Just watched The Godfather Part II ... for the umpteenth time! a true masterpiece only bettered by Godfather (the original) or is it? I never can make up my mind!

Will watch Godfather Part III later - it's part of a trilogy box set - I've seenGodfather Part III once before and know it is the weakest of the three films, but I'm sure it will still be a lot better than a lot of other films!

Hostage with Bruce Willis. Good film and much better than I expected.

16 Blocks again with Bruce. Was quite good but one I probably wouldn`t watch again.

Scarey Movie 4. Much the same as all the others and the best parts were shown on tv in the previews.

The night before last I watched Touching the Void. It's not what I would usually class as "my" sort of film, mountain climbing, etc. but I was fascinated by the write-up and the documentary style and knowing it was a true story (the one where one of the climbers falls and his mate has to make a decision to be dragged off himself and both die or cut his friend off to almost certain death).

It was on late but I was fascinated by this man's will to survive. About 10 minutes to go and my eyes were drooping and I was struggling to stay awake. Boy was I mad when I woke up about an hour after it had finished :wallbash:

I just had to see the ending so I suffered 10 hours of slow computer time while I was downloading it - just to catch the last 10 minutes.

I enjoyed the film. The fact that it was narrated by the 2 men involved spoilt it a bit because you knew from the start that he did survive, but it was fascinating to see how he did it. Had I not known it was a true story I would have said it was beyond belief.

I just purchased 'Hamburger Hill' this morning for a price similar to that for which you would pay for an actual hamburger (but not a hill) in the Chelsea/Fulham area - £3.91 no less!

As for the last movie i watched, well, that was American Movie - The Making of Northwestern, which essentially (...it's not all that essential in actual fact!) is a documentary centred around the moviemaking exploits of an amateur filmmaker. It's highly-watchable stuff and rather comical in parts. I reckon our Coastie will have seen this - she'll likely know what i'm waffling on about!

It has a quite poignant end to it all as the chap's uncle - Uncle Bill, dies shortly after the end of shooting and leaves his nephew $50,000 to complete one of his projects. I only wish my life had such poignant moments as that...not wishing death on anybody of course!

I spotted (all too subliminally!) that someone mentioned they had watched Godfather Part I or II or beyond recently, but i can't for the life of me locate that post and i'm far too lazy to stray any lower than 100 so bug*er that!), but anyway, i watched both Godfather I & II early last week and thoroughly enjoyed both films. I've heard it been said that Godfather II is 'better' than the first but i would disagree with that. The sequel is much slower and contains less surprises and therefore doesn't quite live up to the original Godfather in that respect. But it does feature Robert De Niro alongside Al Pacino (although they don't actually appear together at any point during the film as the scenes that De Niro features in are shot retrospectively, which is a bit of a shame really)

Pacino is bloody awesome, Marlon Brando is close enough to awesome, and Robert Duvall and James Caan weren't exactly the worst choices for their particular roles either.

In the second offering De Niro is awesome and Pacino maintains.

I watched 'Very Bad Things' last night. It was the blackest of black comedies with my old friend Christian Slater in fine form. Personally I think he's even more gorgeous in the flesh and up close. Do you agree Dolores?

I saw this great film on telly last nite....it was called 'Misery' and James Caan and Martha Stewart were in it....or maybe it was Kathy Bates.About a ded famous author wot gets stranded and rescued by a psycho fan, and held captive etc etc.
It was FANTASTIC.
Really eeerie.....that woman was CRAZY! I Loved it.
And the waitress at the end when she said to him...'I'm your number one fan'.
Oh shudder!
AND the closing song, while the credits rolled was 'I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places'.
Now that was a nice touch.

High Fidelity - i was going to watch this the other night on Sky. I have never seen it before, but i like the sound of it. Unfortunately Mr.B facied a film on ITV that evening ... and i lost :bored:

Da Vin Code. Certainly no where near as good as the book and didn`t explain a load of things either. Was entertaining but not one I will watch again.

Meet the Fockers. As Bon said - not as good as the first. Dustin Hoffman was on top form though and made the film for me.

Yes I want to see this as well. From what I have seen it looks good and has a good cast but I am worried that

1. It`s overhyped and
2. It`s a remake

crikey!, i've almost forgotten what a film is...what is a film??

It's been a while since i watched any movie - i've recorded one or two recent ones (i'm constantly recording 'one or two recent ones' and now have a library which is chock-a-block with 'one or two recent ones') and i don't get down to the cinema quite as much as what i used to (...'bout once in the last seven years...:( )...

When in doubt i just stick Jaws on - works every time.:good:

I think in order to get with the programme once again, i may have to bring back 'Woodstock's Video Store'...(ask no questions i'll tell you no lies)

Actually, on reflection that was a shameful venture and can never ever be allowed to resurface...now then, where did i put those chipmunk suits??

