So that two teams of toffs can race against each other, and other toffs can watch from the side of the river quaffing champers and eating cavier, thinking they are ever so upmarket!

It's jolly well not the same since ITV took over. *shudders under her cashmere*

I know it's pointless but it's just one of those traditions that have endured.

It's all got very technical these days hasn't it? Microphones in the ears, and hi-tech looking oars.

I confess to having a bit of a soft spot for it really because I lived in Hammersmith as a kid and going to stand on Hammersmith Bridge to watch it was a highlight in those days. The cox used to have to shout through a loud hailer thingy then.

My cousin, Robin, was always Oxford and I was always Cambridge and I remember my cousin (probably about 6 or 7) crying all the way home when Oxford lost :)

Mum usually managed to afford us a bit of blue ribbon on a pin but I really wanted a proper rosette or the crossed oars brooch but they were too dear.

Happy memories :bag:

I`m not really sure what the point of it all is really except that it`s become a tradition. I for one watch it every year, not for the love of rowing but just because at times it can be quite exciting to watch. It`s like I don`t follow horse racing but will always watch The Grand National, it`s just one of those things that if you don`t watch everyone else will talk about and you won`t be able to join in
The Grand National is on next weekend I think.

I fell into a wine induced sleep - it was lovely. Oh and congrats to Oxford.

Good God - it's sponsored.

And cheerleaders. I have a horrible feeling there were colonials participating too.
*Joins Maxine under the cashmere*

Is it finished then:unsure:

Nobody drowned then ? darn it !

Mind you them Hoorays are so full of air, drowning would prove a problem.

Yes, the Grand National is on next weekend.
I only learnt a few years ago that this is always the week after the boat race.
Then comes the london marathon.

...And Her Maj (Gaw'bless yer m'um) is 80 on the 21st.

Doesn't that merit an extra holiday? It's about the only useful thing the Royal Family do for us really, provide excuses for jollies.

I wonder if they will do anything special to celebrate?

I quite enjoy the boat race...nice fit young men sweating it out in rowing suits...what's not to like ladies...however I have to confess to willing more water into the Cambridge boat today just to see a sinking! I don't have a fave team I just have a saddistic streak! :naughty:
