:applause: Very good.

But that's b0llocks too imo.

I don't agree with these "special days". If you don't love your Mum & Dad enough to show them on a regular basis, then a naff card and box of Quality Street won't really cut the mustard. And if you do show your appreciation to your parents, then what is the point of the special day.

I'd boycott it if I had the guts. Mum'd be offended though......

I always get my mum a little something, but she would be annoyed at me if i spent too much.

So i got her a nice pretty bag thingie from the card shop (which was free with the card) and inside i put a card, a box of Thorntons choccies and a fluffy teddy bear (cos she loves cuddly toys).

Mr.B had to drop it off to her as i wont be seeing her on Sunday - but she was ordered not to peek in the bag until Sunday morning.

I don't know how many more mother's days we'll be celebrating so we will be taking the auld bat out for lunch on sunday and I've ordered her a huge cactus [she's odd] from the local plant shop which should be in on Thursday....

make a fuss of them you lazy gits, you'll be sorry when they're gone.

So, I guess you buy into the whole Mothers Day thing.

Like I said, I will buy something for Mothers Day because Mum would be hugely offended to be the only mother in her circle of friends not have gotten anything, but I will do it under duress.

I do heaps of things in my day to day life which show Mum how much I love and appreciate her. I don't mind the principle of buying my Mum a gift or taking her out to lunch as I do that quite a lot generally, but I hate that the Marketing guys out there have invented a "day" where we are supposedly obliged to do it. Apart from anything else, the moment a particular date is given some sort of significance, the price of eveything shoots up. Have you seen the price of a decent bunch of flowers this week? Twice the price that they are normally. And Mum's local pub has got a special "Mothers Day" menu which is, surprise surprise, more expensive than the usual Sunday Lunch.

Bah humbug. I really would boycott it if I had the guts, not 'cos I don't value my Mum, but because I hate being one of the millions getting suckered by the card and flower companies.

Lordy don't let your mum know that - she'd be mortified!

She sort of knows how I feel about Mothers Day, and claims to agree with me, but still I know she'd be a bit miffed if I didn't actually get her anything.

I don't think this is a recent thing invented by the marketing guys (like Fathers' Day is) - isn't it an old church/religious calendar event (Mothering Sunday)?

Hmm - you may be right.

Time to google.

A quick google proves you to be correct SF.

Mothers Day origined back in Ancient Greeks times, when people used the date to honour Rhea - the mother of the Gods. The in early Christian times the celebration was plaguarised to honour the Mother of Christ, and the date was set as being the 4th Sunday in Lent. In the 17th Century, Religious orders changed to celebrate all Mothers and its stuck ever since.

Fair enough. But I still don't like the way that the Marketing guys have latched onto it and turned it into a huge commercial exercise.

Not got a huge issue with Mother/Fathers Day and the sending of cards etc, although I have to admit I much preferred when the boys were little and at playschool and brought home the cards they made in school to the ones you buy in the shops.

HOWEVER......I do have a massive issue with the cards that say "To my Nanny on Mothers Day" or "To the best Auntie on Mothers DAy" eh???

WTF is that all about? It's MOTHERS DAY!!

Yeah, but I think I get it - maybe the grandkids want to send Grandma a card to meke her feel nice, maybe auntie doesn't have kids but has been like a second mum - come on buzz there must be bigger things to have a massive issue with (erm ... like the colours Haydon has used for the website)

Oh Figaro for Jiminy's sake, buy her a cheap card and some daffs from Tesco then it'll be over for another year.

Oh I will, for the sake of Mum's feelings. I just don't like it. In much the same way as I don't like the commercial aspect of Christmas, yet still indulge in it to some extent for the sake of appearance (and because I want to get something back).

Just don't buy one.

I can understand how someone might feel bad about not getting their Mum a card on Mothers Day as the mother would expect it, but surely a Grandma doesn't really expect a card from her grandchildren on Mothers Day.

Just don't buy the card. If he damn things don't sell, the manufacturers will stop making them.
