View Full Version : Are you security consious ?
Bonsai 27-03-2006, 11:35 AM I was reading MS's thread about the murder near her, and she mentioned how on occasion she had left a door unlocked in her home.
I never lock my back door !! I used to when i lived in Essex as break ins were common, but i feel so safe where i live now that i dont bother. Its pathetic i know, and im also aware i would struggle to make an insurance claim if we were broken into ... but i just dont lock the door
Am i alone in this ?
I remember when my grandparents were alive that they never locked doors. We always used the side door and not the front door - but we could just walk in if they were out, no hassle at all.
Times have changed i know - but i like to think i live in a community where we all look out for one another.
Groucho 27-03-2006, 02:35 PM Are there any prisons near you? :ninja:
Tigereye 27-03-2006, 03:31 PM I'm an awful divil for not locking doors - but I think my barking mad mutt jordan would be enough of a deterrant.....
Bonsai 27-03-2006, 03:55 PM Are there any prisons near you? :ninja:
Yes there are .... but why should that bother me ?
I beleive there is a mental institution near you.
Groucho 27-03-2006, 04:09 PM That's why I have level RED security on 24 hours a day!
Coastie 27-03-2006, 07:27 PM I always lock up...when I go away I put the window locks on to! Don't want the insurance people wriggling out of a payment if I get done over! :evilmad:
I always lock my doors when I go out - but I live in the centre of town.
Dolores 27-03-2006, 07:33 PM I always have the intention of locking my doors, but sometimes I forget! Only last week I went to bed and left the front door unlocked all night ... usually I'm so careful about locking up. One day I even went to work and left the back door wide open ALL DAY, luckily any would be burglars probably thought no-one is so stupid to leave a door open all day if they're not in!!
Having said that I've been burgled once (during the day) and had bikes stolen from my back garden (which is surrounded by a six foot wall) twice!
Andrea 27-03-2006, 07:58 PM I always lock the doors, even though it's pretty quiet round here.
The main trouble around here is lads messing about.
A neighbour just up the road got her front window smashed the other week. Apparently the police know who did it, but can't do anything about it.:wallbash:
Actually the last few days, I've gone to go out in the car, unlocked the car, or so I thought, but I'd locked the car instead. So I'd left the car open all night!
Coastie 27-03-2006, 08:11 PM Mama Coastie left her car unlocked one night and the beggars darn went and nicked all her CD's! :ranting: One night was all it took...:glare:
The neighbours of Mama Coastie have been burgled on either side, next door but one and over the back because they left their bathroom windows open ONCE!
Brother Coastie left the front door ajar on at least two occasions when he came home with friends a little tiddled (while still at home) and we never got burgled...Mama Coastie did her nut on each occasion...then we went off on our hols one time and left the front door wide open...fortunately the neighbour spotted it and shut it for us
Northern angel 27-03-2006, 09:43 PM I am very security minded. I live in close proximity to a city and also close to an estate with a name for itself. Having said that I have occassionally gone out and forgotten to use my key to lock the front door. On return nothing has been amiss and I've wandered how I managed to forget to lock up. At night I do leave lights on, I know this is not economical or environmentally friendly, but if you leave a light on would be burglars would hopefully be deterred.
I once rented out a holiday cottage in Wales for a month whilst on a singing spree, and there were no locks on the doors or windows. Nothing went missing and I felt extremely secure.

I try, I really try,
Actually the last few days, I've gone to go out in the car, unlocked the car, or so I thought, but I'd locked the car instead. So I'd left the car open all night!
but this is my forte too. I always think I have done it and usually it's open all night, so then I get up with sinking feeling and hope to get to it before mr b finds its been open all night and proceeds to make my ears bleed with his lectures on locking the damn car!
I am pretty good about locking the house up though. Although I did trundle off to the shops on saturday and cpme home to find the back door wide open..:bag:
Bonsai 28-03-2006, 08:50 AM One thing im prone too (but lucky its when im in the house) is leaving my keys in the front door.
I often arrive home laden with food shopping - uplock / open the front door, walk in with the bags, shut the door and then proceed with putting the shopping away. Mr.B gets home hours later waggling my keys in my face telling me i should be more careful. I do it after walking the dog too. Im so busy pulling off my muddy wellies that i forget about the key in the lock.
I have left it in the door all night before now. You know, burglers wouldnt need to break into my house - just turn the key and walk straight in
Aondeag 28-03-2006, 09:40 AM I never lock the door when I am in the house.I just never think of it.
I often leave the patio doors wide open too., and then nip across for a cuppa to my neighbour etc. I'll try and be more security conscious from now on.
eek.
MariaRob 28-03-2006, 10:31 AM My ex next door neighbour was burgled because she hadnt put the mortise on and they got past the Yale with a credit card. Then another friend's wife locked the mortise, they think someone saw her do it, gathered from that that they were going to be out for some time, and they got burgled. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Someone I know went on a three week holiday and accidently left the french windows wide open. Nothing was stolen everything ok apart from leaves in the lounge. Same with someone else who left the slidy door of a vw camper wide open all night out on the street. All intact. I think perhaps any potential burglars might think it's a trap or something and not risk any thievery just in case theres a camera or they are being watched.:sly:

msgirl 29-03-2006, 02:13 AM I'm usually very compulsive with my door locking and car door checking and such, but hubby will stay up later than me on his nights off (Mon-Thurs), and unless I check them before I turn in, he's apt to leave them unlocked, especially if he nips out for a smoke. We have left keys in the vehicles before, to my horror. FIL has closed the front door a time or two when msboy #2 rode the school bus and didn't pull it to hard enough and I guess the wind blew it open. I usually lock my car doors as soon as I get in the vehicle, at home or in town. We have some reprobates running around here, but we just haven't got 'hit' yet.
