View Full Version : What's the last film you watched? Coastie 01-11-2004, 07:42 PM Mine was 'Die Another Day' - Just fancied a bit of a Bond fix this afternoon before work! PJ 01-11-2004, 08:12 PM Yesterday I purchased and watched "Dazed & Confused" on DVD. Brilliant film! Makes me wish I was an American teenager growing up in the 70s :D Minklemar 02-11-2004, 01:33 PM I watched 'The Brotherhood of Justice' last night with much younger versions of Keanu Reeves, Keifer Sutherland and Billy Zane. It was ok but I think Keanu kept forgetting which film he was in and thinking it was Bill and Ted!! girl friday 02-11-2004, 10:55 PM Saw Kevin Bacon's new film at the London Film Festival on Saturday which the man himself (and life Kyra Sedgwick) turned up to - highly recommended. Not an easy subject (paedophilia, and life after incarceration) but beautifully acted and shot. On DVD - Moonlight Mile: starring Jake Gyllenhaal (reason I watched it!) and Susan Sarandon and Dustin Hoffman. Superb acting, great dialogue and really touching, without any of the obvious maudling and emotional manipulation so often used. Coastie 06-11-2004, 11:27 AM Went to the cinema twice this week to see: 'Finding Neverland' - staring Jonny Depp and Kate Winslet I have fallen in love with this film. It took me back to my childhood. I have always loved the story of 'Peter Pan' and have seen it portrayed in many forms (some good some bad) and this was the most wonderful film ever for telling the true story as to how J M Barry came up with the concept and executed the story. The visual imagery just sucked me in and if you're at all that way inclined I suggest you take a box of tissues with you as even I had a tear in my eye by the end. A truely wonderful tale and one you must go and see. Scooby 08-11-2004, 01:02 PM The Grudge. It has Sarah Michelle Gellar in it! And Japanese ghosts! It's really very frightening. cheerio! Coastie 08-11-2004, 08:36 PM The Grudge. It has Sarah Michelle Gellar in it! And Japanese ghosts! It's really very frightening. cheerio! I hid behind my hands at the trailer Scoobs so I think I'll be giving this a miss....I am that big a wuss! Dolores 08-11-2004, 08:39 PM I watched Acopolypse Now on Saturday night. I've seen this epic about five times, I never tire of it. It is one of the most perfect films IMHO! ...and Martin Sheen is SO damn sexy! Adzam 15-11-2004, 07:22 PM I saw The Grudge this weekend! It was very good, made me jump a few times but I quite like Horror films in general, I'd actually go as far as to say though, that it was the scariest horror I've seen but I think it could have been because it was at the cinema, I usually watch them on DVD's! Môrph™ 15-11-2004, 07:48 PM I went to see Bridget Jones: The edge of reason, on Saturday Night, great film, even better than the first one  ils 15-11-2004, 08:53 PM Oh good as I am hoping to see it tomorrow! :) Dolores 15-11-2004, 09:30 PM I went to see Bridget Jones: The edge of reason, on Saturday Night, great film, even better than the first one :laugh:My dad watched the first one on tv on Saturday night and he thought it was really funny. I'm sure a lot of blokes would like it if they went to see it, it's not necessarily a "chick flick", it's just a very very funny film! ...didn't like the book at all though. Flip 15-11-2004, 10:06 PM The last one I watched was Bridget Jones part uno [on telly] - I had forgotten how delish Colin Firth was!! I cannot wait to see part deux!! And being a useless movie goer I watched the first Sister Act on tv on Firday [I think] what a splendid film that was!! Bonsai 16-11-2004, 10:10 AM The last one I watched was Bridget Jones part uno [on telly] - I had forgotten how delish Colin Firth was!! I watched this too, and got all sloppy. Just lately i have been glued to the telly watching films, but i cant tell you what most of them were  I saw LoveActually (again) the other day, and Hackers with Angelina Jolie. On sunday we watched Practical Magic with Sandra Bullock which was funny. I think on Sunday i watched 5 films, mostly unheard of ones on Sky - and then yesterday i watched 3 weepies on the Hallmark channel and sobbed my little heart out  Andrea 16-11-2004, 11:44 AM we were watching channel 5 last night, I don't normally watch alot of this channel, but there were loads of adverts for films showing next week. PJ 18-11-2004, 01:20 PM Karen, I saw a trailer for The Manchurian Candidate the other night when I was at the cinema - it looks good. Anyway, my gf dragged me to see the new Bridget Jones movie - I actually thought it was quite funny :ninja: Coastie 20-11-2004, 04:41 PM I enjoyed Bridget Jones 2 more than the first one...I know I am strange! Anyway went and watched 'After The Sunset' staring Pierce Brosnan....basically it's a cross between....The Thomas Crown Affair and Bond with a touch of Entrapment and Indiana Jones.....fantastic fun and well.....lots of Pierce with his top off...PHWOOOOAR  .....and for the guys Salma Hyack (or whatever her name is) wears a bikini/sassy underwear several times during the film so hey it's one for the boys too! This was very funny and I loved it  I think the 1st one was better tho! I saw this last night at the cinema, maybe I wasn't in the right mood but I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the first, maybe because they copied the formula from the first so it wasn't as fresh. Also it is very different from the book. Its sad as I love Bridget, Hugh Grant stole the show though along with Renee [sp?]. sheoque 23-11-2004, 11:17 PM Saw ladies in lavender tonight it was really good. You could almost imagine the written words that were being acted out in the non dialogue scenes where a look speaks a thousand works. It was uncluttered and thoughtful. miriam margoles is the real star. ils 23-11-2004, 11:23 PM I want to see this Sheoque as one of my favourite actresses is in it (Dame Judi Dench).... 'nobody puts baby in the corner'!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx bridge 28-11-2004, 01:01 PM I just watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind last night. I loved it...it's very strange...but amazingly good. Planning to go see Alexander this weekend sometime. When me and my hubby went to see "Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" we were the only two people in the cineama!!! But we really enjoyed it, have you read the book well it's actually the script of the film, it's great! :) dab 29-11-2004, 02:22 PM Firefly. They're making the film - it'll be out next spring, I think - but I recently watched all the episodes of the DVD box set. Ten and a half hours of it over a single weekend. And it's the most wonderful thing I've seen in years. It's a space opera based 500 years in the future, about a bunch of misfits who form the crew of a space freighter trying to stay one step ahead of the law while they crash around the galaxy from one dodgy job to the next. The characters are wonderful - so real you can smell them. The humour is dry and clever. And the references aren't hammered home. They just expect you to pick up on them. Oh, joy! Warning - this is seriously addictive viewing. Coastie 30-11-2004, 08:01 AM Monday: The Incredibles - Great fun...had a guy with an infectious laugh two rows behind as well so the whole cinema (about 20 of us) were in fits of giggles from start to finish! Saturday: Beyond the Sea - came away wanting to burst into song and dance...everyone who left the screening had an extra spring in their step...wonderful; movie...wonderful songs and an incredible performance by Mr. Spacey! :) Bonsai 02-12-2004, 10:07 AM I watched the Green Mile last Sunday, and also Four Weddings and a Funeral. I tell you, that funeral scene in Four Weddings gets me every time  kittyxx 02-12-2004, 04:11 PM ooh i LOVE green mile - it is one of only a few films guarenteed to make me cry! zip 05-12-2004, 04:42 PM Kill Bill volumes 1 and 2; don't see one without the other. Squishy yet satisfying. *Rachel* 05-12-2004, 07:13 PM The last film i went to see was Bridgit Jones diary! It was such a laugh! Me and my friends were in hysterics! even at the "wobbly bits"! hehe! Bonsai 07-12-2004, 11:03 AM I watched 3 Xmas movies on Sunday and totally enjoyed them. 2 were low budget ones on Sky, but good non-the-less. I loved it. I hope that reality TV never gets as bad as that though  Bonsai 09-12-2004, 10:09 AM I saw some of '8 legged freaks' last night about mutant spiders. It was classed as a horror, but i laughed by socks off   Coastie 10-12-2004, 02:20 PM The Land Before Time......I'm still working my way through my taped of the TV video collection and well this was next....I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the tale of Little Foot and Peetwee, Sarah, Spike and the big mouth one.....wonderful! Islandman 11-12-2004, 02:52 PM Wimbledon. I liked it. The director of the movie is one of my faves, so I'm not surprised I liked it. And I found the way they sort of mock some of the current tennis stars to be quite funny. I may just watch it again today. PJ 11-12-2004, 02:57 PM The Land Before Time......I'm still working my way through my taped of the TV video collection and well this was next....I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed the tale of Little Foot and Peetwee, Sarah, Spike and the big mouth one.....wonderful! I love this too! Phantom of the Opera - Saw this yesterday, superb, breath taking, sexy and sad, go see it immediately Lucy 14-12-2004, 12:14 PM Saw "Phantom" with high hopes as I adore the musical. Visual effects were good and I always enjoy watching Miranda Richardson, but the lead actors very wooden I thought, with some horribly twee script added in for no apparent reason. Bella 14-12-2004, 04:43 PM Saw "Phantom" with high hopes as I adore the musical. Visual effects were good and I always enjoy watching Miranda Richardson, but the lead actors very wooden I thought, with some horribly twee script added in for no apparent reason. I will still probably go and see this during the hols. To be honest it just couldn't be as good as the musical. I wonder what will be the next musical to hit the big screens.............Les Miserables, Miss Saigon........it will start-kick a new theme for the movies! It has been ages since I have watched a film - will probably hire a DVD out this weekend, any ideas or recommendations? Coastie 16-12-2004, 09:13 AM Dumbo...... I enjoyed it too! PJ 18-12-2004, 07:49 PM Well, the other night I watched "The Omen", in bed, by myself, in the dark - and yes it scared me! I don't easily get scared but I thought the movie was very spooky. And isn't Mrs Baylock one of the creepiest characters in a movie ever? :ninja: Coastie 18-12-2004, 08:19 PM You are a far...far...braver man than I Peej....I don't watch films like Omen and Rebecca and all that stuff as I have to much imagination and scare myself silly! Dolores 18-12-2004, 11:22 PM I've just watched the talented Mr Ripley. I didn't know what it was about really andI must say I found it totally stunning and I couldn't stop watching it. Watched it too, this is my 2nd time seeing it and it is still a fab film! There is a sort of follow up to it called Ripley's Game with John Malkovich playing Tom Ripley. Haven't seen that yet, is it out to rent yet? We also got Mystic River out on DVD on Fridayn - another fab movie. Sean Penn & Tim Robbins are brilliant in it. Definitely one to see. And Katie went with one of her wee friends to see The Incredibles and absolutely loved it! Critique 20-12-2004, 08:32 PM Well as I put on a different thread cos I lost my way - lol - I went to see Phantom of the Opera. First time I had been to the cinema since I took my grandson to see Godzilla (and I went and asked them to turn it down cos it was hurting my ears - lol). I watched Rosemary's Baby on TV last night for about the 100th time. I think I know the script off by heart but I still can't resist watching it  Bonsai 21-12-2004, 09:01 AM There is a sort of follow up to it called Ripley's Game with John Malkovich playing Tom Ripley. Haven't seen that yet, is it out to rent yet? I saw this on Sky about a month ago, and it is very good - although not as good as The Talented Mr. Ripley. It also stars Dougrey Scott (the guy who was tipped to take over the James Bond role) and he is brilliant in it. Im sure it must be out to rent if Sky are showing it. Isis 21-12-2004, 12:24 PM Secret Window, a Steven King movie - didnt realise what it was about in the shop, and Mr Q asked if I picked it just for a lust fest over Jonny Depp - well I couldnt lie could I?!?!?!? Brilliant movie though - NOT just cos the gorge Jonny is in it!!!! MB - Frosty 21-12-2004, 01:13 PM I watched Raymond Briggs' "The Snowman" the other day. Good film but the snowman part would have been better played by my good self, imo:wink2: Bella 21-12-2004, 03:18 PM Watched Cool Runnings yesterday afternoon, what a fab wee movie that was. It was another sort of feel-good movie made all the better by it being based on what actually happened. John Candy - god rest his soul - was really good as the coach. Really enjoyed this! Isis 21-12-2004, 03:34 PM brilliant movie Bella - mind you, I dont think John Candy ever did a bad one, I love all of his films....another tragic waste! Islandman 22-12-2004, 06:17 PM I saw National Treasure on Sunday. It was better than I'd thought it would be. It had just the right amount of comedy to keep it from seeming too hokey. And I was in the process of reading the Da Vinci Code at the time, and the similar theme made it all the more interesting. Can't wait 'til Da Vinci Code comes out as a movie... Coastie 24-12-2004, 08:58 AM Phantom of the Opera - Monday - fantastic! Kindergaten Cop - Tuesday - Still enjoyable! I thought it was great. My 13 year old found it a bit boring but the rest of us loved it. The effects were great and the whole atmosphere of the film added to the darkness of it. I particularly loved little Sonny. Awwww! Coastie 24-12-2004, 09:14 AM I've seen the trailer several times and I have to say the baby really gives me the creeps! Also I detest Jim Carrey...it is for both these reasons that I shall be avoiding this film! maxine 24-12-2004, 09:26 AM I've seen the trailer several times and I have to say the baby really gives me the creeps! Also I detest Jim Carrey...it is for both these reasons that I shall be avoiding this film! Must admit Jim Carey did spoil it a bit for me because, as usual, he completely over acts. I watched the rest of it this morning, and I agree it is a fab film. Hard to believe it is about 12/13 years ago when it first came out! I watched Bend it like Beckham for the first time the other time when it was on BBC 1. Mr B never fancied this film so it was always a no-no everytime we were at the DVD rental shop. I really enjoyed it though and good to see that some of the stars in it have furthered their careers. Andrea 05-01-2005, 01:05 PM I watched Bend it like Beckham the other night to, have been meaning to see it for a while and quite enjoyed it. Bob 05-01-2005, 09:17 PM I've seen Bend it like Beckham before but watched it again the other night and I found it just as entertaining second time around. I forgot that Adi (from EE) was in it! I've just bought Shawshank redemption DVD, I've seen this before but it is such a great film that I had to see it again, I also just finished reading the book, one of them rarities when the film is as good as the book. I taped Westside story off the TV at the weekend ad I'm saving it for an afternoon free of interruptions so that I can settle down with the choccies and the kleenex. The music makes me cry buckets. Bella 06-01-2005, 09:15 AM Oh Damn!! I meant to tape What Women What! And agreed Bob, Shawshank Redemption is just a wonderful film, even though you know the ending it is a film that I can watch again and again! It was voted as the top film never to have received an oscar. I think it was the same year when Forest Gump got best film and Tom Hanks got best actor - Coastie help me out here?! Coastie 09-01-2005, 08:14 AM Doctor Doolittle - Last evening! I clocked up 247 films last year.......I was obviously pacing myself....... tonee 09-01-2005, 08:00 PM I just saw the Stepford Wives. Andrea 09-01-2005, 10:53 PM I watched Back to the Future II on tv tonight. watched the first one last week. I don't know what it is about these films but whenever they come on tv I always watch them, I think they are brilliant. Islandman 10-01-2005, 04:26 AM Swimming Pool....very bizarre, and can't say I really understood everything about it....but still an interesting movie, I guess. ajjessadams 10-01-2005, 10:04 AM The last movie we saw was "National Treasure". A very good movie, but would someone please tell Hollywood to stop trying to pass Nicholas Cage off as a serious actor?!? I saw this movie too. Quite entertaining but a take off from the Da Vinci Code. Can't wait to see that ruined by Tom Hanks. maxine 11-01-2005, 12:53 PM I watched Chocolat yesterday and, as I knew it would be, it was inferior to the book. It does annoy me when film makers change insignifcant things that were in the book. Like changing the imaginary animal from a squirrel to a kangaroo. And the age of the old woman from 81 to 70. And also the main male character was a priest in the book and a mayor in the film. Plus Johnny Depp was underused and I didn't like Juliet Binoche in the lead role. So, all in all, a bit of a disappointment. dab 11-01-2005, 01:03 PM I watched 50 First Dates again last night. Still lovely. I agree Max, I really enjoyed the book, but I was left a bit confused with the mayor/priest part, there were just too many changes!! I adore Johnny Depp, but wasn't too keen on him in this role. Yes, so for me on the whole I was a tad disappointed too. I have read another of Jo-anne Harris's books Five Quarters of Orange - have you read that? If you enjoyed Chocolat (the book that is), you'll enjoy this one! Skeletoria 11-01-2005, 03:59 PM I bought Napoleon Dynamite from the US the other day and I've got to say it's DEFINATELY in my top 3 films EVER! (I've already watched it six times!) It's the story of a real geeky kid, who tries to impress the cool kids at school by talking about "hunting wolverines in Alaska with his Uncle", drawing pictures of "ligers" (a cross between a lion and a tiger) and practising his swingball skills. It's not a laugh out loud comedy, most of the laughs are from the subtle actions and mannerisms of the cast, but I would definately recommend it if you like slightly random, off the wall films! Coastie 11-01-2005, 07:25 PM Oooo I want to see that Skelly! :cool2: I watched: Awakenings Born on the Forth of July Anatomy of a Crime today....yes I basically did naff all, all day! Skeletoria 12-01-2005, 11:16 AM It's really good Coastie! It appears to be a real love it or hate it film, but those that don't like it tend to be the people who were expecting it to be a "teen-comedy" like American Pie or Scary Movie (both of which I can't stand!) Definately 10 out of 10! Coastie 12-01-2005, 09:30 PM It looks like something I might actually like (I don't like American Pie etc) as it has a certain quirkiness to it..... I watched Patriot Games and Police Academy today! :cool2: Spooky 13-01-2005, 08:21 AM At the flicks it was Polar Express (loved it as much as my rugrats did). I did guess that the staff were ghosts based on their clothing, but the rest of it was a bit of a shocker - i didnt see THAT coming!!!! I wont go in to anymore details as I dont want to spoil it if you havent seen it! Juliette Binoche is yummy! I watched "Bend It Like Beckham" over the hols and thoroughly enjoyed it. We went to see "The House Of Flying Daggers" yesterday. The characterisation was weak and the plot got wildly implausible at times. But it was absolutely beautiful to look at - great costumes, great landscapes, interesting colour themes and the most beautifully choreographed fight sequences. The worst one that springs to mind is the movie adaptation of "It" - a brilliant movie until the end with the "spider" - the movie didn't quite capture this like the book did, which is a shame. The best movie adaptation of a Stephen King book is "Misery" IMO. HushTheVoices 19-01-2005, 06:55 PM Shark's Tale - 3/5 While the plot was ok and some of the voice acting was excellent, I simply didn't care about the Will Smith (Oscar) character. It had potential to be a great movie, given the great story it was based off of, but it just didn't build the story very well. I felt it lacked any real emotion. I think what happens with these "epic" movies is that they try to put so much into it that it affects the telling of the story and doesn't allow you to get attached to many of the characters. And I must say, Brad Pitt's acting was not the greatest, some of the scenes appeared so robotic and methodical. bleh. It was sort of exciting to watch tho, as I played Hector in a play once a while back, so knew the basic story, and so found that character particularly interesting. ils 01-02-2005, 08:03 PM I watched Moulin Rouge on Sunday. it was a fabulous film. I really do not believe it was rigged. I have suspicions about the first time he was elected, but am pretty sure he won fair and square the second time around...unfortunately. I feel the reason Bush won was because of the religious issues brought up in this election...which brought out more Republicans to vote for Bush....and the fact that the war of sorts in Iraq is going on usually means the current president will return again as happens during most times of war. I liked Farenheit 9/11...but think some of it was a bit far-fetched...which I hate to say because I can't stand Bush in the least. Makes me wish I was an American teenager growing up in the 70s :D It's a great movie isn't it? - The same director came up with another similar movie but it was based around the lives of a group of suburbanite teens who've lost their way somewhat. It's called Suburbia (you may already have seen it) and it stars two of the cast members of D&C. Those being the actor who plays "Clint", and also Parker Posey who played the chief hazer - "wipe that face off your head b**ch!...." (that one) And the brother of the fluffy red-haired girl also stars as the leading character. Not as good as D&C but well worth a watch. Isis 05-02-2005, 08:28 AM What did Marlon think though? They shreiked and laughed, and were rude when we asked them to be quiet. They even had to cheek to start texting each other!! The manager came and threw them out and the cheeky mares demanded their money back!!! What is the point eh? Great acting, great script, great story. great camera work ...... so different from Ocean's 12 viewed earlier today! I loved all the old fashioned stuff in the film. Such as: Dustin Hoffman smoking all the time even in lifts and strangers' houses! No mobile phones. Taking down notes verbatim with pens and paper! Typing up their notes on typewriters. Sometimes we forget how recent all the stuff we take for granted is such as mobile phones, palm tops, computers etc. it's nice to remember simpler times every so often! Dog solidiers was wierd about an exercise where some soiliers do a patrol in a wood and it turns out they are bait for a team trying to catch the werewolfs that are roaming about scotland. The other film was based on a true story in minissota, usa about a kidnap and several murders, with a pregnant copper and everyone kept saying Yar instead of yes which really got on my t*ts. But apparently its because they originally came from denmark in that area. The film was terrible. It was my bossy's choice of films and we've politely told him that next time we will choose. The other film you refer to is called "Fargo" by the Coen brothers. I first saw it along with the rest of my design group at Uni - it was being shown as part of a repertory season at the cinema (independent films) I didn't think much of it myself either, but I later discovered it was intended as a tongue-in-cheek dark comedy. (maybe that was lost on me as I had been holding my then g/f's hand for the very first time in there, throughout the length of the film - so probably my mind was on other things...) I seen it at the cinema before but really enjoyed it again. We are going to get a DVD tonight either The Bourne Supremecy or Collateral. My sister gave The Day After Tomorrow but it isn't high on my list to watch! Took the kids to see The Magic Roundabout, I wasn't that impressed. Robbie Williams as Dougal really annoyed me, he has the most irratating voice!! Katie loved Dylan the Rabbit as he kept saying "man" all the time and she thought he was really coooool! We were at two art galleries this afternoon and at every painting Katie kept saying cool and Abbie copied soon after. So every gallery we went into the two girls kept saying cool, can't imagine what the other art lovers thought of them! Coastie 19-02-2005, 03:44 PM Ooo go for Collateral...def better than the Bourne Supremacy...in fact one of my 3 films of 2004! My sis and I were discussing it and she reckons that it just was'nt my kind of film. She is the manager at a small independent picture house so she gets a great variety of films in. I have to say that it doesn't improve with each viewing though, in fact, it gets a little bit less riveting each time I watch, but each time I hope I can recapture that first time I watched it when I was totally enthralled. Not something that has every happened with for example: The Godfather I and II, Jaws or One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. .... a true sign of a masterpiece is something that can be viewed, listened to or read time and time again and each time you get a little bit more out of it. Very moody film, and when they're done well, moody films are okay. Reminded me a little of Less Than Zero (...little of Less?? - it' don't sound right!) with Robert Downey Jr. (never to be confused with Harry Connick Jr. - a mistake i always make.....) ....and i just loved the "chopstick's and ice cube" scene.....very classy...very classy indeed.... It's a comedy about these two folks who get out of a mental ward of sorts and get their own apartment. At first they are afraid to even answer the phone or leave the apartment, but they slowly learn to go out and function in the world. I'd definitely recommend it.
