View Full Version : The Olymipics. Are you paying for it?
maxine 16-03-2006, 06:34 AM I've just had my council tax bill and my understanding is that I'll be paying for the Olympics in 2012 for the next 10 years at £20 a year.
Who else here is paying for it? Do you object? Or do you think the whole country should pay?
It's not the money, as obviously £20 a year is not going to break the bank, but the principle. I didn't want the Olympics here so why should I pay for it. I wouldn't mind as much if I thought the whole country was contributing.
Bella 16-03-2006, 06:56 AM Max, I have absolutely no idea if we are paying extra or not. We haven't received our council tax bill yet.
I would have to say I am delighted that London won the bid at the expense of the French!
As you say £20, or £200 over 10 years is not going to break the bank and if I am honest I really don't mind despite the fact that Scotland is not going to benefit from the Olympics. London and the London area, and I think some of the other English cities are going to have new state of the art stadiums, some of their stadiums upgraded, that will still be used when the Olympics are finished.
My main concern is that is going to be a bit like the Millennium Dome and Scottish Parliament and the budget is going to spiral out of control and that £20 suddenly doubles, trebles and more.
tigger 16-03-2006, 08:06 AM I gotta pay too Max and I don't like it, considering that I have to pay some of the highest council tax as it is.:ranting:
Andrea 16-03-2006, 09:17 AM Wow, I didn't know you would have an extra item in your bill showing that you have paid for the olympics.
As far as I'm aware, we haven't got anything like that in our bill, although I haven't received it as yet.
I'm not sure it's fair just Londoner's paying for it.
I know London will benefit from all the extra people visiting, but surely the whole of Britian benefits with the extra income brought in to the government via this.
Although that does depend on how the government spend that extra money.
I don't think I'm paying for the Olympics - nor do I think we should - we'll see no benefit up here!
Northern angel 16-03-2006, 10:07 PM I don't know if we are paying for the Olympic games in 2012, we must be paying for our teams to participate in the present commonwealth games from the community charge or our other taxes. The money has to come from somewhere. Sponsorship for enterprise and industry is another area of fund raising for various sporting, yachting, and entertainment events.
I don't object to it, it's not going to break the bank.

tigger 17-03-2006, 12:25 PM Tell me, where do you live again Maureen?:glare:
If you paid the astronomically high council tax that we do in my Borough you might think again. :)
Groucho 17-03-2006, 02:24 PM It doesn't really bother me.
I'd rather see some of the other wasted payments from our taxes eliminated first.
tigger 17-03-2006, 03:22 PM That's only cos you live in that other town Groucho!:glare:
Coastie 17-03-2006, 05:38 PM Mines council tax has just gone up around £20 a month! I am not a happy bunny!
I am happy to pay a bit towards the Olympics but I'm sure we're being stung for the ruddy Millenium Tower they built over in Portsmouth now...and I did not want that in the first place!

£20 a month extra!!! mine is only £4, I'm a Band B house ... what band are you in? although I get a 25% discount for being the only adult in the house!
I would be annoyed if we had to pay for the olympics as it wont benefit me at all. I don't think we are being stung for the Spinnaker Tower Coastie ... we get a discount on the entrance fee you know!!!! :applause: :wink2: :w00t:
Coastie 17-03-2006, 05:58 PM I'm a band B and well...when my dad and lodger moved in my payments went up by a tenner a month...I thought okay fair nuff...anyway...they have since gone up another £20 a month and I don't know if it's because I am paying for three adults in the house from the start of the year where as last year it was only from September...or if they have really bumped it up as much as it looks! I know my payments have gone up by around £20 a month though and it's a darn shock...what with tha and my gas bill doubling in the last quater...for the first time I owe the gas supplier (and electric company for that matter) rather than being in credit! I don't want to put the heating on at all now because of the expense but I have to as I can't let the lodger get cold...:cold:
Groucho 17-03-2006, 07:45 PM I'm a Band B house ...
Have you got 2 nights available towards the end of May Dol, and a south facing room?:cool1:
Have I read that correctly?

