowing books but I would like them back and do feel a bit of prat when I ask if they have read it after they have it for about 6 months.

I am steadily building up Katie's collection of books and getting all the ones that I had as child. I enjoy reading them to her although Charlotte's Web proved a bit difficult with a lump in my throat!

I have found many a pube in a library book. You never know what to do when you find one. Do you pluck it out, do you shake it in the bin, or do you leave it there for the next unsuspecting victim ?

LOL Bonnie, it's puts a whole new meaning into reading in bed!!

We used to go to the library once a week with the school when we were kids and I chose my book to take home. Got home started reading and a few pages in and there was this little bookworm thingy crawling up the page. So being a kid I went into a hysterical panic and threw the book across the room. I don't know to this day if Bertie the Bookworm survived his first flying experience!

I'm terrible for hoarding books - actually that's not true I'm very good at hoarding books! I very rarely throw, or give a book, away.

I'm another one who has to own the book - it just doesn't feel right borrowing it.

Bella...your book shop comments are not off topic...this thread is about you and books in general and you just hit on a subject matter within that that to be honest I hadn't thought of originally...wel done you

I have been known to spend many a happy hour trawling through bookshops...I don't always buy anything but can often be found gazing for minutes on end at the section of books on subjects I'm interested in...also in the bigger stores there is always a corner to smooch down in for a while and read a few choice bits! :naughty:

As for the hoarding thing I am terrible at getting rid of books even if I know I probably wont read them again...I think it is largely because most of my books are collections...like Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series, Ian Rankins Rebus or Karin Slaughters fantastic crime thrillers. I simply could never bring myself to break up a collection of books and well...who would want to get rid of an entire collections at once!

Bon Bon...eeew...yet another reason for me not to borrow from the library...thanks for that

I try not to bend the spines of paperbacks too.....unless it's a travelguide book - I like to see a travelguide that looks like it's been to the place it's about.

My reason for not liking to lend books is that I don't like it when the spines come back bent.
If it's not a favourite book that someone wants to borrow, I will usually give it away rather than lend it. Or ask the borrower for a book they don't want anymore and swap it.

I have some stickers I bought in a bookshop for sticking inside that say 'this book belongs to.......' I put these in my favourite books. It has to be a special book to deserve one.

I've not read a library book for years - and I'm glad if what Bonnie found is the norm!!! urgh!!

I have a plan to collect second hand books and sell them for charity - I've only got 50 or so so far, and the boxes to keep them in. I think it's a good plan though - I really must get my finger out!

Coastie
09-03-2006, 05:33 PM
That's scarey Minks...my travel guides are all scraggly looking mainly because they ahve been well used and I love that look for them but my regular paperbacks have to stay straight, uncreased and as perfect to new as possible!

Will you be selling your second hand books locally or via e-bay etc?

Minklemar
09-03-2006, 05:44 PM
hey! isn't that odd, about the travel books :)

I'm not sure how I'll be doing the selling yet..... I thought about ebay...but I'm guessing that the postage is going to be more than I'll get for most of the books. I've never sold on ebay, so I don't know how easy it is either.
I thought about maybe carboots and jumble sales, and selling them to friends and maybe even asking if I can put something on the intranet at work.
I think ebay would probably be my best bet....but if there's a lot of work involved in it I just might not be able to keep up with it.
I need to give it some more thought really.

Coastie

Depending on where you work you could ask the boss (if that isn't you) if it's okay to bring a box of books in each day or so and explain to everyone what your intentions are behind the selling...

You need only bring in about ten or so a day for people to look at and say a price. Change a few each time you bring the box in and it would at least be a start! :naughty:

Also if you know which charity you will be selling for and don't mind a bit of leg work, you can get them to write you an official letter which you can produce as you go door to door locally...again only take around ten books at a time and stick to the local area for starters...this way it wont take long for people to browse your collection and if you need to top up from home you can!

It's approching the start of the holiday season so it would be a good time to start...lots of people read on holiday!

Thanks for the tips Coastie - much appreciated.
I'm part of the speakers network for the charity (it's the one I went to Sri Lanka with last year and I'm going to Sierra Leone with them this year).
I do have one of their collection boxes that I can use for people to put the payments into.

I think I'll start at work and see how it goes there - there are 100 or so people in my building 100's more on the rest of the site.

Another thing I thought of....which bookmark I use depends on how much I'm enjoying the book I'm reading. If it's great I have a material one I use....if it's ok it's a papyrus one, if it not very good it'll be an appointment card or a receipt..
I start with the appointment card/receipt and if the book is good I'll swap to one of my others...if not the receipt is used til the end of the book.

Rob

I've had the same bookmark for years - and I always use it! It's getting a bit tatty now!

I don't mind borrowing from or lending books to others, I do however get a tad annoyed when people turn down the corners of the pages, there is no need for it - use a bookmark!!

I hate letting books go too, I am hoping to get a huge bookcase when I get the extension done so I can have them all together and not in piles next to the bed.

