View Full Version : Wimbledon 2006
Dolores 26-06-2006, 06:22 PM anyone for tennis?
I LOVE Wimbledon. Tennis is about the only game i really understand.
I shall be cheering the spanish chappie on this year Nader, I think his name is.
I went to Wimbledon once many moons ago and saw McEnroe play Mayotte back in the 1980s. I particularly remember it cos I "snotted" a bogey out on the back of the lady sat in front of me when I was snorting at something my auntie had said.http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_2_26.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSYYYYYYAXGB)

Bonsai 26-06-2006, 07:17 PM Oh Dol, have you been on the happy juice ?
I have just laughed out loud at the 'snotting' incident, and i even read it out to Mr.B with tears rolling down my cheeks. Fabulous :w00t:
I have to admit that im not into Wimbledon. I have watched it on occasion - especially when Henman was playing and got 'near' the finals. But im not really interested in cheering on the foreign players.
Woodstock 26-06-2006, 11:10 PM I only want to know one thing...:eat:
...when are the Russian females on court??:good:
Woodstock 26-06-2006, 11:17 PM Actually i don't mind a bit of the old strawberries 'n' cream lark every summer, but it's also World Cup year and priorities are priorities.
I'll try and watch some of the Federerererereerererer (i think there may be more 'er's in his name but anyway...) games and as many of the games involving female Russian pin-ups as i possibly can.
I love McEnroe and think he's doing a fine job as a commentator these days - keeps him out of trouble!
It's just a shame that the World Cup has 'advantage' in this particular head-to-head...
maxine 27-06-2006, 06:53 AM I'm off to Wimbledon today! I've never been before so I hope I find it OK. Thank goodness I didn't get tickets for yesterday. Unfortunately I've got Henman! Still Nadal and Roddick are on later.
I'm taking my son out of school for the day and I'm going to say he was sick. I know I'm a bad parent but I'm sure if I'd asked for the day they would've said no and I didn't want to take that risk.
I've got enough food to feed the 5 thousand...
Dolores 27-06-2006, 07:04 AM Unfortunately I've got Henman! ...
ah yes who else wants to join the "we don't like Tim" brigade? PJ are you on board again this year!!!! :w00t:

It's not just "don't like Tim" I can't stand that petulant teenager Andy Murray, even though he is Scottish. He has a face like a squashed wasp and he really needs to control his temper.
I miss Agassi.........
bridge 27-06-2006, 02:40 PM Dol you are a scream!!!!!!! :w00t: (snotting on that ladys back) Well i do quite like Wimbledon, i like watching the men and their balls banging........................................... ........err against the net.

Wonder if Max being in the crowd is putting Tim off his stroke?:w00t: He is into his 5th set against some other bloke..........well, he'll be out next round even if he wins this one!

I think Andy Murray's OK, considering he was raised by the tennis-mother from hell. God help the poor soul if his career goes down the same route as Henman's

She obviously wants her son to achieve what she couldn't. I do wish him all the best (same as I do with England in the World Cup) but if he comes up against Agassi (I thought he wasn't playing this year but caught a glimpse of him coming on court *hubb* *hubba*), I think I will be supporting Agassi!
As long as he doesn't do the Henman punch!
Woodstock 27-06-2006, 10:56 PM has a face like a squashed wasp
...right, i'm borrowing that...:good:
G'wan Borg! ...Lendl! ...Conners?
Woodstock 28-06-2006, 07:30 PM SHOCK! HORROR!...
...he's out! :applause:
Fee For All 28-06-2006, 07:33 PM Oh dear what a shame
Andrea 28-06-2006, 09:45 PM Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. What will we call Henman hill now?!?!
Loserville lump!
Hope you had a fabby time Maxine. Did you actually get seats in centre court, you lucky thing.
I once saw Andre Agassi play a tournament in Miami and I loved it.
Woodstock 28-06-2006, 10:06 PM :rain: ...what a complete 'loody waste of time he was! :pooh:
:eat: ...so...who's the next big hope of UK tennis?...(without mentioning Murray...)
Petchey...check!
Bates...check!
Castle...check! (how did he get that GMTV gig??)
Henman...check!
Lloyd...check! (or was he an Aussie??)
Lee...check!
....there's gotta be someone out there...
maxine 29-06-2006, 07:04 AM Hope you had a fabby time Maxine. Did you actually get seats in centre court, you lucky thing.
I had No 1 Court seats Andrea. We saw Henman - there was lots of 'Come on Tim' which was getting on my wick.
Anyway, we had a great day. And I had my first trip on the tram. We saw Federer on one of the practise courts - he was a lot taller than I expected.
And we walked past Virginia Wade.
We watched some of the match between Nadal and Bogdanovich but left before the end as it was getting late, but that match was more ooh and aahish than Henman's.
The whole place was fantastic. Really well maintained and so clean and there were plenty of staff around.
I'll definitely be putting in for the ballot again next year.
Bella 29-06-2006, 07:31 PM Did you get any strawberries & cream, Max? Glad you had a great time - a couple of my friends are there today but not sure which court they are on.
Looks like Andy Murray is doing the business against the French guy and as for Henman, he was good while he lasted but his chances of winning Wimbledon are so over!
Agassi is still in though, up against Nadal tomorrow.
Woodstock 29-06-2006, 08:04 PM as for Henman, he was good while he lasted
 ...was he??
Bella 29-06-2006, 09:11 PM  ...was he??
Well, he got to the semi-finals a few times and he did win a few tournaments, he wasn't exactly rubbish was he?
Woodstock 29-06-2006, 09:12 PM ...bring back the wooden rackets...that's what i'm saying!:good:
....retailing at £1.99 from the local post-office (1982 prices) - that's about three dollars seventy 'sippy gal...oh she's not listenin' anyway!
Dolores 29-06-2006, 09:14 PM Agassi is still in though, up against Nadal tomorrow.
oh no! I'm so torn over these two.
I love Agassi (for obvious reasons!) but I think Nadal is THE rising star (or has he already risen?!) of tennis.
i hope they are on late so that I can watch the match when I get home from work.
Woodstock 29-06-2006, 09:16 PM Well, he got to the semi-finals a few times and he did win a few tournaments, he wasn't exactly rubbish was he?
...sorry Bella...right where were we??
no he wasn't ridiculously bad...nor was he bad, but never for one moment did i ever believe he would win any of those semi-finals...and never for one moment did he look like he would. (read the same for England at the World Cup)
Federer is great. Sampras is great. Borg is great...s'all i'm saying chuck!
Woodstock 29-06-2006, 09:17 PM I love Agassi (for obvious reasons!)
:eat:...what are the obvious reasons Dolly?

Me too Dol, I love Agassi (Steffi is a lucky woman) always have from the minute I saw him win The French Open all those years ago but Nadal has a real passion about him and he done brilliant today when he came back from 2 sets down and sent the American guy packing.
And I'll probably end up channel flicking as the Argentina v Germany game will probaby be on at the same time.............plus I have a suitcase to pack!
Woodstock 29-06-2006, 09:20 PM he was good while he lasted
I'm terribly sorry Bella, you did after all state that he was 'good' and not great.
...tcha tcha, this means i'll have to alter the status of the legends to keep my 'argument' a valid one...
This won't wash...
Federer was good. Sampras was good. Borg was good.

Yes, no way was Tim in the same league as the above-mentioned and he was never going to win Wimbledon, he just didn't have what the others had but to have got to the semi-finals is still an acheivment in itself.............:shocking: can't believe I am actually defending Tim!! :shocking:
Plus Tim doesn't have the PHWOAR factor as shown in the above piccy..............thanks for that Dol, I am off to bed now with that image in my mind!
Woodstock 29-06-2006, 09:22 PM I'll probably end up channel flicking as the Argentina v Germany game will probaby be on at the same time
gosh!...Agassi vs. Messi
:sly: ...it's a tough one.
bridge 30-06-2006, 04:09 PM It's Agassi's last Wimbledon isn't it? i hope he does well,he's still got it, what a hunk.

...my bad! - sorry, i'd never seen him with a wooden racket before.
ah yes who else wants to join the "we don't like Tim" brigade? PJ are you on board again this year!!!! :w00t:
I certainly am. Let the slagging match commence.
It's not just "don't like Tim" I can't stand that petulant teenager Andy Murray, even though he is Scottish. He has a face like a squashed wasp and he really needs to control his temper.
Totally agree Bella. And he doesn't seem to have an ounce of personality.
Woodstock 01-07-2006, 06:17 PM :ranting:...has Nadal knocked out Agassi??
...an answer in the positive would go some way to curing my desperate state of moroseness at England's pathetic penalty shooutout World Cup exit!
Woodstock 03-07-2006, 12:32 AM Wow! - just found out Murray defeated Roddick. That's impressive, and i couldn't imagine 'the Henboy' beating that fella. I think it was Roddick who made the final last year too.
Will he become the first Scottish player to win a mens singles final at Wimbledon? I hope so.:good:
"G'wan Muzza"
...it's what i'm callin' him!
Woodstock 03-07-2006, 03:30 PM Just found out Murray lost to a player i'd never even heard of before the Championships began...
...i'd say 'hard lines' Andrew:hug:but i think that's where some of the problem lies with British tennis.
Great final, was sticking up for underdog Nadal and the third set (the only one he won) was great... Federer made the rest of the game look to easy though... it's gonna take a good player to beat him!
Nadal plays better on clay apparently while federer is the master of grass... so nadal wins all the one's we don't see or care about in britain.
Also Nadal is just a nipper, so maybe he may challenge federer even on grass in the future...
Or maybe Murray or another British talent could overtake both........................................ Nah.... maybe not!
Coastie 10-07-2006, 03:34 AM I was distracted by the Jimmy Stewart double bill on ITV so didn't watch the final...mind you it was fairly obvious who was going to win...
I've gone off Andy Murray now after his comments concerning the England footie team...when will the Scots grow up and get over it...what's done is done! :glare:

Oi!!! I think you will find that Andy's remarks were given a bit of tweak by the English press, he was stated as saying later that he hoped England would do well. The emails that he received on the back of this were worse than what he had "allegedly" said. ;)
Federer didn't even break sweat did he? Calm, cool and collected - I was glad he won and hope he goes onto win next year so that he can match the brilliant Borg!
I was pleased for Amelie too although I would have been equally happy if Justine had won, I was just delighted that Amelie put an end to that rude grunter!