Bonsai 18-03-2006, 10:59 AM Im not paying for the Olympics i dont think. It wasnt listed on the council tax bill which i got this morning.
Mine is going up by £5 a month, which i dont think is as bad as i expected.
I also got the new TV license bill too ...... so money wise it hasnt been a brilliant saturday !!
Got my council tax bill and I can't see that I am paying for it..although I appear to be paying for every other bloody thing...and mine has gone up by about £10 per month..
floopy 18-03-2006, 12:15 PM We're not paying for the Olympics and I'd be blummin annoyed if we were, and were still living in London.
I never wanted it, it'll cause horrendous congestion and disruption, the transport systems won't be able to cope, it doubtless won't be finished on time and it'll go massively over-budget. So no thanks, I'd rather not invest in the project if it's all the same. :glare:

Where is this perception that the transport and infrastructure won't cope?
Most of the transport relief in the East of London was planned even before the UK put Stratford forward.
The Eurostar/TGV's will be bring people direct from Europe into Stratford International Station
The Javlin trains will be taking thousands straight there in 7minutes from St Pancras and King's Cross which will accomodate all the people from the North of England as there's the Midland Main Line, East Coast Main Line, Thameslink etc (also collects Euston services)
People from Kent can get there in minutes on the high-speed express trains from Ebbsfleet International Station
There are all the trains coming out of Liverpool Street
There is the Central Line
There is the Jubilee Line
There is the Docklands Light Railway (which is being expanded as we speak)
There is the North London Line
There is the London City Airport (via DLR)
There will be special bus services
There will be masses of affordable hotel accomodation
There will be improved road access (although that won't be heavily encouraged).
Am I missing something? :wallbash:
Not only that but it will provide the country with several state of the art sports facilities (remember some of them will be dismantled after the circus) to enable our future athletes to train to win.
I say Bring It On........Rather the Olympics at £7b than a tent miles from anywhere at £750m
Bonsai 21-03-2006, 08:46 AM Not only that but it will provide the country with several state of the art sports facilities
Hmmmm, Wembly arena is coming on leaps and bounds isnt it. I wonder how the rest of the 'build' for the Olympics will go ?
BTW - i dont know if Wembly is part of the Olympics as i really dont care, i just think us Brits really know how to build fantastic arenas, quickly and on budget
Slipper 21-03-2006, 08:53 AM Consider this then.
The company who the FA employed to build Wembley was a company comprising of two men who had never built anything in the UK before. That was a smart move wasn't it?
However, Heathrow T5 is going well, Channel Tunnel Rail Link is going well. Two massive projects with little or no press. reason....they are going well
Re stadiums.....Arsenals Ashburton Grove ground didn't hit the press did it...it's coming in on time.
I can assure you that the IOC will not want a repeat of Athens/Wembley and so the company hired to manage the 2012 will be more than a two-man-band.

Agree with you about the public transport. I think there's a big risk of increased road congestion - with lanes being taken away from the public and reserved for Olympic VIPs.

Isn't the "tent" being used for one of the Olympic events? Nice to see it get some use at last :D

Multiplex obviously underbid the work, so from that point of view, the FA did very well out of them.
As for the original topic, well I doubt I live near enough to London to pay any extra tax, but I'm near enough for an easy ride in the watch the events. Double Whammy for me! :D If I can afford the tickets, that is...
Groucho 21-03-2006, 09:30 PM Channel Tunnel Rail Link is going well
Erm, it was years late, way over budget. The company that built it went bust and the company that now operates it is on the verge of bankruptcy.
And they've recently cut services to "increase the load factor".
All going well asside from that! :wink2:
Northern angel 22-03-2006, 02:23 AM I have just received my council tax bill. The bill is seperated into three areas
90% of it goes to the council, the remaining 10% is divided almost equally between the fire authority and the police force.
There is no mention of payments for the holding of the Olympics at all.
Is it possible that the Olympics costs will come from the European Rejuvenation fund plus a small percentage from the community charges within those areas close to London that would be affected by an increase in numbers for travel, lodgings, business etc?

The London Government website (www.london.gov.uk) has this to say about the funding:
Who will pay for the Games?
The Mayor of London and the government have agreed a package of £2.375 billion for the Games. Most of this – £1.5 billion – is coming from the National Lottery. Another £250 million will come from the London Development Agency. A further £625 million will come from increases in the London council tax, which will start in 2006 and be spread over 12 years.
The council tax increase will amount to around 38p per week, or £20 per year – and for every £1 Londoners pay, there will be £3 from the National Lottery

Cant see the French going for that somehow.
Aondeag 22-03-2006, 09:42 AM I could say they will be too busy celebrating their 6 nation victory...but I won't.
I'm keeping outta this one!
