Someone explain this to me because I'm quite ignorant when it comes to things like the budget, politics etc.
But the way I understand it is that it is nearing the end of the financial year and the budget on roadworks has to be used up before then in order to have it increased next year - is that right?
If so, is this why there are so many roadworks going on just now? I'm not sure what it's like anywhere else but my town and, in fact, the whole of central Scotland in general, seems to be just a mass of roadworks.
If what I have said above is correct, does this mean that there may be unnecessary roadworks going on just so that the budget is used up in time to get more money for it next year? And if so, what are your views on this?
It's so frustrating - took me about half an hour today just to get out of my town alone. :ranting:

Actually there are loads of roads closed up here at the moment - so I know what you mean.

We were down in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago - and there there was about five sets of roadworks on the way!

Hello Rob and PJ,

I think the politics of the situation is that whoever is in Government elects Scotland as it testing ground, at the moment they are testing your patience and your great reserve for tolerance. Don't worry the North East of England has in previous decades also become a human laboratory, what with blocking off roads or creating temporary traffic lights whilst closing smaller roads off.

We could do with some polish workers to finish the buggers off, because hayhem always seems to rule the day especially so on the motorway, or dualcarriage way which appear to have yellow cones on them stretching for 100's or ,1000's of yards, sometimes even a mile or so, and nobody working on them, no work in progress absolutely nothing. Zilch the cabins are no where in sight, no works vehicles in sight nor is there a forgotten tea cup at the roadside, for that great species of the lesser spotted British road worker. Maybe they've gone on a protest rally about working conditions or something. Maybe its been raining. Who knows?

Do you think it is possible that it is a stunt pulled for the benefit of a reality based TV programme, that the martians have indeed landed.

Sorry Choir practice has me a little light headed, especially since I have also had a wee drink for medicinal purposes.

Ive noticed a lot of roadworks where i live. There is one long country road that i travel down twice a day - and they have 4 sets of temporary traffic lights set up down there as they are doing something strange to the sides of the road.

There was a road drill outside my house all night last night.

Fortunately it was switched off.

My road's been closed this week. The council have been using up their tree surgery money. The continual sound of the power saws and grinders has been sweetened by a huge pile of logs, my impending off-road parking, daylight coming in through the windows - and pecs on parade:fireman:

Dunno the answer Peej, but maybe be cos it's too cold in December/January and the work would be too slow/dangerous due to snow/ice etc . Also the daylight hours are less in Nov/Dec/Jan.

Works also have to be finished by the summer hols cos of the tourist traffic, so I'm guessing this is the best time of year to get it done.

Interesting. I hadn't even thought about these issues.

But do you think they're still doing stuff which is unneccessary just to get a bigger budget next time? I mean, they installed a pavement on one side of the road on a street close to mine that didn't even need it since the side in question is right next to some railings that are next to a railway line so no-one ever walks on that side anyway. It just seemed like a complete waste.
