I know there is already a pensions thread, but this is a personnal thing i hope some of you could have advice on.

I have just started a Scottish Equitable pension plan, whereby my company are paying into it, and im matching them. It isnt much - but it should give me a small sum when i retire.

But i have been searching through my paperwork and i also have a company pension with St. James Place. The company only paid into that, and i think its worth about £6,000 and the transfer fee is the same amount.

My question is, am i better keeping the two pensions separate .... or should i transfer the St. James Place pension to the current one ? I dont know what to do - i mean, should i put all my eggs into one basket ?

Finally, i was chatting with Mr.B and he said when he was 17 - 23 years old he had a company pension. The trouble is he cant remember the name of the pension company, and the old factory where he worked doesnt exist anymore. Is there somewhere we can go to find out what this pension is and its current worth / transfer value. Or is that impossible without the name of the pension company.

Now I'm worried about you two being poor in your old age ... you will be scrabbling about for money to put in the gas meter and only eating once a day!

When I've had company pension queries they've always had a pensions department, but I think you're company is probably too small. Ask the Pension Company they are usually very good at advice (in my experience with Standard Life anyway).

As for Mr B's pension ... doesnt' he receive yearly updates at all? Have you got no paperwork at all? tut tut (not much help I know ... sorry!). I'm anal about keeping paperwork from years ago when it comes to pensions, p60s, tax etc.

I too am good with paperwork. I have stuff going back years and years, but alas Mr.B left the company - then moved about 4 times and the paperwork didnt move with him. He left the company about 25 years ago, so he truly cant remember the name of the pension company.

Oh well - it was worth a shot that one of you might have some pearls of wisdom.
