I thought it might be a good idea if we have our own World Cup fantasy league.
Amazon are running a fantasy game and I've set up our very own league - SO World Cup Fantasy League. It's free to join and there are some good prizes to be won as well.
Sign up here: http://ff2006.fantasyleague.com
and pick your team.

Once signed up, to join our league you will need to know the unique league pin - which is: 86

See if you can beat "H's Hopefulls"! :)

... woteva. Don't know... don't care. Are you joining the league?

Welcome aboard Mick!
Nice team - although I'm not sure about Barthez. He's sometimes genius and other times makes a complete mess of things. Zidane? Past it now!

mikado
11-05-2006, 06:40 PM
Uh I thought that of all my team Gary Neville was the dodgy one! :D

France are in a pretty soft group, so I don't expect them to leak too many goals. I'm hoping Zidane will take the free kicks and get a few assists from crosses too.

Rob - you're a brave man putting Schwarzer in goal! Not only is he genuinely not good enough for Scotland (and if you're a goalie that ain't good! ) but I reckon the Brazilians will score a hatful against him.

Helen - you're more than brave to pick Owen Hargreaves! :D

I guess I had better confess to doing a "lucky dip" then hadnt I - I havent heard of HALF of the "rest of the world" players, so decided if I did it that way I cant blame myself if they are cack - although I would have prefered to have the lovely Becks in my team, for purely pervy reasons of course

Ah well found Hayd! - i'll certainly be having a butchers at the player lists and pikking (sometimes this can be spelt 'picking' also) a squad of me own before it all kicks off. Not sure how to submit a team on the Survivor Online League though, but i'll do my best.

I must give prior warning to all rivals that i once finished 6th (3 places outside the 3rd and final cash prize position - approx. £5000) in the Sunday People Fantasy Football Competition a few years back, and also finished a very respectable (but not respected by anybody here at this forum i imagine!) 21st position in the Daily Star World Cup 2002 Fantasy Football Competition - so i'm good...and i'm shrewd...and i'm just warnin' ya...:yahoo:

Although I do hope the boys aren't too rough with her. I imagine she's better at hockey.

Patsy

No. I imagine her in a rather fetching empire line frock, wielding a croquet mallet with her second cousin, Rupert. She is flirting a little, the sun is shining and a squirrel is nibbling his nuts on a near-by branch.

'86 is fine - it was a wunderbar year made even more wunderbar by the Mexico '86 World Cup, right Hayd?....right! (still needs a couple of of words to precede the numbers though i think...perhaps Fantasy Forum '86...or maybe Give Davina the boot '86 - (Gareth Hale paid me handsomely to print that...)

The one-man Anti-Davina parade gains precious momentum even here on a World Cup thread!:wink2:

ok we got 11 teams in our private league now!

I have to manually approve teams wanting to join our league, so sorry for the delay. You're no longer "pending".

There are some good prizes to be had - Xbox's, LCD TV's, PSP, MP3 players, shirts etc. So if you haven't signed up, do so now! It's free!

Okay, I'm registered (not disabled or insane - though people would argue the latter i ought to be) and ready for action...

Woodstock's 'Only The Strong Survive' XI are made up of the following players...

GK ~ Gianluigi Buffon (Italia)

DEF ~ Alessandro Nesta (Italia)
DEF ~ Carles Puyol (Espana)
DEF ~ Jean-Alain Boumsong (France) (...aha!, there is a method to this particular piece of madness...i know he can't defend for toffee, but Thuram will help him along...if you see what i mean?...)
DEF ~ Lilian Thuram (France)

MID ~ Michael Ballack (Deutschland)
MID ~ Steven Gerrard (Angleterre)
MID ~ Frank Lampard ~ (Angleterre)
MID ~ Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

ATT ~ Ronaldo (Brasil...so you see, there ARE two Ronaldos after all!)
ATT ~ Adriano (Brasil)

...wot no Ronaldinho?

I wish you luck...:boxing:

Woodstock
31-05-2006, 09:24 AM
1st Place - Woodstock's 'Only The Strong Survive' XI :flex:
Solid throughout, strong spine (it would be a case of two strong spines if there was another keeper in goal alongside Buffon), stubborn at the back, devastating down the flanks, and merciless up front - couldn't be asking for more really! The one (and only) weak link in the team is Mr. Boumsong - but he'll be just fine in that French back four, and I'm just a wee bit worried that Ballack may not feature from the start. Aside form those minor concerns, O.T.S.S. must be strong favourites...even if i do say so myself!:yahoo:

2nd Place - Fat Loser's All Stars
A strong back four (five, even), except for perhaps Vidic, who may be part of a Serbia team that concedes a few against Argentina and Holland, but we'll see. Being a Manchester United fan I want to see him do well anyway. But then I could say the same for Gabriel Heinze of Argentina, and Ruud van Nistelrooy and Van der Sar of Holland really. Also possesses a strikeforce to be feared in Henry and Ronaldinho. It'll be a close battle between the All Stars and Mazwad's XI...for second place...of course.

3rd Place - Mazwad's Men O'Paws
I like what you're doing defensively, but I do have major concerns regarding the selection of Makelele and to an extent Boa Morte - the latter being a bit of a loose cannon, and the former just being a misfiring one. However, apart from those glaring weaknesses down the left, nobody should fu*k with your strike partnership of Tevez and Ronaldinho - awesome!

Wooden Spoon Award - a tightly-fought contest between 'Mars' Red Brigade' and 'H's Hopefuls'. Mars' Brigade look like a very strong XI - well, X actually, because I'm not too sure Abbiati will be favoured in goal over Buffon (in fact I'm not too sure Abbiati is even there), but I actually think this lot are still good enough to contest for Runners-Up spot, if that one particular issue is dealt with quickly.

As for H's bunch, I'm not too sure what's going on in the back four with regards to Ponzio, Rodriguez, and Gilberto, and I'm a wee bit concerned about your left flank with Kosowski - you obviously know something I don't about that lot. But, quite a strong selection in the main.

As for the rest, 'Cromer's Crabs' (...I hope they don't move like crabs) are keeping faith with the 'old guard' of Vieira and Zidane in midfield. It's a gamble but it may pay off, and also a shrewd selection of Milan Baros, who suddenly becomes a good player in tournaments like these.

Buzz has plumped for Lebo-Lebo - which has left me baffled, and has also opted for Rooney from the start, and therefore is obviously investing more hope in England's best hope than the majority of English folk. But van Nistelrooy will grab some goals for 'the Babes' and they have a fairly secure back four...apart form Lebo-Lebo.

'If You're Lucky' is a very strong XI, particularly at the back, and with an extremely potent pairing of Tevez and Torres up front - this lot may surprise...but it's good to see this manager has a sense of humour, demonstrated perfectly by the selection of Owen Hargreaves.

'Amber Gamblers' I'm a little bit concerned about, as they really look like a very effective lot. It's touch-and-go at to whether Barthez shall start but look at that fron pairing of Ronaldinho and Adriano...almost as good as my own pairing of Ronaldo and Adriano.

I think Fee has based her selections on the most humorous names she could possibly find (either that or she's ventured into the 'lucky dip') so I'm guessing that her participation in this league isn't quite as intense as my own - she's just having a wee bit of fun, something which is clearly evident in her choosing a player with the surname 'Scotland'- well done Fee!. I'm also liking 'Loco' and the wonderfully-named 'Yapi-Yapo', and 'captain Kaka' deserves a wee mention too.

'Not Good Enough For Scotland' may prove to be a force to be reckoned with too.

I don't know about you lot but I can't soddin' way for this World Cup to get started...

...good luck...and may the best annoying-poll creator win! :surrender:

I just had a wee look at that myself Patsy and spotted the following instruction. I wish I could make transfers myself...but I'm still waiting to be granted entry into this dang league - I think Haydon's pretending to be on holiday or something just so my lot won't have an opportunity to wipe the floor with all who stand in their way...

The 'transfer code' you require to complete your transfers can be obtained from the Amazon.co.uk World Cup (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/16382581/ref=amb_right-2_53823191_1/203-1881997-9188707) store. This code will change each week so don't forget to check back for the latest code.

Better late than never but I have set up a team, couldn't have the players I would have liked from Sweden or Holland now they are out but never mind!

Click on Fixtures on the left hand side.

The next Germany match is the first one in the next phase, when you will be given another 4 transfers.

Yes, but no but...

How do you know who is going through? Or is likely to go through? Are they all playing each other?

sorry to be thick but with my four transfers I have available do I just dump the players that have gone and pick four new ones, and is it still only two players allowed from each country?

They are still playing 2nd round matches, but the quarter finals start on Friday. If you click on the Fixtures button on the left hand side it tells you who has played and who is due to play.

Looks like Sherlock and I are both guilty of not reading the transfer rules properly.

Take care, chaps. From what I can make out, you have 12 transfers altogether. You can make up to 8 in the first round, up to 4 in the second and up to 4 thereafter. We've blown all of ours now, so fill your boots folks! :wallbash: :wallbash:

Now I've done my pants in this league, I really want to sit back and enjoy the football.

Tonight's match between Spain and France made me realise that I had been wanting teams to win for the wrong reasons.

I have two Spanish forwards in my team, but in RL would have supported France.

France have just won and I'm really, really pleased. For the right reasons.

Vive la France!!!! :w00t: :good:

Right so, I am not last, but I am not first either....

am i somewhere in the middle then, and would that be topish middle or bottomish middle?

I could look myself, but this is much more fun.

 ...i think i can relate to that Pat. However, i really did want the ol' Spaniards to put one over the French tonight (regardless of fantasy allegiances). But my first natural response to the final whistle in most of these games has been to jump on the pc and check out if i'm beating your score:sly: ...when i should really have been reflecting on 'what a thoroughly fabulous game of football that was' etc. etc.

...right...i'm off now...to check if i'm beating your score...:good:

The second option. And very close to it.
