View Full Version : IQ test
Figaro 15-07-2006, 07:01 PM Fancy a go at an online IQ test.
I did this one and got 129 - which was pretty darned flattering I have to say! Apparently, that score puts me in the 96th percentile (although I assume that is the score out of those people who did the test - not globally, or nationally). The last IQ test I didd was a professional one and I got a score of 126.

Oooohhh ark at you, are you an official Mensa Muppet?:D :p
survivorfan 16-07-2006, 04:29 PM Bet you only did this thread so that you could tell everyone how clever you are.
Patsy 16-07-2006, 07:15 PM And why not?! I did a Mensa test at home once and was very strict with myself. I must say, I did rather well. It was about 10 years ago, though. I'm sure if I did this one, I wouldn't be publishing the results this time round.

Thanks for the links.
I did the test you've posted a while back. I can't remember what my score was at the time, but looking through the test again I can still remember a lot of the questions. It would give me an unfair advantage if I did again now.
Patsy 16-07-2006, 07:47 PM Did you pay the $9.95 Figs? I've just done it, but really don't feel I need to pay to be told I'm a genius. ;)
survivorfan 16-07-2006, 07:47 PM The thing is, you do a test, get a measurement, - then what?
Having a high IQ shows you are good at IQ tests, it might give an indication that you are academically bright (although I'm not sure that necessarily follows).
But it doesn't follow that it makes you any better to deal with life - work, reltaionships etc. In fact there is the view that people who are in the very top percentiles- of IQ ratings or degree results- don't make for good employees as there's a good chance they aren't the type to work effectively in a team.
I'm also under the impression that Mensa sees itself as an elitist group, slightly disturbing parallels with the Nazi idea of a super-race come to mind!

Yeah.
I did the test without realising that you had to pay for it until the end. After answering all the questions, I couldn't bear to just close down without knowing what my score was. Cal me wild and reckless, but I felt it was worth the fiver.
Patsy 16-07-2006, 07:54 PM If you come across one that's free, please let me know. I really couldn't justify it (plus my husband will see the statement!).

Hello again Figaro,
I don't know how much you are into doing the odd test or so, the beauty about the tickle pages is that they don't just do IQ tests, you can go from the outragiously silly tests to matters more serious. All of them give you info as to your performance and an optional report.
I have to agree with Survivorfan here mind they don't actually prove anything. But they can be fun.
I like prize crosswords and playing millionaire online just as much.

Northern Angel has posted a link to a freebie IQ test with tickle. Its her post about 3 or 4 posts back.
I've done that test before and I think its quite good, but as I can still remember a lot of the questions on it its not worth me doing it again (a prior knowledge of the questions and some of the answers would skew the results in my favour).
Give that one a go.

Hello Patsy,
If you like them the tickle test is free. You don't have to get the report. You will get your score but not the in depth analysis.
uk.tickle.com/test/iq/start.html
All you do is register with your email address and a user name and password.
This is much more fun to do, even though it takes a while to load up. www.millionaire.itv.com

You're right SF. In fact it's thought that EQ is more important than IQ.

I agree with a lot of what you say. IQ tests just measure a persons ability to perform intellectual tasks in a mechanical way, such as solving verbal and mathematical problems. But such tests don't measure life skills like common sense, empathy, sociability and ability to relate to others.
Personally, I do these things from time to time partly because I find them fun, but also because it is interesting to see how my IQ scores have changed over time.
As to Mensa membership I wouldn't be eligible to join, but I don't think it would be attractive to me even if I were. I don't know if I'd liken it to a Nazi superace though. Its more that joining such a club seems a bit..............conceited (sorry Secrets, just my view).

