More and more British men are getting internet or "mail order" brides from overseas. Is this healthy (either for them, or the brides, or for our society in general)? What's wrong with British women (and why don't large numbes of British women do the same thing and pick up Thai toyboys)?

Would you consider it embarrassing if a friend or relation got themselves a Thai bride?

In this global market we have, we import a lot of merchandise from the far east, so I suppose there's no reason to exclude brides from that.

Mind you, I hear that some British men use the internet to find a home-grown woman of the English rose variety, some are even stingy enough to avoid paying an agency fee and trawl chat sites till they find someone suitable for free. Anyone know of an example?

Hello Mikado,

Thai brides. A friend of mine has been married for ten years now to a Thai bride.

We that is my circle of friends, in the days prior to him going abroad to meet up with the many prospective wives through a foreign agency would rile him.
He did take it all in good humour, such is the nature of him being a good sport.

What was curious about his reasons for choosing a Thai bride, is that he felt he was forever being spoken down to, disrespected by assertive and augumentative white women. So therefore he'd rather have himself a wife who would literally love, honour and obey.

We don't rile him anymore as he and his Thai wife have made the marriage work, they also have two beautiful children and on one of many conversations with the wife, they really do enjoy each others company and they have few arguments.

So there you go. They can work.

It will never work the opposite way, British women taking on a Thai toyboy, could well find out the chap desires to become a lady boy. OOps.

I just saw a show on the Discovery Channel a few nights back about the American Men/Russian Brides thing. I really thought that was over! But these are very well off men, middle aged (50-ish), and they spend obscene amounts of money to go over and 'court' these women who want to get OUTTA Russia. It's really sad. The Thai Bride thing...can't help but think of "Little Britain" and Ting Tong and whats-hisface!!:pimp:

I have no strong feeling about it either wy, as long as both parties are happy.

Plenty of middle aged wealthy businessmen have mch younger brides who see the wealth as part of the attraction of the man. It doesn't much matter what part of the world they come from.

Ah but look at what happened at poor old Fled Elliot and Orchid.

I saw an old balding fat man with a beautiful young Thai lady the other day. They were holding hands and looking in a jewellers window and big shiny diamonds.

It did make me smile. I mean, did he honestly think she fancied him ? I really doubt she did, or maybe im doing her an injustice.

I know he perhaps wanted someone to care for him / love him, and she needed security and love - but to me its just kinda sad.

Myforeignbrides .com offers marriage-minded ladies from all over the world.

As an experiment I chose Andorra.

I guess one thing you might have problems with is the language barrier, try Sabrina's translate button.

Oh, just noticed my link throws you in the site at random, never mind, you're sure to find a gem or two.

No, no, when I said I chose Andorra I meant I picked the Andorra page, not a woman called Andorra.

ok...I thought you were just 'investigating' the internet bride thing ANYWAY, not choosing one...lest you come up missing when the MRS. found out...just a very funny misinterpretation...

Then on a whim I Googled Ms Akim and found this. http://alex.ais.fraunhofer.de/zeno/forum;jsessionid=6FA33191FACFF6647862DBBF180EFD67? action=editArticle&id=17669&view=newWindow

Great find SF!

Mike says:
"Maria has brought things into my life that I have always searched for."

I wonder what he's always been searching for?
50% of $24million?

Mikes says:
"I have realized that she is honest, trughful, sincere,"

So Maria is a bank manager trying to syphon off dead customers money. A honest gal for sure.

SF - As SO's top investigative journalist I think it's your duty to warn Mike about Maria. Please track him down asap.

If he met her via her internet scam it's his own business, but if as he says he met her through the dating site he might be totally unaware of it.

I have already written to the site, and asked them to pass on a warning to him. (I really have).

Do you think I'm being over-protective of Mike, or did I do the right thing as a concerned citizen?

I always feel obliged to respond to these "I have a billion dollars I want to share with you" emails with quite a bit of enthusiasm (and a fake bank account number and whatever else they want).

I figure if we all did that, it would stop as they couldn't differentiate the people who fell for it from all the fake responses (but curiously, I never hear back from them..you know, like please confirm your bank number or anything else to acknowledge my response).

Internet mail order bride businesses are infested with an overabundance of scammers. You may find this website of interest: http://www.419eater.com/. I already used their tips to scambait and waste one spammers time. Strung him out for a while. It was fun. Honest.

Yes, I agree it would make it more difficult for them, but I think it needs to be more subtle. I think that's why you don't get any response. Don't reply with bank details straight away, but instead ask a couple of questions and say you're interested if they can provide a bit more info.

That'll get them.

Noted!

I will practice eager constraint next time. I haven't had one for a while now though, maybe I've been removed from their database as a timewaster !
