Do you have a place where have lived that may be a potential holiday/travel destination.

If so what can you offer by way off an inside track.

Eg. I lived in Hong Kong for a while. There are many things that I would do with visitors that were either not in the book or were glossed over for more touristy type things

My tips for Hong Kong. (mostly Island as I became an Island snob and hardly went to Kowloon side)

Get on the trams...dont go for the tourist ones...just get on as they all have to follow each other so all you are paying 200x the price for is space but you're missing the fun of it.

Go to the aviary...the most peaceful and relaxing hour or so you can spend in the middle of all that hustle and bustle. (my fave spot to suprise people. A college went for 4 days and I suggested this...he and his wife went twice)

Happy Valley night races...A MUST do..cacophony of noise, bright lights, stunning surroundings....go by foot and get down on the pavement..it's cheap and unlike any other evening entertainment (warning...their betting is slightly different from here)

Eat Hawker Food...cheap, fresh, fast. I generally eat either hawker or noodle bar food during the week. Can't honestly say it had any effect. sure there may have been one or two upsets but I can say there were definate occasions with the western food I had.

Get to the food markets...Wanchai on a hot afternoon is an experience you will not forget. not for the squeamish but really must be done.

Go to the Islands in the North East...great food, great people, travel through the National Park in Saikung. A full day out so not for those on a stop-over

From a locals perspective - avoid Bedford for your holidays - there is nothing of interest here at all. (apart from me and cat of course)

Well if you visit Portsmouth you will have to go to the historic dock yard and see HMS Victory and HMS Warrior...don't bother with the Mary Rose it's just a huge piece of soggy wood!

Hop on the ferry and you can swan across to Gosport and the Submarine Museum which is actually quite interestinga nd you get to go abord a real submarine called HMS Alliance! The Explosion Ordnance museum is facing huge financial difficulties but if you like things that go off with a bang it will fullfill your every need!

Fort Brockhust was bulit as part of Palmerstons follies...he heard that the French had buily the first iron clad ship and thought they were coming after us so he built a line of forts to protect the Solent from a seaward attack. They were never used for the purpose they were built but an interesting part of local history.

Back to Portsmouth and you may want to pop into either the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the C or E one...yes it is one of only two cities (I believe) that has one of each and they are pretty impressive...if you like that kind of thing!

There is also a Royal Marines museum and Sea Life centre down towards Southsea but I'd avoid the fun fair as it's a bit pants!

i'll concur with slipper hawker food it tasty!! especially fishballs!! sound minging but they dont really taste like fish. would also suggest dai pai dongs, which are outdoor hawker style restaurants, really cheap and really tasty! a real taste of chinese food.

But one massive tip for hong kong is to NEVER EVER visit stanley market, waaaay overpriced, instead go to ladies market in mong kok (kowloon which from the sounds of it slipper hated!!) still quite touristy but cheaper than stanley market, sells the same stuff. locals dont tend to go to ladies market but the one on the next street (fa yuen market), even cheaper and sells the same stuff!! but all this wont make sense unless you are going there.

although i never lived there i have been on numerous occasions and my relatives and that show me around so i get all the insider tips.
