View Full Version : Job Interviews
I have two job interviews tomorrow and I'm quite nervous about them.
Basically, I'm at the stage now where I choose what I want to do when I graduate (assuming that I do actually graduate of course). There are two options:
1) VT - which means working with a dentist in their practice for a year
2) GPT - same as above but then working in hospital environment and community centres for another year.
I have chosen the GPT option. There are very limited places for GPT posts but I thought I might try my hand at applying for it.
So, tomorrow I have an interview for the GPT training schemes in the west of Scotland and an interview for a GPT training scheme in oral surgery.
I won't be heartbroken if I dinnae get a GPT position as I'll be perfectly happy with a VT position but I might as well try. Think I'll be pretty nervous tomorrow though as I've heard the interviews are very difficult.
Anyway, that aside, have you had an interview from hell? Share it with us!
Seabreeze 09-03-2006, 05:53 PM WOW all sounds really good. Goodluck to you. Hope you get what you want. xx
Patsy 09-03-2006, 06:02 PM I had one once with a really scarey guy who looked like a wizard. I wore red shoes.
I'm such a rebel.

Red Shoes... Did you click the heels 3 times saying there`s no place like home...there`s no place like home...:kid:
Coastie 09-03-2006, 06:05 PM All the best Peej...and no...I have always done pretty well at interviews...or so I have been told...even if I didn't get all the jobs I applied for....always lost to someone with vast amounts experience when I never had any! :wallbash:
Peej...remember look them in the eye when you answer...looking away every fifteen seconds or so but not down or up, from left to right...
If you have a board in front of you asking questions...begin by answering to the person who asked the question. If the answer to the question is a long one then look occasionally to the others on the board as you speak but finish your answer back with the one who asked the question!
Take a second or so before opening your mouth to answer a question and try not to waffle.
Try not to fidget and don't sit with your knees to wide apart...you don't want to be showing off your lunch box...rest your hands on your knees...that way it will stop the risk of nervous twitches...hand to mouth and ear etc. Although if you tend to use hand gestures do go ahead but keep them subtle and return the hands to the knees on completion of your answer!
Lean ever so slightly forward when being asked a question...this shows you are interested in what the interviewer is saying...and sit up straight when answering...this shows you are confiedent but not cocky and in control!
Suit and tie is a must...first impressions work. Walk in tall, shoulders back and don't slump down in the seat! Smile as you receive their greeting...you are glad to be there!
Do a few neck rolls and small jumps before going in for your interview to releive any excess tension..
KNOCK 'EM DEAD! :naughty:
Patsy 09-03-2006, 06:09 PM And, after doing all this you haven't been committed to an institution, knock 'em dead. :good:

maxine 10-03-2006, 10:27 AM Good luck PJ. Do you have to do a practical?? Or is it purely on your qualifications and charm?
I've only ever had 3 interviews. Passed 2 and failed one.
Fee For All 10-03-2006, 10:37 AM Hope it's all going well PJ (or went well, by the time you read this!)
How soon will you hear the outcomes?
Well the first on ewas horrendous. Second one went better but I really dont know how well I answered and if it was the sort of stuff they wanted to hear or not.
I'll probably hear in a few weeks or so but to be honest I'm not too hopeful!
Oh well, of to the pub now!
Seabreeze 10-03-2006, 02:33 PM It probably went better than you think PJ. If you need more interviews you will know what to expect now so it`s all good experience as well. Will keep fingers crossed for you.
Bonsai 10-03-2006, 03:08 PM I hate interviews - i become tongue tied, and i sweat a lot (although maybe i shouldnt be sharing that with you  ).
BUT i have always been told that i have come across very confident in interviews, so the prospective employer thinks i have done a lot better than i thought.
I have always been offered every job i have ever applied for ..... so i think ive been very lucky.
Im sure you did fine PJ - have a drink on me.
Coastie 10-03-2006, 05:30 PM Peej - I'm sure you did better than you thought:good:
Now enjoy a few pints and remember we all love you!
Well all those who do love you anyway!
Dolores 10-03-2006, 05:41 PM I love interviews! I kind of act out a part and am totally relaxed about it. Although having said that I once had to go for a poo in the middle of one ... I still got the job though! (do you get it, job = job and it also = poo!!)
Hope it went well for you PJ ...you should have had a large vodka beforehand to relax ... no smell after just one you see!
mazwad 10-03-2006, 06:43 PM I hope you did well PJ enjoy your night out now and relax.
JakeyBoy 11-03-2006, 01:35 AM Well the first on ewas horrendous. Second one went better but I really dont know how well I answered and if it was the sort of stuff they wanted to hear or not.
I'll probably hear in a few weeks or so but to be honest I'm not too hopeful!
Oh well, of to the pub now!
I hope you get at least one of them alright. Actually, one out of two is better because then you wont have to choose which one you like better...
kookycat 13-03-2006, 02:51 PM good luck pj!!! hope you get it! although once you do does that mean relocating to oban or somewhere like that?
my last interview was for graduate training for Arcadia group in london. unfortunately i didnt get it because it was a group interview and i didnt speak up enough. which i thought a bit unfair as the group i was in had a lot of loud characters and given the circumstances it was very hard to have an input and i did speak quite alot. i was going for quality rather than quantity obviously didnt work, but they said the things i said were really relevant, i had excellent understanding of the role so based on that i thought i shouldve got it?
anyway my manager reckons i was robbed and she thinks the process is a bit unfair based on the grads she has seen over the years. so it probably is better i work my way up.
good luck pj!!! hope you get it! although once you do does that mean relocating to oban or somewhere like that?
God I hope not
I have only applied to the West of Scotland - even though Oban's in the west I don't think there are any GPT posts there he says hopefully...
Fee For All 13-03-2006, 04:38 PM Go to Kintyre PJ. There's so much inbreeding, they only have one tooth between them. It'll be a doddle