I had a cracking double whammy of: Dog Town Z-Boys (skateboarding) and Riding Giants (surfing) the other day...what an excellent couple of bits of film making. They are documentaries by the same film maker who was heavily involved in the skateboard scene during it's early years and also enjoyed the odd bit of surfing...you will be wowed if you watch either...trust me! :w00t: :sun:

Are they old movies or new? This movie genre is surprisingly quite entertaining, even if you're not a skateboarder or surfer...which i'm not.
I think skateboarding and particularly surfing is much more popular in the south of England than it is 'up north' - i certainly got a sense of that during my fairly brief time spent in Somerset where a lot of the students i knew were quite keen on the old surfing/skateboarding lark, particularly the Bournemouth lot.

I used to skateboard meself back in the early 80's - we lived at the foot of a big hill (well, it was mountainous back then), and we'd 'catamaran' (two skateboards joined together and a lot of faith in cars not coming up from the opposite direction - if there was then you'd split and go off in opposite directions and more often than not would end up in a garden hedge :surrender: ) all the way down it.

Soon lost interest in all that nonsense though. Footy was my calling.

Woodsy...both films are a few of years old now at least...Z-dogs was the guys first one, and the scene he was heavily involved in, and then came Riding Giants...both tell the stories about how the sports came to be as big as they are today from the roots...it salutes those who cut new paths in the sports...both are brilliant!

very well put Coaster.

The titles have been duly noted and if either or both appear on the telly anytime soon i shall have a wee watch (they sound like the type of films you are likely to come across in the special offer dvd section at the local s/mkt...97p-£5.99 range. It's unlikely i'll spot them but if i do...):good:

What are the soundtracks like...do they have soundtracks??

Coastie
24-06-2006, 06:42 PM
they aren't that great on soundtracks...what there is comes from the hard core skaters and surf scene. There is more narrative from the films maker and those who were there! :cool2:

I watched it too Bella (2nd time). It's a strange film, I can't make up my mind if I like it or not. I didn't realise the first time that Jane Horrocks was actually singing all those songs, I thought they were dubbed and I agree she was amazing.

I was pleasantly surprised. It was definately better than some of the other computer animated ones we've had to put up with this year, such as the awful 'CARS'.

Silly story about a possessed house, but very well done. A good idea to do it in animation and not live action as that would have been too over the top.

We watched 'School of Rock' last night. It stars Jack Black as a no hoper musician who somehow blags his way into being a supply teacher at a fairly posh school and he teaches the kids how to be in a rock band.

It was definitely watchable, mainly due to the charm and charisma of Jack Black, but it was a trite storyline and very silly! Joan Cusack was very good in it too and the kids weren't toooo annoyingly american (like, Barney the Dinosaurs friends for example!!!).

Dol, I've sat through this film so many times now, I can quote from it!

It's one of the boys' favourites and actually, it's not a bad film. Jack Black really didn't have to act much in this, did he?

Confetti - I liked it, it was a kind of mock-documentary on weddings and very funny.

Full of people from other UK comedies - that guy from The Office, a few from Green Wing and several others that I recognised but couldn't remember where from. Possibly not for kids due to nudity though (one of the couples were naturists!)

I;ve just watched Five Easy Pieces with Jack Nicholoson.

He was very good in it, it was a very good script and well directed ... even though I thought the ending was a bit arty - in fact actually a lot of it was arty, but the end was particularly.

Jack Nicholoson's films have lately been smoozy rom coms - he is much better than that (although As Good As It Gets is excellent). I watched him with Diane Keaton in Something's Gotta Give the other night - they were both very good in it but the script was just too ordinary.

I also noticed that The Shining was on TCM tonight - but I was way too cowardly to watch that film!

I nodded off for at least 20 mins, which irks me when I've paid to get in and see it!! ... but it really wasn't worth the effort of staying awake for.

my son did snigger a few times (so did I) but overall we both agreed it was pretty crap!

it was formulaic down to the last frame ... almost like someone had typed in key words and got a storyline off pat to match the characters, sometimes it works fabulously (Shrek 1 and 2, Finding Nemo, Toy Story 1 and 2) other times it fails dismally (Open Season, The Incredibles).

I also ate a pile of nacho chips and synthetic cheese sauce which was foul, fattening and expensive!

It wasn't just the make up though was it. She acted ugly with that ungainly walk, the way she spoke, her whole body language. I hope she won a oscar for that role (did she?).

I found it a chilling film and wanted to know more about her time on death row. To me that is always baffling to spend 12 years on death row - I don't see why it takes so long if someone's been found guilty (not that I'm an advocate of the death penalty you understand!).

I remember reading The Onion Film a long time ago (never saw the film) and the time that the two men spent on death row was the most fascinating and insightful part of the book for me. Excellent book btw - I thoroughly recommend it.

Hello Islandman! good to see you again, hope you are well and looking forward to Christmas. are you in the States at the moment and have you got any travel plans for 2007?

back on topic ...

I watched The Usual Suspects the other day - it was rather marvellous and absorbing (I know it's a favourite of yours Coastie!).

