View Full Version : The World Cup
Dolores 07-05-2006, 04:38 PM oooh hark at me starting a thread in the Sports Section ... and about football!!
So will you be enthralled with all the tv coverage of the world cup? or couldn't you give a monkeys?
Its got to be worth the perv surely??????????
mmmmmm a hot and sweaty Becks, cant wait :naughty:
maxine 07-05-2006, 04:45 PM I love the World Cup and will be watching every match I can. Last time we even had a telly at work and made all the under 5s watch it. Where was the last world cup held? As I seem to remember watching an England match at about 9.30am, during milk time...
Dolores 07-05-2006, 04:45 PM I like the world cup and even took half day last year to watch one of England's matches!
I love the patriotism it inspires and how one nation comes together under the football umbrella, few other things we have unite us quite so strongly I feel.
I'm not a football fan, the offside rule is a complete mystery to me but I do like watching the world cup games.
I wonder if Haydon might give us a section for it? where all things world cup could be discussed from which referree is the biggest **** to which footballer has the nicest legs, to which was the worst case of gamesmanship through to which football team has the nicest coloured strip!!
i for one would enjoy that! Haydon what do you say?!
Seabreeze 07-05-2006, 04:46 PM I watch all the England games and then usually watch the others as they are approaching the final.
Patsy 07-05-2006, 04:55 PM I shall be watching as many matches as I can. :good:
I shall be watching as many matches as I can. :good:
yeah, well you are a perv, just like me!:naughty: :applause:
I shall be watching all the England matches. I do remember during the last world cup they delayed the school start time so that the kids could stay at home and watch the match, which is a great idea as they would all have been late anyway.
Patsy 07-05-2006, 05:53 PM yeah, well you are a perv, just like me!:naughty: :applause:
Oh, no. It's purely for the football.
Rugby's much better for perving, trust me. ;)
Dolores 07-05-2006, 06:00 PM i worked in a factory for the last world cup and they showed all the big games in the canteen first thing in the morning. it was quite a bonding session for all involved ... shame they didn't let us have a few beers too!
As this year's world cup is in Germany I'm guessing that a lot of the games will start around midday.
Rugby's much better for perving, trust me. ;)
cant argue with ya there Patsy, one of my oldest friends used to go out with Rugby Lions physio......we used to go every home game...........well, it would have been so rude not to :w00t: Ooooo they had this Kiwi player for a year, he was a bit like Jonah Lomu (I know I cant spell it but you know who I mean) but far far far better looking.........it was worth every second stood in the cold :yahoo:
Bonsai 08-05-2006, 10:36 AM I like to watch all the England matches if i can.
When the last world cup was on, i was working in london - and often the matches started at about 7:30 am :bored: So i would get to London early, grab a bacon sarnie and a bottle of beer and join the rest of my colleagues in front of the telly which was in our board room. Swigging lager at 7:30am was great fun
I think most of the games are on during the evening - which is good news.
Fee For All 08-05-2006, 10:41 AM I think most of the games are on during the evening - which is good news.

I'm an abstainer
I'm an "other" - I may watch some matches depending on what I am doing.
Aondeag 11-05-2006, 10:00 AM I'm going to watch some of the matches.I'm not a fan of soccer at all but I do enjoy the atmosphere.
I'm going to try and watch all the Italy matches, then the semi's and stuff.
Patsy 11-05-2006, 10:17 AM Why the Italy matches, Aon?
Aondeag 11-05-2006, 11:49 AM Cos I like Italy, a lot.Also...I have some Italian friends in Dublin and if ya can't beat em...join them.
Ireland did not qualify... so I gotta pick someone.
gatubela 15-05-2006, 04:07 PM I'm not a football fan, the offside rule is a complete mystery to me
Its free wine coolers Dol!
Study it a bit, then ask all-knowing football guy in the pub to explain it.
Ask him to explain interfering with play, quote one or two well know examples that noone understands, and he announces"I'm off to the bar" and you say "mines a wine cooler".
And he's grateful if you don't ask any more questions.

