Greetings to you all! Yes it's me..Coastie alive and well in DC!

So far I have covered NY in a day and a half...my feet are throbbing...and have travelled by Greyhound today to DC and shown my mate the sights Igot to know very well 10yrs ago...my feet are still throbbing!

Anyway...we pick up aHonda Accord tomorrow and head west to San Fransico via route 50 (I'm Sure Fee or someone will beable to provide a mini map displaying this road which is also known as the Lonliest Road). We shall be seeing sights like the Lonliest Phone and the biggest base ball bat...horrah...as we travel down this road. I shall endeavour to keep you posted of our progress whereever possible...apparently many of the truck stops have free showers so I am looking forward to sharing a shower with a big hairy trucker but would like to avoid any re-enactments of DUEL!

MissG...I haven't forgotten about you and we hope to get a car in Frisco that needs to be delivered to Miami...we should have 10 days to get from DC to Frisco so hopefully anytime after that we could be heading your way!

Anyway must dash...only 15mins allowed since this is free internet access at the Hilltop Hostel in Takoma DC!

TTFN!

Hey Coastie, are you gonna get one of these t-shirts:w00t:

Coastie
07-05-2006, 08:01 PM
Fee: your sign of the route 50 is for 50 East we are heading West and yes we will be looking to buy one of those t-shirts because we can!

Howdy Y'all

Well we have mosied into Dodge City and finally, after some 1,500+ miles along Route 50 (with a slight diversion to Route 56) discovered a place with internet access...phew...its the public library in Dodge by the way...incase you ever need to know!

Well what can I say...so far, since departing D.C. we have travelled through Virginia (passing close by my old work palce for two summers in 95+96), West Virginia, Maryland and back into Virginia, onto Ohio, Indiana, Illinois (probably just listed those in teh wrong order), through Missouri and are on the flip side of Kansas...we forgot to shange our watches when we past through a time zone on the border of Illinois and Indiana and so have spent the last two days one hour ahead of time...going to bed at 8 and rising at 6!

We spent our first night in the car beside a remote bridge and stream...very creepy...in Maryland...the next night was under canvas in Illinois and the next under canvas again in Missouri...we liked Missouri...anyway we are now in Kansas and spent last night by a huge lake with a bunch of noisey youths...:yahoo:

We are now looking to visit an old boss who emigrated to Colorado a few years back...he doesn't know we're coming and we have no way of warning him so we just hope he is there.

So far I have had one tick (located and disposed off before he dug in) and have had a pee at the top of Pawnee Rock! Other highlights include just the general joy of the open road, avoiding Country music channels on the 4radio and counting roadkill possums...although we have kinda lost count of those now...we were promised white squirrells in one small town we past through but they must have heard us coming and hid... We look ahead to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and the state parks of Utah where the real adventure begins...by the way we are sooo on the bible belt...there are more churches than houses in half the towns we pass through and well Missouri is definately the best state thus far!

We still haven't been pulled over by the police and have yet to hold up a liquor store or pick up Brad Pitt...ho well...maybe we can do that on the return trip which looks like it could be from L.A. to Chicargo (sorry MissG we may not get to you after all due to the car situation and all  )

We have 5 more days or so to deliver the car so are planning to spend some quality time in Utah and Colorado!

Who knows when you will here from me again but until you do...Have a nice day no ya here!

Oh Fee...we had those to in Utah! :nerd:

Anyway...Hi folks...just had the most amazing couple of days driving through Colorado...wow...wow...wow...it is just one incredible sight after another after another and a few mhundred more besides...we went to visit an old boss of mine in Vail...he didn't know we were coming and we only had an address and the word that he was last know to be working in an Irish bar but we still tracked him down and oh my goodness the look on his face was priceless...anyway he and his missus put us up for the night and it was great to catch up.

Yesterday we left the pure excellence of Colorado behind via the Colorado Monument (think mini Grand Canyon...amazing) and headed into Utah...we spent the night at a state park called Green River...it wasn't the best but neither was it the worst...Today we spent crossing Utah and are now around 50 miles or so over the border in Nevada...so far we have resisted the endless line of slot machines in every motel and I think it's safe to say our resistance will hold as we seek out the Lonliest Phone on this stretch of the 50 and we will be passing by Fallon Air Force Base (Top Gun) so will be looking to pick up a couple of Naval Aviators...if anyone else wants one let me know now..........to late...their all mine!

Anyway we have a couple more days before we have to drop the car off in Monterey, California and are still not sure what route we will be heading back East via...it all depends on the driveaway we can get!

No problem...

We are in California having spent a wonderful drive through Nevada...wow...it has to be said America saved the best till last on Route 50 for us...Colorado, Utah, Nevada...my word what beautiful and aweinspiring places they are! Words can not describe the scenery!

Anyway...MissG...we have been unable to get a car from California to Florida so saddly I will have to say the chance of a meet is now in ruins  Instead the only car we could get going anywhere East for a reasonable distance is one from L.A. to Milwakee so we have taken it and decided we shall get our kicks on 66!