Out of interest Figaro, does age get factored into your result, and have you found that your rating has gone up or down over time? WOuld you say that - let's call it 'developing' as you get older (away from the academic into the mainstream of life) - helps or hinders the ability to do an IQ test?
Bonsai 16-07-2006, 08:54 PM My IQ was 120 .... is that ****e ?
120 is good I think... can't really remember, not done an IQ test for a while... (well I did the one Figaro suggested, but would refuse to pay for a result)...
When test the nation did IQ tests, I think they did two, I got 114 and 128 if I remember correctly... which I think is great.
And it's correct- I may be doing a degree in maths, but I've got no common sense! And I'm quite shy with most people, a lot more shy than most I work with. That's one reason I've started to work in a pub, hopefully it will give me more confidence and chatability in general!
tigger 16-07-2006, 09:28 PM I just took the tickle test and scored 135 and my husband took it and scored 131.
What was interesting was how each of us worked it out. Whilst I looked at the sequences and figured out the answer by reason, he took the time to work it out in his head. The same with the visual. I just looked at what seemed to me to be the logical solution, whilst he was looking horizontally, diagonally and vertically. I've read that people work out solutions differently according to which side of their brain they use. I guess we work on opposite sides.
msgirl 16-07-2006, 09:28 PM I have a very high IQ but it doesn't make me any better than the next person. In fact it's a hindrance in that NO ONE will play Trivial Pursuit with me, but I am called upon for tidbits of info from time to time. I was tested by a professional as well as my son.
msgirl 16-07-2006, 09:30 PM tigg, are one of you left handed and the other right handed??
tigger 16-07-2006, 09:31 PM Yep, I'm a rightie and he's a leftie.

WOuld you say that - let's call it 'developing' as you get older (away from the academic into the mainstream of life) - helps or hinders the ability to do an IQ test?
I'm not sure that age does get factored into the result, but I have found that my scores have differed somewhat over time. And I do think it is to do with my life development. The scores themselves don't differ greatly, but as my life changes, I score higher on areas where I wasn't previously strong and vice versa. Usually this happens when my life forces me to use skills which I hadn't used to a great extent previously.
For example, when studying, I used to get high scores on things like mathmatical problems and identifying sequences, but lower scores on verbal reasoning.
Once I started working as part of a team my verbal reasoning scores improved, but I got lower scores on other areas, especially recognising visual sequences. I hate those questions now.
Because of that I'd be inclined to think that you can "train" yourself to do well on IQ tests. If spent more of my spare time fannying around with sequences, I'd probably have a higher IQ score.
I'd rather have a life though, if you know what I mean.
There's a game out for the nintendo DS (don't have one...) called Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training. It's probably quite expensive at the moment, but will drop in price. It's just a game of little IQ test-like activities to keep the brain ticking over. Never played it but it recommends 5-10 minutes a day to keep your brain going smoothly. Think something like that could be excellent for a young child if they can be convinced to play it fairly frequently!
Bonsai 17-07-2006, 12:42 PM The average IQ is by definition 100; scores above 100 indicate a higher than average IQ and scores below 100 indicate a lower that average IQ
Ive just read the above. So my score of 120 isnt too bad :applause:
MariaRob 17-07-2006, 01:55 PM Do you have to pay? I just did the quiz (and did quite well I hasten to brag) and it said I had to purchase for $9.95!!! Buggar that for a game of soliders!

please excuse me today am suffering from sarcastic PMT ravings.
bridge 17-07-2006, 03:26 PM My score was so high it did'nt even register, Einstein eat your heart out.
(whistles)
I did an IQ test about 5 years ago - it was to kinda prove a point as my ex said he was told he had an IQ of 360 odd as a child, that he was tested because his mum was a special needs teacher, or some bs like that, so I told him that if he had an IQ of over 300 he would be in a padded cell.........:w00t:
Soooooo we both did the IQ test online, I scored 136 and I am a "problem solver" type, it said something about my mathematical ability which made me chuckle cos I didnt pass my Maths O Level till I was 28 and had been working as a Senior Finance Assistant for some years, I then did AAT......
the Ex's IQ score, I dunno - he gave up half way through saying it was stupid!!!
I havent bothered even attempting this time, the brain is frazzled from the morphine and diazepam  and I cant be assed:angel_not
I did the one that Maureen put up (yes, I'm stingy too) and I got a score of 133. Quite pleased with that actually.
Tigereye 24-07-2006, 11:31 AM FEK - I only got 129. Must be the heat ::whistling:
went down the answers and got a couple of silly ones wrong......:wallbash:
Apparantly I am a 'Word Warrier' type.
Sure Urk could have told yez that.......:w00t:
Coastie 24-07-2006, 01:53 PM I'm going to wait until I have a quiet night watch before I have another crack at this...I keep getting interrupted by people in distress...they are so inconsiderate! :evilmad:
