Groucho 06-09-2006, 06:00 PM If, as looks likely, President Tony is forced to resign over the next few days, is it right that England should exist as a colony of Scotland with an undemocratically elected Scottish Prime Minister, representing a Scottish constituency?
Personally, I have a huge problem with the whole West Lothian issue!

you see this is where I kind of go all Homer-ish and say "derr?" ... can you put me down for the two minute racist argument please, Groucho?
floopy 06-09-2006, 06:16 PM Isn't Tony scottish anyhow?
Bella 06-09-2006, 06:36 PM I don't know if Tony is Scottish or not but he did attend a Scottish fee-paying school - Fettes.
MR B has said along that Gordon Brown would never sit comfortably as Prime Minister and the reason being that he is Scottish and that Scotland has it's own parliament. Maybe GB could take over from Jack McConnell who is a bit of a patronising git! Should it really matter if GB is Scottish or Welsh though as long he gets the job done?
Also lined up in the frame is another scot John Reid, god forbid he becomes Prime Minister and if all else fails there is always John Prescott! :w00t:
What's the West Lothian issue, Groucho? Dare I admit it but that where my roots started, although I am glad to say that I succeeded in my bid for freedom!

Ah you were brought up in lovely Armadale weren't you? I think it's a lovely wee town...
Bella, I was driving through it the other day and all that was going through my head was "duelling banjos" from the movie 'Deliverence'!
Not as bad as Galashiels though.
Groucho 06-09-2006, 09:14 PM What's the West Lothian issue, Groucho?
Basically that Scottish MPs can vote at Westminster on purely English issues, whereas English MPs have no vote in the Scottish Parliament.
Andrea 06-09-2006, 09:34 PM And am I getting this right that in the last election, if the Scottish votes were taken out of the equation, Blair wouldn't have got into office?
Patsy 06-09-2006, 09:44 PM Are we allowed to be overtly racist generally here? Or is it purely to discuss Groucho's anti Scottish MP rant?

Peej, that is an overtly racist remark against my fellow Appalacian Americans!! I just wanted to let you know that you have succeeded in the thread...:applause:
(and I know you don't include me in that ORR!!...I'd HATE to bring up Cumbernauld!!:wink_kiss )

Labour have a parliamentary majority in England, although the Conservative had more votes.
The way the constituencies are carved up plays into Labours hands as they are weighted towards the big cities, whereas the Tories are strong out in the country.

My God PJ, you summed it perfectly but Armadale does need to go along way to beat Galashiels! :ninja: That is one scary inter-breeding village!
Scotland is very much a Labour country although I think with a lot of migrating English bringing their wealth up here it is slowly turning into a Tory one.
Re the West Lothian Issues, I am with the English here and it's easy to understand why they are so aggrieved - re the smoking ban the English MPs had no say in the Scottish decision but the Scottish MPs had a say in the English one. Yes so understandably people get the hump!
It is all rather confusing though with all these different parliaments especially when they are all singing from different songsheets.
So what is the general feeling among us if Brown got the nod to be the PM?
Groucho 07-09-2006, 07:03 AM So what is the general feeling among us if Brown got the nod to be the PM?
Very, very bad for anyone with even a hint of wealth.
Bad for the economy.
floopy 07-09-2006, 07:19 AM I don't have any wealth :)
I like GB, I think he's earnt the right to have a shot at the big time. Not sure he's charismatic enough to be a PM, but that remains to be seen.
Groucho 07-09-2006, 07:41 AM I disagree.
I think he has lied and cheated and stolen from the British public over the last 9 years and completely wasted the money he has pilfered.
floopy 07-09-2006, 07:43 AM Well that's more or less my personal style of finacial management, so I don't have a problem with that
Patsy 07-09-2006, 09:03 AM I can't stand the people at my local chinese takeaway because they don't open on Sundays.

Are they Scottish and attempting a sub-military coup to wrestle away control of the country from the democratically elected incumbent?
No, thought not.......wrong thread :glare:
floopy 07-09-2006, 09:35 AM Oh, grouch, you're just sour cos Maggie's retired.
Move on.
Patsy 07-09-2006, 09:36 AM Are you glaring at me? This is, is it not, the "overtly racist thread"? I was on-topic, so what's your problem fish face?

I would refer the dishonourable member to the first post, which usually explains the flavour of the sometimes ambiguous titles.
Patsy 07-09-2006, 09:49 AM Well, as far as I know my local Chinese take-away isn't being taken over by any Scottish people. Thank goodness!
Is that better?
Fee For All 07-09-2006, 10:29 AM I'm feeling harrassed, bullied and stereotyped