It is my fave all time film Dol...an absolute masterpiece done on a shore string budget aswell on the whole! :good:

Many a quote has arisen from this film...

'and like that he's gone'
'Who the @@@@ is Keyser Soze'
'The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist'

Aparently during filming of the line up scene none of the actors could keep a straight face...this annoyed Bryan Singer but eventually he used it to his advantage in the end and it works very well in the film...'Give me the keys mother @@@@@@' - one of the reasons for the giggles was that Kevin Spacey kept pooting...really smelly ones to!

I won a DVD of the film once by entering a Usual Suspect competition in total film...I really wanted the star prize of a one day screenwriting workshop but hey!

It is a masterpiece isn't it but I just wish I could watch it and never know the ending - the first time I watched it, the ending when everything started to fit into place and the penny dropped was just brilliant!

Yes, back in the states...unfortunately. But I am living it up in NYC. So much to see and do here..so am always keeping busy. No travel plans for 2007 as of yet (other than Las Vegas for New Year's), but am looking for the next place to go. May make it back to London at some point to visit since flights aren't too expensive from NYC.

Ok, to get back on topic...I attempted to go see Apocalypto the other day but failed as I went at the wrong time. whoops. will try again soon and let you know how it is. ;-)

Went to see "Open Season" with the school yesterday - and boy was I unimpressed. It's a sub Shrek "buddy" movie with very little original about it - its only saving grace is Billy Connelly's squirrel which has some moments.

Oh - and when will CGI artists realise that we know that it's difficult to animate fur - but we a know it can be done and are no longer impressed by one character blowing the fur of another - no reason - just showing off as far as I could see.

The kids, on the other hand loved it. So - avoid like the plague - unless you are a ten year old child who finds weeing gags funny!

Hoodwinked - The story about Little red riding hood, the wolf, grandma and the wood cutter. Started off a little slow but once the story got going it was realy quite good. They each had to tell their side of the story and it was good the way each story interacted with the other.

Snakes on a Plane - So bad it was good

Deck the Halls - It had the making of a good film but I think Matthew Broderink and Danny De Vito were not cast right. They just didn`t have that fun factor needed by the characters

Battle Royale - watched it again the other day and my goodness it is an excellent film.

Many are put off by the fact it is Japanese with subtitles but if you can get over that you are in for a treat...albeit a tad violent one.

Basically Japan has had enough of its young people disrespecting their elders and so introduce the BR act...this means that once a year a class of students is sent to an island and they have to kill each other off in order to survive themselves. If they all simply sit there and do nothing a dog collar around their neck will explode and they will all die.

The tension in this film is excellent and the actors all hold their own.

What a complete and utter piece of bollox! It was only saved by the charisma of the lead character who turns out to be an absolute nobody that I'd ever heard of!

Nil By Mouth - a fascinating journey into the underclass (thanks Lucy for suggesting Thomas Dalrypmple - Life at the bottom as the book of the month ages and ages ago).

Ray Winston - most mavelllous and NOT a cor blimey luv-a-duck cockney parody ...for once!!!!

Kathy Burke - fabulous - marvelous portrayal of the best of the underclass - ditto Mo from Eastendes and Frank''s mum from Eastenders - all so well portrayed of hopeless female lives of that ilk.

brilliant film - excellent to watch ... makes us so glad not to be part of that totally ****ty underclass scene for real.

I watched Midnight Cowboy at the weekend.

It's a film I've always wanted to see and I have to say I wondered why when I did finally watch it.

The beginning was good, the end was good, Dustin Hoffman was very good, John Voight was very good, the dialogue was mostly very good, but it was all a bit arty farty and kooky camera angles in the middle bit and I felt this dated the film firmly in the 1960s. I wish I could have got more out of it, and I feel like maybe I missed the point of it.

300 - Gerrard 'phwoar' Butler is King of the Spartans with the body to match. He leads his army of 300 men against a huge Persian army of tens of thousands and kicks some serious bottom. Based on the graphic nopvel by Frank (Sin City) Miller. I loved it.

we've watched quite a few films lately.

Starsky and Hutch - which I think was absolutely hilarious - Ben Stiller was spot on with Starsky's mannerisms - I laughed all the way through, but thought it was a bit sad at the end when the "real" Starsky and Hutch came on - they were old old men and it was sad that that part of my youth couldn't be left where it was!

Also watched Grease as after watching the audition show "Grease is the word" (which, btw, was mediocre) my son said he'd never seen it so we got the video out and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it and was transported back to when I was 17 when I first remember seeing it - although it was sniggeringly hilarious to see how old the students looked - most of 'em looked older than the teachers - and somehow the film works so well. It's one of my favourites.

Last night we watched Casinio Royale as my son got the dvd for Easter. It was a lot better than I remember at the pictures, although I'm not a bond fan I did enjoy it (or was it Daniel Craig I was enjoying?!).