I have to admit I am a bit of a sucker for covers too and good reviews. The R & J book club has had some good books but I have only bought 2 of them! The first one was The Time Traveller's Wife which is excellent (and I gave it to a friend and still have not got it back) and the other one was Cloud Atlas. This had a lovely, graphical cover almost romantic really but I found it really hard to get into. I think Kooky bought it too, did you ever finish it Kooky? I would like to go back and have another go at it though.

When I'm reading a book, I always have the urge to dig the nail on my pinky into the front and back covers, whilst holding the book and reading it. I don't know why but I just have to do it or I get all agitated. Miss PJ loaned me a book once and was raging when I gave it back with indentations all over the cover.

I don't read as much as I should really. When I'm on a reading roll I tend to go the the library. When it's holiday books I always go to the charity shops and then I don't need to bring them back from my holiday.

Coastie
10-03-2006, 12:29 PM
I have a friend who buys second hand books for her holidays for that same reason...I tried that tactic but found I couldn't just abandon the book and I wound up bringing it home. I dunno I just felt bad about leaving it...I am indeed a sentimental old fool when it comes to such things!

It's interesting how many people say that they really should read more...why?

Who decides how much we should be reading and would reading more than we do really make a huge difference in our lives?

I read a fair bit simply because I love stories, real life or otherwise, however, I would probably read more if I didn't write so much...kinda balance of time thing. I know that the amount of reading I do and have done since a child has helped immensely with regards my writing and also it's amazing ow many pub quiz questions I have been able to answer simply because I have read a book at some stage that held the answer.

I know people who have barely read a book in their lives (my dad reads the paper alot but has only ever really read two books in his 50+ years). They seem to have the same amount of useless knowledge kicking about in their heads and I wonder where it has come from at times...although I suspect the television!

I always read for a little while in bed every night before going to sleep - I find it helps me clear my head of things that might stop me sleeping.
I read until I'm tired enough to sleep - I'm sure the reading helps me drop off to sleep easier

Coastie
10-03-2006, 01:20 PM
I have tried reading before bed but tend to find that I get really sleepy and then as soon as I turn the light out I'm wide awake again...really annoying...so I just go to bed now and lay there for an hour anyway because reading simply means I will be awake for even longer. :bored:

However...I do tend to nod off in the armchair when reading...gosh what and old fart I'm becoming!

I don't understand people who read in the bath...mainly because I hate baths and the other reason is that well, with all that steam, it ruins the books!

Oooooo books, I love books and I too have some "quirky" ways with them......

I will read anything and I will read it anywhere, there are books ALL over my house......

on the desk infront of me there is:

Catherine Alliott - Rosie Meadows Regrets
Gillian McKeith - You Are What You Eat
Diarmuid Gavin - Design Your Garden
The Highway Code
Screwfix Direct Catalogue.....................

propping up the monitor on the PC is:

Jackie Collins - Lethal Seduction
Andy McNabb - Immediate Action

On the coffee table there is:

Wendy Holden - The Wives of Bath

With regards to how anal I am dear Coastie, yep, every bit as you darling, but not in the exact same ways.......

If I want to OWN a book then it has to be hardback and I will only lend it to my parents (as they are every bit as anal as me) and will nag the head off them till I get it back (just like THEY do with me!!!)......AND I will buy a really good book AFTER I have read it (from the library or if it was bought 2nd hand/borrowed), and will read it again and again - bit like some people watch movies I guess......

I have to admit though, I am a "corner of the page folder" to save my place :bag: I have picked up LOADS of bookmarks from the library but I always loose them, if I have something to hand I will use it, but it doesnt bother me if I dont if ya get me:unsure:

I can't really read in coffee shops..as it's too busy and bustley and i always get distracted.Other people's conversations are just amazing! :-)
I like reading in pubs tho'..while i'm waiting for the gang to turn up.Then when they turn up it's always at a great part in the book and I get a bit dismayed then.(not for long tho'.)
I buy about 4 books every month..when i get paid.
And i acquire them from other people too..and dont mind parting with my own, unless I love the cover or LOVE the book and know I will want to read it again.

You now have me thinking more about hiding away in the corner of a pub though Aon...a pint and a good book sounds a wonderful combination to me :bag:

By the way...I always have my notebook handy when in the public places as you never know when someone around you will come up with a great little line...only the other day a guy was describing something as '...resembling a tube map that had been soked in the rain!' - it conjured up a great image and I was dying to know what it was he had been referring to!

I tend to read in the coffe shops or between writing in my front room...when I haven't any films or TV to catch up on!

I have been know to walk along the street reading...I am very careful about avoiding bumping into people though and this is only something that can be cone on a nice day...otherwise the pages get wet!

Spooky thread Coastie, I was lying in bed last night thinking about books.

And my thoughts were thinking that I don't use a bookmark, although I do try, and I don't turn the pages down, but somehow - it must be a miracle - everytime I pick my book up to read it, it somehow opens at the last page I read.

I don't bend the spines or wipe snot or goo in my books.

I am a bit like Isis, if I am without, I feel like my arms have been chopped off and I will read shmapoo bottles, baked bean tins even the dictionary.

I have two piles in my bedroom; one pile is books I have read and will keep, the other pile is books I have read and those I will take to Barter Books to recycle, oh I suppose I have 3 piles cos the third is the books I am about to read.

__________________________________________________ ________

Sort of related theme, my Ma-in-Law took a pile of books into Barter Books to re-sell, they were her childhood books, she had studiously covered each and every one with paper [we are talking about 60 years ago] - she was offered 300GBP for a series of about 4 - 6 'girls' books.

Do you ever cover your books??

Coastie

We have a book exchange place but I very rarely use it and I'm sure he goes round the local charity shops, buy's up sets for £1.50 a book and then resales them for £3!

I tend to read in phases.
Lately I've had a few books on the go, but then I go for months not reading a book, but reading the local paper.
I always have to have something to read when I go out for a fag.
My little table out there gets piled up with papers and books until it falls off and I have to clear it up.

I'm not that anal about my books.
I don't use a bookmark, I just turn my book over and place it down open at the page I'm at.
I just gave away a load of books to freecycle.
Novels I can really only read once.
But my little computer books and travel books I keep.
Although I've kept all my Harry Potter books and the Northern Lights trilogy books even though I probably won't read them again.

I'm still trying read The Labyrinth, seems ok but a bit slow, so I've been reading it in fits and starts.
But a book that I get into really quickly I can read within week.

You are hearby charged with the crime of causing Grevious Bodily Harm to a book. The maximum penalty is the cancellation of your library card, a full ban on accessing any bookshop and the confiscation of all books within your care or lack of!

Oh god I'm SO in for a coastie earbashing too so.....

I have left books out in the backgarden in the rain that got black mouldy stains on when I finally rediscover them, I have dropped them in the bath, one child actually peed on one that was in the loo, and others have been covered in whatever I happen to be eating while reading in bed....

I go through about three books a week, nearly all novels, buy new and second hand ones, get them as gifts, borrow them and lend them freely.

Lord do they give me pleasure.......

All my favourites are dog-eared, broken-backed and full of sun-oil stains, chocolate smudges, pet's pawprints and with various odd phone numbers and odd little reminders on the fly-leaves. And the occasional squished insect.

I hate pristine books - they look unloved.

Oh, so this is what you meant by "book abuse" somewhere else, Coastie.

'Fraid I'm guilty, then. I love reading and I love books but I think of them as living things and treat them accordingly, rather than as museum pieces. I break spines and turn page corners over in almost every book I read - although not, curiously, in the old books I collect. Hmm. Yes, there is a difference in how I think of books to enjoy reading and books to enjoy collecting.

I'm another one who finds a good author and then seeks out and devours everything he or she has ever published. I read fast when I'm enjoying a book so that, for example, Ian Rankin only lasted me a couple of months last year. I'm looking forward to polishing off Neil Gaiman this summer.

I've read just about everything worth reading in my local library, and have found my share of pubes left from previous readers. I suppose public libraries will soon get their own dna test kits to run alongside their ID card machines so they can identify these strange pubic sharers.

My bookcases are very untidy. Book sizes don't matter. I arrange them according to authors and/or subject matter, or sometimes just because there's a hole that needs filling.

I love books to death - literally. I use and abuse them as I read through each chapter. I bend whole pages in half, sometimes grabbing a bunch. I fall asleep whilst reading so the book collapses to the floor. In the morning as I get out of bed I pick up my book and take it to the loo with me. I read for the whilst then leave said book on splayed face down and open on the corner of the bath. It has fallen in and been soaked on more than one occasion.

When I have finished I just toss it aside, spent and fullfilled. Later on I will put it in one of my bookcases I may lend it out but will always want it back no matter how battered. I like to have all books read on show as quite often friends and family talk about them, what they have read, what they would like to read. Recommending books to people is nice especially when they have enjoyed them.

A good book should be ravished.

I used to be quite precious about books - but now that I buy them for 50p - £1 at the charity shops I confess to bending corners etc. and I love it when I buy a book and it has a dedication on the inside cover - "from Blah to Blah, treasure this book, you are my treasure" heart felt from the giver, the receiver has tw@tted it straight to the charity shop

I recently had a clear out and amassed 10 boxes of books - and none of the local charity shops wanted them  ... Dol? hahahahha

lol! i have a book with a treasured dedication in it ... it has been propping up my gas meter for a number of years and is slightly warped from the damp, but i will always treasure it ... it is a book of playlets by Victoria Wood ... in the dim and distant and drunken past me and my friend acted them out drunkenly into an old fashioned tape recorder!!! it made us laugh for a while!!!!

I too love books but (ducks to avoid incoming from Coastie) take little or no care of them at all.......I borrow 8 books at month from the library & have never had so much as 1 pube fall out - unless I just haven't noticed! - & normally read them all within the month. I read on the train on the way to & coming home from work, in the bath, on the loo , while I'm cooking......everywhere & anywhere.......I turn the corners down & have been known to rip the corners off absentmindedly while reading, my books only though not the libraries..........I DON'T however, write in them to correct the grammar or spelling. That really bugs me.

On hols, I take books from the charity shop & leave the ones I've read there...........I have 2 binbags in the loft of books that I have read but local charity shops don't want & that I just can't throw out.