The route takes us right by the Grand Canyon where we are looking to go for a helicopter flight...it's very cheap considering so why the hell not (60 quid).

I have purchased my 'I survived the lonliest road' T-shirt (in grey and black and a bit of red...very nice) and have my mock passport for the road now...yay...it's just a shame that because we did the route in reverse we copuldn't get it stamped enroute! :( Ho well...it was free along with two tie pins!)

It is absolutely gutting that we can't get to Mississippi as we were both looking forward to it but our spirits have been lifted by the chance to ride the legendary route...I shall endeavour to keep you all posted on our progress back east!

I am in Monterey...we delivered the car at 4pm today and are in a rather plush hostel...it is like no hostle either of us have ever seen in our lives...and we have each seen a fair few...it is basically the ruddy Ritz...it's luxurious and only $22 a night! Neither of us can believe it!

Anyway we spent last night is the cool...okay cold...Californian Mountains...snow still visual...brrr...but we had to creep and grovel to the camp site hopsts as they weren't due to open til today...they were such a sweet old couple and let us sneak in a day early bless 'em...anyway...no more ticks (I think our last few sites have been too cold for them) but plenty of beautiful birds and interesting small rodents to watch while we cook our pork and beans over the camp fire and sing songs...'I Believe in a =Thing Called Love' by the Darkness has become a bit of an anthem as a result of a hilarious moment which cannot be translated into words so I wont bother rtying...anyway we saw a tree covered in shoes and some very yummy men filming it the other day (mmm mmmmmm) and I screamed shoe tree as my driver Di nearly sped past it...that has also become an in joke...

Anyway Monterey is lovely and we head for San Fran tommorrow and then to L.A. for our next car....

Hello Coastie,

A marvelous read. Your adventures will hopefully never be forgotten. Stay safe and when you and yours return - I hope you are both well.

It's a pity you couldn't have met up with msgirl. The offer was very tempting home comforts V tent stops, car sleeping and uncertain and suspect accommodation stops. Still you sound very much alive and well.

24-05-2006, 02:15 PM
Hello all...this is the first internet access we have found since I last updated y'all...it's been a lonley time without cha!

So what have I been up to..well...we had an amazing time in San Fransico...in a day...we visited Alcatraz (and they let us out...fools) and we found the bumpy road they use in all the movies along with the windiest road (that was up the top of a humungeous hill...my poor little legs)...I amused an old chinese guy while having a morning brew outside a cafe...he walked past once and smiled so I smiled back and then he kept walking past and smiling at me and chuckling...

Anyway we then sped down to L.A. on the night Grey Hound bus...you get to see some interesting people on these journeys...hmmm yes very interesting...then we picked up our next car...a Honda Civic which would take us to Milwakee. We decided...naturally...to take Route 66 where ever possible althoutgh this proved to be a little tricky at times due to parts of it being ineccessible now and other parts being to far off track for our mileage allowance and well we were saving a few miles to go and see....the Grand Canyon Baby!...wooooah yeah...it's very big! Very, very big! We spent a night up there in our little two man tent and then it was off across America seeing little more than cows, knob shpaed corn/grain silos (they really do look like giant willies) and farm machinery...hmmm...oh forgot to mention we also spent a night camped out in the Mojave Desert before the Grand Canyon...our camp site options fell sharply from the Grand Canyon onwards as we spent one night in a rough RV park behind a gas station...another in a another RV park beside a rail way line...cool orange trains though...then we descovered a few state parks on our route again but they were all a bit naff and we had to go without showers for three days...:shocking:

Anyway we arrived in Miulwakee on Monday as planed...dropped the car off at a hotel as requested...the owner didn't even check the car as she was in Class and had left the front office with instructions to accept the keys to the vehicle...we had done around 300 miles over the alloted amount and had been ready to pay but no-one checked so we didn't have to...cool! Anyway we then had to track across what is a very dull city to the driveaway office where we arranged for our deposit to be returned and learned of a car that needed delivery from Detriot to Conneticut...

Coastie
24-05-2006, 02:22 PM
Cool...we arranged to jump on a Greyhound that day and head for Chicago...we did Chicago in 5hrs (the Sears Tower, Grand Union Station (where they shot the finale of the Untouchables) and Pizza)) then got the night bus to Detriot arriving at 0700! From here after a few problems locating the local bus terminal we got to the Detroit office of Auto-Driveaway and picked up a shiney silver Pontiac Grand Prix...hoooooo mama...iot corners like it's on rails and goes like poo off a shovel! The guiy in the offica asked us if we were going via Canada...

We hadn't thought this an option as normally you are not allowed to drive the cars out of the country but he said there was no problem and that it was actually the shortest route to Conneticut where we have to deliver the car...naturally we said TO RUDDY RIGHT WE'RE GONNA GO THROUGH CANADA! So last night we stayed in our first Motel in London...Ontario...and today we are heading for Niagra Falls as my mate hasn't seen it yet...we have until Saturday to drive a mere 700 miles (we would noramlly have to cover that in two days) so we plan on making the most of it!

