I was reading an article this morning about sex on TV and how long it will be before one of the TV channels shows a couple having full on sex in all its technicolour.

It mentioned how swearing used to be frowned upon on TV, whereas now its common place. Apparently it was a man in the 50's who said the F*** word first on TV. Everyone was stunned into silence whilst the producers listened for the reaction from the audience. The reaction wasnt toooooo bad, and so swearing became more and more common place so now we dont even bat an eyelid if someone swears repeatedly on TV.

So, when will the same happen with sex ? Again it mentioned in the article that TV companies are hoping it will happen, but can deny all responsibility. For example, they try and let it happen on shows like BB or IAC (peter and jordan) so that if the couple do have full on sex, then they can deny that they made it happen, as it was someone remote from them who did the act and put it on TV (does that make sense :unsure: ). Although sex 'might' have happened on BB under the kitchen table this year - noone actually saw them in the act.

But when will it happen, and what will our reaction be ? There is a program on TV called the Sex Inspectors and they analyse a couples sex life and diagnose where they are going wrong. I saw about 10 mins of this last week ... but got bored as the presenters were so dreadful, and the program so boring. They didnt show full on sex, just a glimpse from the back end (so to speak).

So - how will we / you react ? Would you welcome the freedom that comes with everything being out in the open, or will it appall and disgust you ? Would you rather things stayed as they are ?

I have to say that sex on TV quite frankly bores me. I mean, if you watch a hollywood film it is so perfectly synchronised that their shirt buttons dont get stuck in their hair, and their knickers come off without them having to reach down and show their cellulite. Their makeup never runs off their faces with sweat, and they are perfect in every which way. It isnt real. Watching Hollywood sex makes me feel somewhat inferior.

I wouldnt say im a prude, but i would have to say that i believe some things do belong behind closed doors. If you wish to hire / purchase a porn movie then thats your perogative, and people who dont want to watch the 'film' dont have to. But if it becomes the norm on mainstream TV i think i will feel a mite dissapointed.

IMO sex is not a spectator sport it takes real talent and creativity to allude to staeming passion and it is no longer a skill anyone seems to have. There is no real creative barrier pushing with actual sex, just the obvious. Sex is a private act between one or more persons and porn is porn and has its place. I don't like the blurring of definition in these circumstances.

I don't especially want to see folk huffing and puffing around on TV for the sake of it either, it's rarely pretty and generally adds very little to the storyline or plot.

Watching full sex on TV would make for a very boring 3 minutes of television IMO :wink2:

I wouldn't find it exciting (watching people acting out a sexual act doesn't do it for me) but equally I wouldn't find it objectionable either. However I would question whether it would actually add anything to the story...

I don't mind the sex - it's all the lip smacking kissing that turns my stomach!! :sick: very unnecessary to exchange all that saliva on tv! :unsure:

I think it's possible to portray sex either on films or in books, and manage to convey the emotion -whether it is passion, tenderness, freneticness, power, domination or whatever, even love, -but that it takes much skill to do so. The scenes in 'the english patient' do that, but your average hollywood kidmanesque bonkbuster invariable doesn't.

Generally the more gratuitous and graphic, the less skill is involved.

I prefer it when they leave a bit to the imagination, so I hope it doesn't become the norm on mainstream TV.

Like Bonnie said, what we consider to be the norm regarding certain behaviours on TV, would have been very risque less than a generation ago. I remember Johnny Rotten mouthing off on some American chat show and it was headline news the next day. On the last IAC he used the worst swear words he could think of, as did everyone else and it wasn't even bleeped after the watershed.

I think we just gradually become immune to sexual activity on our screens. It's drip fed to us so slowly that we don't even notice it happening and thus it's no longer shocking.

Have this conversation with your children in twenty years time, and they'll be saying you're an old fuddy duddy because three in a bed bi-sexual romps will be common place even on Neighbours.

I think Sex on TV is quite sexy (but not full on porno sex- I don't like pornography one bit).. but I have one rule for me and another for my husband. Women are always the ones that are naked, and because they always look so perfect it makes me feel inferior. I don't mean their bodies so much, I mean their breasts cause mine are small :sad: unfortunately!!! So I feel insecure if my husband see's sex on TV... Pathetic I know. ..

Anyway my views on Live sex on tv... I don't think we need it and LUCKILY we have the option to change chanels if we want to so nothing is really forced upon us.

I dont totally understand your question, but the whole article was written whilst the 'sex inspectors' was on TV (i dont know if it still is) because they were showing a couple having sex on telly, but were doing it from obscure angles so not 'everything' was shown.

But then it raised the teen Big Brother thing were the 16 year olds had sex under a duvet on national TV.

I don't think I want full on sex aired on the TV - I have absolutely no desire to watch someone else writhing around, moaning & groaning while I'm doing the ironing or scoffing some chocolate - it would put me right off!

For those that wish to watch that sort of thing, there are enough porn films to rent or channels on Sky or whatever.

I object to paying my licence fee for the drivel already available without adding more to it.
