As a counter weight to the topic below. How many things that are great do you do that do not involve alcohol?

For example for me, golf, cycling, church, reading, children, walks in the mountains with my big dog etc..

Drinking, after all, aint all that...?

There have been a couple of alcohol involved memorable times, but mainly without.

Not all good memories either. My one time drinking and driving on a dark country road in Costa Rica, dodging a pothole ended up with the car spinning into a ditch. Wecouldn't get the car out, so the next morning we went back and it was perched precariously over a 50 foot drop with two wheels off the road. THAT was memorable. I have the photos!

Hill walking, cycling, walks along the beach, days out, gardening (although once it`s done it`s nice to sit in it with a bottle of wine) shopping. Am sure there is much more but will have a thnk

Singing for concerts and singing in concerts, best done without alcohol. Alcohol dulls the senses and makes you more prone to mistakes. Alcohol also dries the throat but because the senses are dulled into a false sense of relaxation you can also damage your vocal chords.

Work, I have strong feelings that being under the influence for this is not a good idea.

I do prefer alcohol for everything else, not a lot. But moderate drinking say 3 or 4 glasses of wine. mm lovely.

Hello Isle of Weather,

I'd need paying to go and watch golf or play it. My cycle doesn't like hills.

I don't mind going for a walk in the countryside but I'm not into these extremely long treks or cross coutry fell walking, even had I a St Bernard dog with a Brandy flask round the neck, I couldn't be harrassed to go walking great distances. That's not to say that Mr M and I, don't go walking we do, but I think we'd be letting the side down if we didn't admit to a drink before hand, and another on return to the caravan.

I have only had two experiences of being bad with the drink both of them many years ago. The first was a bank holiday weekend, on the Monday I was still under the influence from the Sunday and walked into a lamp post. Still swear it moved to this day. The second I'm not sure about whether it was an uncooked Kentucky Fried Meal that upset my stomach or the drink, I don't know. In my birthday week, I did have far more to drink than normal, but it was quite well paced over several days, I didn't mix my drinks and I did eat rather well. However, the added stress or tension caused through a slowish week has added to my efforts of this week.

I also think its quite pleasant to have a long glass of wine and tonic when using the computer, provided it is kept at a safe distance from the keyboard and electrical sockets etc, relaxing for the completion of any home business e-mails or chatting on SO.

Oh yes, the demon mixture....alcohol+kareoke

Has anyone woken up after an alcohol fueled Kareoke session and not regretted it?

I learned one of lifes golden lessons there: NEVER try singing Bon Jovi after one too many wines.

Since starting work and having to get up at 5.30 to set off at 6am, I thought I'd be shattered, not be able to have a drink the night before an early, and just be miserable about having to get up that early.

But I actually really enjoy it.
Driving into work for 45 minutes with hardly any other cars about, the sun shining, the radio on, I'm just a happy bunny.

As for other stuff enjoyed without alcohol, it has to be my kids.
For example, today just walking them to cubs, and chatting about nothing much really. just makes me smile.

I never have anything to drink whenever I am stage managing or crewing - and usually have a good time.

Tend to make up for the lack of alcohol when the show is over though!

physical endeavours of any kind should always be done sober.

I was begged once to make up a foursome for a doubles match in the local tennis club - BEGGED I tell yas - after I had had a rather liquid lunch with Eric. The results are still talked about up there in hushed tones.....

snorkling after 3 pints is a complete no no.

and I won't mention the amazing ability I have to play a golf ball backwards after a sherry or two.....

so for years now all of the above are done without a dropeen and are much the more enjoyable for that.

 French? Religious? He's not...no...couldn't be.

Nothing to do with the Da Vinci Code is he? Did your Ballygowan water turn into Beaujolais perchance?

And a carpenter. Hmmm.

Running.

Apart from tonight when took a new route along the river and stung my lower body to bits from over grown nettles that obscured my path and made me pull all my lower leg muscles as I skidded blindley on an unscene path.

Got home. Got ****ed.

I drank a grand total of three pints during last month while on the road...I had two at a BBQ yesterday...three drinks on Friday night at a friends party...I have just a fab a time with or without drink but saddly when I am in the party mood most people can't tell if I have been drinking or not...I behave just as unashamedly either way and have only ever had one black hole in my memory of a night out...taxi journey home after Portsmouth Mini-meet! :bag: Still can't remember it!

I also enjoy...walking/hiking, writing, church, cinema, general gathering of friends, outdoor pursuits and you certainly do not drink when diving! :bored:

Like I said...It's hard to tell if I have been drinking or not half the time...however I am usually fully aware of the fact by morning...you guys were up and drinking coffee before I finally emerged
