View Full Version : Car Tax
Patsy 30-03-2006, 04:54 PM I got my car tax reminder through the post last week. It said that you could apply on-line. I thought, yeah right, how long will this take?
Well, I did it on Monday night. It took 2 minutes to complete the on-line form and my disc arrived today (Thursday). I was so impressed, I thought I would share this little gem of info with you.
If you're anything like me and always end up in the post office on pension day, I'm sure you'll find it useful.
:)
Fee For All 30-03-2006, 04:59 PM Thanks for the reminder Patsy. Post Office for me tomorrow. Usual scramble to find insurance cert first...
Will try it online next time!
Patsy 30-03-2006, 05:01 PM You're welcome. My advice would be go late afternoon. They'll be having their nap then.
Fee For All 30-03-2006, 05:06 PM Patsy, I live in Worthing (home of the beige Mini Metro).
They work it in shifts here :ranting:
Patsy 30-03-2006, 05:07 PM Ahhhh. You're dunfer. Take a thermos.
Fee For All 30-03-2006, 05:09 PM Might as well - they all do. And some nice scones.
A whole new social scene beckons.

Excuse me, but most of us pensioners have our money paid into our bank accounts these days (whose touchy about being a pensioner then :whistling: )it's just that whatever day you go to the Post Office it is always heaving, especially at the end of the month when everyone's in there doing their car tax (which seems to take forever).
We got one of those online application notices in our DVLA reminder too (only it was for a car that we'd just sold) so I will deffo be doing mine online next time.
Fee For All 30-03-2006, 05:12 PM ...backs slowly out of the thread.
:bye: Hi Crit! You beat me to it; I was just about to pull Patsy up for her comments.
Patsy 30-03-2006, 05:15 PM Crit, I don't think of you as a pensioner, you sensitive soul you. :wink_kiss
In Petts Wood, it seems this concept has not been adopted. It's mayhem on a Thursday.
Slightly OT, but why do old people find it necessary to do their shopping at lunchtime when everyone's trying to get a sandwich? They've got all bleedin' day!!!! :glare:
As you were.
Edit: Fee get that :pooh: off your nose.

Ooooh you big fibber :shocking:

To continue the off-topicness - why do they do their shopping on a Saturday and Sunday? They've got all bleedin' week!
Seabreeze 30-03-2006, 05:23 PM The thing is, most pensioners get their money paid into a post office account and still insist on getting in all out on their usual day. They don`t like change. Not including you Crit just the much older pensioners.
Fee For All 30-03-2006, 05:28 PM Useful site here (http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/information/tables.asp#petrol) for working out how much your car will cost you in new road tax.
Beige Metros owners should have to pay double. Triple if the car is used in rush hour.
Minklemar 30-03-2006, 05:28 PM I renewed mine online this year and was impressed by how easy it was and how quickly it came though too.
I have a Smart so mr road tax was only £75 a year......since the budget it's gone down to £40 per year!! :D (do you think I can get a refund - I only renewed it in February)

Look, we've got to get our kicks any way we can. You know all that fumbling in the purse and putting the shopping away as slowly as we can, dropping our money on the floor, chatting to the salesgirl? It's all put on  Once we've shuffled slowly out of the shop we straighten up and march smartly to our car, fling the shopping in with gay abandon and drive off chuckling to ourselves. We then compare notes with our friends about who managed to get the queue back the furthest :naughty:
Fee For All 30-03-2006, 05:31 PM I think you can get a refund - it was mentioned on the radio.
What Smart do you have? I'm thinking about the roadster coupé, but my car has actually gone up in value so I may take the garage's advice and hang on to it for another year.
Edit to add:My tax rate has been reduced because of the Budget. Can I apply for a new disc at the reduced rate and then claim a refund on my current disc. How long will it take?
Yes. There is nothing to stop you applying for a refund on your current disc and relicensing at the new reduced rate from March 23rd. You can get a refund for each full calendar month still to run on the licence disc at the time you apply. If you require a refund on your current disc please use application form V14. V14’s are available for download from the forms page or from any Post Office® branch that issue tax discs and DVLA Local Offices. Your refund should be sent to you within 3 – 6 weeks (http://www.dvla.gov.uk)
Thermos optional.

Oh, I'll have to look into it..... rather in my pocket than theirs!
I have a Smart fourtwo - it's red and silver and I LOVE it, best car I've had. I was looking at the Roadsters the other day when mine was in for a service....very nice :)
Fee For All 30-03-2006, 05:40 PM Just added the link, Mink. :pimp:
Have you seen this site (http://www.smartsrus.com/smart_car_photos.htm)? I was thinking about buying one in Boring Grey as they are cheaper on the second hand market, and then getting it jazzed up.
The on;y problem with getting your car tax online is that you have to have a computerised MOT certificate - I found I didn't when I tried to get my tax disc - on the day it was due!
Bonsai 30-03-2006, 06:32 PM My boss did his online and was hugely impressed. Its a great idea. You can also do it over the phone.
I had to renew mine at the end of feb, but i had to wait until the last day of February to get it as i had to wait to get paid. So i queued for nearly all of my lunch hour to get one, which was most annoying.
I think i will be paying a massive car tax next time as i have a gas guzzler of a 4x4. I would love to get rid of it, but we bought it so i could fit all the animals in to ship them to my mums should we go on holiday. I have to fit in the tortoise with thank, bunny and cage, birds and cage, 2 x cat boxes and the dog. I needed a big car.
We also wanted it to pull the caravan (yep, im a caravan owner)
I was beyond excitement when I managed to do my boss's car tax online - it is about the first thing I have managed to do right when it comes to that blinkin car ... it is so easy, quick and the disc arrived two days later - WELL IMPRESSED.
And when you live about 18 miles from the nearest post office that actually does car insurance it is such a money/time saver.
Andrea 30-03-2006, 08:14 PM I've just got our tax today for the rover, but had to get it from the post office.
I was going to do it online but of course, me being me, left it too late.
Apparently if you get your tax online, you have to make sure you have the car tax disc on your car, the day it is due.
You can be fined for having an out of date disc displayed, even if you've paid online and are waiting for it in the post.
Our tax for the rover is due at the end of March, and I always say to myself, I must get it before the budget, and invariably I forget, have to then get it after the budget and alway end up paying more.

I print out the page after completing the online transaction and put it on my windscreen...

I'll save the Smart page and have a good look through later - they are lovely aren't they? :D

I love smart cars, especially the sports car type one.
I would love to own one, but alas i cant. Maybe in a few years.

I think putting up the tax on cars like yours was a mistake. It's only twenty quid a year so it's hardly likely to act as a deterrent. In fact if the point is to reduce the use of gas guzzlers he should have increased the duty on petrol and diesel for private cars and lorries - instead it's remained unchanged since April 2003 (although the duty on diesel for passenger and freight trains has gone up by over 50% in the same period)

Yeah i kinda agree. I do think £20 extra isnt a deterant, but i think one of the reasons he did it was to put people off buying new 4x4's, especially in places like London. They do take up more room than an average car, and maybe if everyone drove Mini's it would aid congestion.
But in the country you dont have that problem, and often its a blessing to have a 4x4 when there is snow etc ... Gritters dont often come to us. Last winter i remember driving to work and seeing about 4 cars spinning all over the road in front of me. It scared me to death but i stuck to the road. Its fab, and it means i will always get to work.
