Last Wednesday My daughter and her finace set off to the train station in Cardiff to catch the 10.15 train to Portsmouth. There had been a crash in the Servern tunnel which delayed their journey by 2 hours. They eventaully arrived in Portsmouth at 3.30pm where they had tickets to the sea-life center. At 6pm that evening they made their way to the ferry terminal for their short mini cruise, Portsmouth to Bilbao, which a 4 hours excursion on shore then back again.
When they arrived at the terminal they were told the ferry was delayed due to adverse weather conditions in the Bay of Biscay. After a 6 hours wait they boarded their boat and set said at 3am the following morning - they should have departed 9.30pm the night before. The sea was very rough with force 8 gales which meant they were both sea sick even after taking tablets to combat it.
Arriving in Spain they were then told that instead of the 4 hours on land they had only hour and half. Arriving back to the boat after their hour and half walk about in Sapin the boat was delayed a further 2 hours due engineering difficulty.
Eventually back on the high seas my daughter then discovered her purse was missing. After many phone calls for the cancelling of her credit cards it suddenly dawned on her that she had not used her purse once whilst they had been away and could she have been that stupid and just forgotten to bring it !!!
Instead of arriving back in Portsmouth at 6pm they were told the time would be near 11pm. That meant that the last train to Cardiff had gone and they would be stuck at the terminal till the following morning. My husband then arranged a B+B for them close by.
Arriving back on dry land and starving hungry they made their way to B+B but alas could not find any place to eat that was open.
I have just spoken to them now and they are on the train back home BUT it has broken down and they are awaiting a replacment !! Her last words to me were MUMMY please make it all stop.
This is their first holiday together by themselves. Things can only improve for them (fingers crossed). It will be another few hours before we know about the purse.

Oh lord, SB, that sounds awful. It never rains but it pours, eh? Hope they get back safely.

What a shame - Bilbao is such a lovely place.

On the upside, if they've survived all that without blaming each other, it looks like they've got a good relationship there:thumbsup:

OMG SB, that's enough to give anyone "Travelphobia". Those poor young things. They'll be glad to get home for big welcoming hugs and hot tea and sympathy.

I hope the crash in the tunnel wasn't too bad. I hate that wretched tunnel when I go to Wales to visit my rellies. Makes my ears hurt and it seems to go on and on. There was a crash in there a couple of years ago too. What an awful place to get stuck.

Hope they'll be back safe and sound soon and I hope Miss SB finds her purse too.

Edited out the bit about the crash - just realised it was last week.

The crash was last Wednesday and only involved one train that hit something sticking out and damaged a fuel line but caused delays of up to 4 hours.

oh dear oh lord!

I totally sympathise, especially regarding the purse! I can imagine what a blind panic she must have been in when she thought it was missing. If I was her I wouldn't be able to relax until I got home and knew one way or the other whether it had gone missing.

As for the sea journey, oh dear oh dear! I'm not a very good sea traveller at the best of times, that journey would have just about finished me off  .

They will look back and laugh about this later, but I should imagine at the moment (or at least when they phoned you) all the wanted was their own bed and to be on terracotta (I know it's terrafirma, I just borrowed terracotta from Del Boy cos it always makes me laff!).

Let us know about the purse SB ... I'm starting to get anxious myself!

Aww, SB was a nightmare! At least her purse wasn't stolen but now she will have to wait until all her new cards arrive!

They must be absolutely shattered! They will need another holiday to recover from that one!