wow! - i bet she's even replaced the wallpaper in her living room with Daily Star and News of the World (i'd be disappointed if she read such garbage in the first place though...) World Cup wall-charts. Go Dolly go!
Woodstock 15-05-2006, 11:35 PM Germany '06
(a.k.a. 'Deutschland zilch sechs'...i think...)
Everything in my life (not that there is that much to start with!) shuts down when a World cup comes around - one might say one suffers gladly from 'World Cup tunnel-vision', and this year shall be no different.
For me it's the tingles of that half-hour (perhaps even 24 hours) leading up to England's first match or the opening match of the tournament.
It's also catching sight of the wonderful yellow jerseys and blue shorts of Brazil - no greater sight in football really, and the eye-catching blue-and-white stripes of the Argentina strip.
But during this particular World Cup i'm particularly looking forward to watching Wayne Rooney (here's hoping anyway) terrorize other nations' defences - "OH MY GOD, HE'S GOT POSSESSION...AND HE'S COMING RIGHT AT US!!!" which can be translated into Trinidadian & Toboggan - apologies if i have that incorrect, as "OH LORD, DA BOY ERE HAS GOT DA BALL AND IS CHARGING REERT AT US", and observing whether or not our goalkeeper and defence is really worthy of the acclaim it recieves week in and week out during the domestic Premiership campaign, when they perform at the highest level (again, here's hoping...)
But there will also be goals scored that prompt the following response, or something very similar..."NO...NO....NO, that was just impossible! - how on earth did he score from there??" or "WHAT?...YOU WHAT??...YOU'RE 'AVIN A LAUGH!!...did you see how that ball dipped and swerved??". And you can bet your bottom five-pound note that the person solely responsible for such reactions will be a chap wearing a yellow jersey and a pair (why are they called 'pair' when there is only one?? - two pairs of shorts would surely mean there being four shorts...i don't know, maybe not...) blue shorts...
Ohh, it just can't come quick enough...
:tv_happy: <--- incidentally, he's laughing at Skinner & Baddiel's World Cup Fantasy Football (i do hope those two are around during the tournament) and not, i might add, Englands' woeful display against Sweden - i've placed a five-pound wager on it being a woeful display anyhow...
I love it and try to watch all the matches I can. I was actually going to conveniently visit my cousin in Germany while it was on but now she's decided to come over here to visit. Selfish cow.

Oh isn't she PJ, disown her....
mazwad 17-05-2006, 08:00 PM I am off to France on the 9th June and will be on the road for Englands first game but hope to watch some on the campsite. We are away for the whole of the first round games so I hope England make it through to the second round.
During the last world cup we were allowed to go to the lounge area at work to watch but had to make the time up after.
I never realised when I booked the holiday the significance of the dates and I am hoping it won't be too manic at the tunnel Friday night.
bridge 18-05-2006, 04:10 PM How long do we girls have to put up with the World Cup rubbish on the tv?:bag: Stupid brainless footballers. ( legs it)
Coastie 25-06-2006, 03:08 AM I love the world cup but never talke it too seriously although I watch alot of matches...
Do you realise that if, by some incredible miracle, we win England will hold the Football World Cup, Rugby World Cup and the Ashes all at the same time! :applause:
Only Australia can achieve the same accomplishment but it is still rather cool to think about!

That's the spirit:applause: Blind optimism:wink2:
Such a shame that, with a reasonably talented bunch of players and even a couple who could be termed "world-class", we've got such a motivational-vacuum for a manager....
Oh well, while they're still in we can dream.
I had visions of them watching Mexico play last night and saying "ah, so that's what you're supposed to do...." to themselves.
I don't mind England going out as much as I mind them looking defeated before they've even left the field.
Patsy 25-06-2006, 05:07 PM Well, we've managed to limp through another match, into the final 8. Is it possible that we could hobble all the way?

No chance! - we've been bloody awful (not up to scratch anyway) in 3-and-a-half of the four games we have played and quite simply there are at least six teams who have more reason than we do to proclaim themselves eventual (in this tournament) World Cup winners.
We should know by now that we're a Quarter-Final-standard team (Semi-Finals if we get favourable paths), and nothing more than that. It takes a special team/squad of players to lift a World Cup and England just don't have that.
Put it this way, it will require more than Wayne Rooney and set-pieces...
Patsy 25-06-2006, 05:41 PM Fair dos. Just thought I'd ask. :rain:
Bonsai 25-06-2006, 05:43 PM I have really enjoyed all the matches, and im really excited about next saturdays match .... but Mr.B booked a family BBQ for that day by accident and i have 15 people coming over around midday
I think i will have to force everyone to come indoors and watch the TV. That should go down well :bag:
Patsy 25-06-2006, 06:46 PM Be over about 1.30pm, Bons.

Patsy - i keep telling you, you are welcome (along with the motley crew) to come to my home whenever your little heart desires.

I would say "I agree", but then I'd have to get my coat.
Bons, would you lay on salad too? These girls desperately need to lose some weight. Unlike me, of course.
Bonsai 25-06-2006, 09:25 PM I was kinda hoping they wouldnt eat the shed ... only the burgers and sausages