Anyway...sorry I have been unable to keep you posted as often as I would have liked but I hope these two have made up for it...and MissG soz again we couldn't make it down your way...we were both gutted :(

Coastie
27-05-2006, 07:34 PM
Peej...I tried to get to San Diego (since that is also the name of my road at home) but saddly we didn't make it...we were distracted by the call of the Canyon...sorry!

MissG...we have become slightly hooke don this Driveaway thing so there is a chance we may make it to you next year..eeek!

I didn't see any Mounties although I did see a very nice police man on a mountain bike...

Well we are now in Conneticut having delivered our Pontiac...ooo how flash are we...we had to drop it off in the arm pit of nowhere which led to our first major rebellion of the trip...we hitched a ride back to our digs...naughty...and the driver was a nutter...even though he had his wife and baby son in the car...he admitted to not having a license and was drinking booze at the wheel...we didn't notice this until we were in the car...eek

Anyway I have to go in a mo so I shall just say we have one night here then three in Long Beach its memorial day weekend so it's all a bit mad...anyhow I'll be back to terrorise England again on Thursday...and I'm back at work a few days after that...I still don't have my diary so I can't say exactly when!

Hugs to y'all!

Ooo...I made it back on line....I am in Long Island (River Head) - we have been camping in Wild Wood State Park and arrived there on Sunday...by the way there is no bus service on Long Island on a Sunday (or on Bank Holidays like yesterday Memorial Day) so we had to do that whole hitching thing again...we got picked up by an old man in a big white Lincoln who was on his way homke from church. He asked us if we had religion and since I do we had a bit of a discussion about stuff...he was a bit heavy for me but bless him all the same...he saved us $50 on a cab fare and we even have his card to send him a postcard from home...wont be sending our addresses though...oooo no! Anyway...we are in the state park...on our arrival Sunday we were surrounded by New Yo'i'kers on their Memorial Day Vacation weekend...it was a good job we booked ahead as we wouldn't have got a spot to pitch our little tent! Anyway, yesterday a whole load of them left and this morning when we woke up we found ourselves to be pretty much the only people in the whole of the state park! There are alot of caterpillers making their was down from the trees on silk and so everything is covered in caterpilla poop and caterpilla's - obviously!

It's a little cramped in our two man tent now as we don't have a car for our bags anymore so it's all in with us...we have to sleep curled up and my knees don't like that!

We will be spending one more night on the site (I went swimming off Long Island Sound yesterday to) then tomorrow we head back into the big city. From there I shall be off to Newark Airport and home and my travel buddy will be off on a five day coach journey across Canada to the Yukon! She is slightly bonkers!

Ho-well...all fantastic adventures must come to an end and so this one will be...:( I have no idea when I am due back at work still as I haven't got my diary but when I am I shall give you more insight as to the ups and downs of travelling across the U.S. and back and then some!

Had a fabby time...for those who may be interested in the future...the company who do the cars we were using can be contacted via autodriveaway.com - basically you look on the internet...see what cars need delivering where and let them know you are available to do it! The record was set by a couple of Brits who travelled 26,000 miles in three months of travelling with this company providing their transport!

It's fab...a free car for 'x' number of days and 'x' number of miles (although if you go over you pay 0.25c a mile and even then no-one ever checked our mileage anyway so even though we went massively over on one we never had to pay....the important thing is delivering the car on time!) - the only draw back is you might not get to go somewhere you want to...like Mississippi! :( But you will certainly get the chance to see lots of the States!

My mate challenged me to re-write the words to one of the tunes we enjoyed repeatedly during our trip across the U.S. and back...here is the Coasties Coast to Coast version of the Stealers Wheel classic..Stck in the middle with you!

Stolen Wheels*
Stuck in a Honda with You

Well New York is where we started out right,
Dropped to D.C. aft’ a couple of nights,
Got a Honda once we got way down there,
Took the lonely fifty road to nowhere,
Mountains to the left of me,
Broccoli to the right, here I am,
Stuck in a Honda with you.

Yes I'm stuck in the Honda with you,
Worried aliens will notice us soon,
It's so hard to keep the shock from his face,
As we drop into Mick Hathaways place,
Mountains to the left of me,
Wild Rivers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in a Honda with you.

Well we started out with nothing,
And then you planned the route supreme,
From D.C. to San Francisco,
The trip was a total scream,
Scream.... Scream.....

From Monterey we headed down to L.A.,
Via San Fran where we stopped for a day,
Picked another Honda up real quick,
Then got our kicks out on route sixty six,
Canyons to the left of me,
Deserts to the right,
Here I am, stuck in a Honda with you.

Well we started out with nothing,
And then you planned the route supreme,
From L.A. to Milwaukee,
The trip was a total scream,
Scream.... Scream.....

Well we fled Milwaukee before the night,
Spent five hours in Chicago, did sights,
Then from Detroit we flew in a Firebird,
Down to Connecticut via Catskills bears,
Lakes to the left of me,
Niagara to the right, here I am,
Stuck in a Grand Prix with you,
Yes I'm stuck a Grand Prix with you,
Stuck in a Grand Prix with you.

Yes a few things may need explaining as they are very much in jokes but I still think it's pretty cool! :applause:
