View Full Version : Reserving "hellos"
Dolores 15-03-2006, 06:23 PM I know this is old ground, but so what!
I'm still bemused by the amount of "Hi" threads started up in Introductions, usually to posters who either post once in their introductions thread or who never post at all!
I'm not being unwelcoming but I'm also not being welcome to what is more or less just extra characters on the board! (or some other technical term that makes more sense!).
Can those who start them (and we know who you are!!) enlighten the miseries like me as to why you start them up?! Genuine question!
For my part Dollyprecious, I see the new name and a vision or a musing pops into my head, or I like to develop a theme with newpeople (i.e. blowing them up).
Tis harmless and it whiles away the hours and sometimes, well every now and again, well maybe once or twice a year someone stays.
One day it might be a fireman.

it is harmless that is true ... but also a tad pointless n'est pas?!
but as you say one day it might be a fireman!! :fireman: or two :fireman::fireman: ... which would be nice!
Bella 15-03-2006, 06:35 PM Dol, I very rarely post in the introduction threads. I think is mainly down to the fact that not very many newcomers actually stay or as you say even make a post! We have had a few new posters lately and none of them have made any posts yet.
Maybe we should have a new rule that you (the new poster) has to introduce themselves first before they make any others posts.
I joined a board a few months ago ( I need to get the code for my car and they can provide it for you) and I posted on a thread, and subsequently got told off for not introducing myself.
Does this sound like a good idea? Then it's up to the rest of the posters to say hello and make them welcome.
Seabreeze 15-03-2006, 06:49 PM Another msg board I go to they leave it until the new person actually introduces themselves but I`ve noticed on this board it was the other way round so I just joined in on the welcome wagon.
At the end of the day, when all said and done, it's only a few words. If you want to take the time to type them do so, if not then don't.....sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
I do think it's nice for new people to see that people bothered though..
I do think it's nice for new people to see that people bothered though..
Yes - but it would be nice if they bothered to post too!
I've never understood why anyone would go through the registration process and then never post - it seems pretty pointless to me!
As far as welcoming new people goes - I used to but I don't see the point anymore - unless they post - but if it makes you happy then go ahead and do it. If you don't like it it's easy to ignore the thread!
mazwad 15-03-2006, 09:05 PM I have to say I was nicely welcomed and that gave me the courage to post on here. It is annoying that so many people join and don't post but I suppose its the curiosity of looking into the threads that you can't see as a guest.
Most of the time I will welcome people as its only a few lines and a fraction of the time I spend on here.

Some people just want to see what's going on in the coffee lounge, it would seem!
Patsy 15-03-2006, 09:37 PM I would think it's quite daunting for some genuine newbies who first join a board, any board and having their own welcome thread would hopefully encourage them to post.
On the other hand, if they're just lurkers (or, dare I say it, ex-members) who are just coming for a nose, then they'll never respond anyway, as we know.
So I figure no harm done either way.
Some people just want to see what's going on in the coffee lounge, it would seem!
Obviously doesn't impress them!!
Groucho 15-03-2006, 11:42 PM it is harmless that is true ... but also a tad pointless n'est pas?!
Whereas the point of everything else that gets posted on SO is what, exactly? :glare:
msgirl 16-03-2006, 02:25 AM I'm just not sure anymore about taking the time if they aren't going to post!! I'm getting hard I guess, but you make the effort and you never see that person post. So, depending on the mood I'm in, I do or I don't. Quite depressing attitude I know.:glare:
Well I see no harm in it and will plough on regardless - when the mood takes me.

Stop going down the "Dolores is precious" route, laddie.
I know i haven't answered your question, but it's early in the mroning and I'm late!

Oh dear - do you know who's it might be?
Oh dear - do you know who's it might be?

.
Cat I hope you are 100% sure cos it isnae nice to make assumptions...
PM me the info please
Coastie 17-03-2006, 07:52 AM I don't say hello until the newbie has either posted elsewhere or has acknowledge the original welcome thread set up in their name.
Thgis is one of the reasons why I started a thread to welcome all newbies in one hit a while back...to give them a warm and fluffy welcome and at the same time reduce the need to spark up numerous other threads which fail to generate any form of response from the newbie they were dedicated to.
Maybe Haydon could simple have a hello all newbies thread which they can all read on arrival. It can also inform that until they start posting other posters will deem them a no post wonder and ignore them!
msgirl 18-03-2006, 03:43 AM "no post wonder", that's a good one Coastie!! Maybe when Haydon is axeing off the 0 posters he can say something like "sorrry but you have been chosen for deletion due to fact that you are a 'no post wonder'!!" I like it!!:w00t:
Coastie 18-03-2006, 07:58 AM Ooo I would love to go in a delete all 'No posts Wonders' that have been inactive for a month...that'll teach 'em! :naughty:
I could be brutal and say after a week but I feel a month is plenty of time for a newbie to get a feel of the place and decide if they want to post or not...:glare:
Maybe Haydon could sort an automatic membership cancellation thingy...but then I guess the more members registered, whether they post or not, makes the site look more popular so he may not want to do that:unsure:
floopy 18-03-2006, 11:59 AM Blimey, how many more rules can we think up to put people off? :glare:
Maybe we compile a questionnaire to put to new members to see if they'll suit us, and fit in with what we want the forum to be?
Que Sera, people, go placidly amidst the noise, etc
Coastie 18-03-2006, 01:22 PM I just hate too much clutter Floops and would like to see less welcome threads for no posters...and when I visit the members section...less no post members filling the page...I know this is of no concern to most people but for a clutter hater it becomes very annoying
Oh and can one of the questions in the questionnaire ask if they are single, yummy looking men between 30+36 please (photo must be provided)!
Figaro 19-03-2006, 03:56 PM I'd better say hello to you all then before you get annoyed and delete me. I'm quaking in my boots here.

Hey, that's not the intention - honestly.
Welcome to the site Figaro :)
Seabreeze 19-03-2006, 04:07 PM I'd better say hello to you all then before you get annoyed and delete me. I'm quaking in my boots here.
LOL you will fit in well here. Welcome. I had a cat called Figaro once....daughter named him after the cat in pinocchio.
Patsy 19-03-2006, 05:46 PM I'd better say hello to you all then before you get annoyed and delete me. I'm quaking in my boots here.
I think we've got a live one here, folks!
Bella 19-03-2006, 07:44 PM At last!! We have a newly registered member who actually posts! Better hold onto this one, it's new blood!! :w00t:
Coastie 19-03-2006, 07:47 PM Figaro...you have posted in the Apprentice thread and shown yourself to be someone who will not simply sign up and leave...therefore you have no risk of being bundled into the back of a van and taken to the bottomless pit and dumped into oblivion!
Instead...you qualify for your very own justfifiable welcome thread...:yahoo:
survivorfan 20-03-2006, 08:11 AM Ooo I would love to go in a delete all 'No posts Wonders' that have been inactive for a month...that'll teach 'em! :naughty: :
But at least they're not cluttering up the place with posts that nobody wants to read in the first place.
