Are you to the west of me? ils 17-12-2004, 11:31 AM It's very windy here in West Sussex - I was nearly blown down my drive just walking to the car! It is a nice wind though - when I got in the car, it blew the door shut for me  Coastie 17-12-2004, 04:44 PM Dab....I'm in the Solent so I'm east of you! ILS.....I'm glad my sprouty puffs served a purpose! dab 17-12-2004, 05:13 PM Dab....I'm in the Solent so I'm east of you! Ah. Your gale bypassed me, then. That was nice of it. I spent some time in Pompey when I was in the navy. Southsea Beach, Joanna's and Martha's... I remember them well. Well, but not clearly. Coastie 17-12-2004, 05:41 PM Joanna's...eeeewwwwwww...I'm amazed your not still stuck to the floor to this day....did you stroll along the promanade...I took a few of the SOMBA crew along there once! I used to run that prom every morning before work - not nice in the winter with a hangover  I, too, barely survived! ils 17-12-2004, 11:34 PM Joanna's...eeeewwwwwww...I'm amazed your not still stuck to the floor to this day....did you stroll along the promanade...I took a few of the SOMBA crew along there once! My next door neighbour Muriel, who was in her 90's, died very suddenly a couple of weeks ago. She was unmarried and had no kids, but she did have a neice who was her closest living relative. The neice moved into her house and has been sorting out her stuff and making arrangements for the funeral etc. Anyway, yesterday afternoon I got home from Town to find a little pile of Christmas cards from various neighbours on the doormat. The last one I opened was from Muriel.... She'd obviously written out all her cards before she died, and her neice (having found them) has been sending them on to the recipients. It was a bit of a shock to read the card, and more than a little bit sad. I felt like crying  Cat 19-12-2004, 03:37 PM Thats such a sad, but lovely story Karenh. I would give the card pride of place and keep it safe for ever. I have to report today that I have coped with my hangover using all my courage and determination. I have ironed, wrapped all gifts, ironed, prepared lunch, cleared up, watched a film, kept a cheerfull disposition and am now cooking a full roast. End of report. Flip 19-12-2004, 06:00 PM Awww Karen  Muriel was a good old age - and I hope her life was happy and her going wasn't too painridden? What an organised lady she was having all her cards sorted - I know it must have been a bit of a shock or weird feeling, but she is probably up there smiling and thinking 'Thank Goodness' N. [neice] managed to post my cards!:) ils 19-12-2004, 06:36 PM What a lovely story Karen..... It snowed in Cardiff last night but it was all gone this morning except a little still left on the hills............. Andrea 19-12-2004, 10:03 PM well today I am so proud of myself, I managed to turn up some curtains. I have never done this before, and my little sewing machine wasn't working, so I'd bought some of that glue stuff to stick them together. Well, on testing a patch of curtain, it was going to show. So I managed to get my maching working, unpicked all the lining, hemmed the lining up first, and I've pinned and ironed the curtain side ready to sew, but I need to go and get some matching thread. But it looks ever so professional even though I do say so myself So that is my job tomorrow, and I will give myself a big pat on the back. I think even hubby was impressed. Sylvia in Stilettoes 20-12-2004, 12:02 AM Today I said 'thank you' to the cash dispenser. Dolores 20-12-2004, 06:39 AM I've got my works lunch today and I plan to stay sober. My boss who upset me greatly last week and who I upset greatly on Friday by straight talking to him has decided at the last moment to take this week off, which is a great relief to me and so I can enjoy the run up to Christmas without constant criticism and having my self esteem lowered on an hourly basis! yippeeeee! ......now if only he could eat too much Christmas pud and fortified wine and then go for a jog my Christmas week would be complete! Cat I think the one you will have seen is the one filmed by the BBC in Stockton?? I saw this early this morning and again on the BBC 24 News I was on the Tyne Tees news - in Northumberland. The North Tyne hunt - does not have a red jacket - they are a relatively small hunt, without the trimmings of larger and more wealthy hunts, they are just farmers, builders, wagon drivers, Mums, kids, nurses and my nephews g/f and her mate who just go for a flirt!!! Incidently anyone know if stocks and shares ISA is a good idea at the moment given the crisis in the indian ocean, I know markets were affected by 9/11An equity ISA is a great idea Bob if you're prepared to invest over a longer term, due to the tax free element. You need to do some research to decide where you want to invest, but Eastern European markets have been heavily sold off recently due to the Yukos crisis and are well worth considering. The Asian Tsunami is unlikey to effect stock markets that greatly, although perversely, it will probably be good for some Asian companies in the construction sector. Personally, I'd always be happy to invest in anything with exposure to China or India, as there is massive economic growth going on there at the moment and for the next 20/30 years. I wouldn't recommend Gilts at the moment as returns on fixed income Government securities are likely to under-perform in the medium term as they have hugely out-performed in the last couple of years. Bob 18-01-2005, 10:00 PM Well this is more tragic than interesting. I posted about my TV ariel blowing off in another thread. Well the man who was supposed to do it rang me to say that he was so busy due to the wind damage, but he'd send someone else who does odd jobs for him. So this chap (Steve) rings me yesterday, he's really nice and agrees to all my demands (cos I can be quite demanding when it comes to TV) and says he can do it today. So I take my naff excuse of a portable ariel back to argos and get my money back and look forward to real TV again. I didn't go home straight from work cos I go to night school and while I'm there I get a phone call from Steve's boss asking me if I know anything about what happened and can I shed any light on it, he sounds really upset. I don't know what he is talking about and he tells me Steve is dead. I didn't know cos I've not been here all day. I don't know all the details; he'd started the job because his ladders are still up on the roof. When I got home tonight his daughter arrived to take the van, but the police have taken the keys. Poor lass were heartbroken. She said he'd died from bleeding on the brain. I don't know if he fell from the roof or collapsed by his van (where he was found) I don't know and have never met Steve but I still feel quite upset and I keep wondering if he knew what was coming and was he scared or if it was quick and he new nothing (I hope so) His poor family. It's so tragic to lose a member of your family so suddenly like that :( Marmoset 18-01-2005, 10:08 PM Oh my Bob, thats terrible. Must have been a terrible shock for all concerned. On the other hand it was very lucky for the old lady that your caring boyfriend stopped for her. dab 27-01-2005, 06:29 AM I exercised Consumer Power yesterday, and it was great! One of my daughters gave me a pair of PC headphones for my birthday, but they didn't work. She bought them just before Christmas from a high street electrical goods retailer and paid with her credit card, having confirmed that they provide a 28 day refund service (essential to cover the time lag between present-buying and present-giving in January). Yesterday my younger daughter took them back for her sister, and the store refused to give a refund. The manager said their refund period is 14 days, not 28. Someone must have made a mistake. Tough. Go away. I dragged myself out of my sickbed, did this  , and rang them up. I got a pleasant, helpful shop assistant who was happy to give me her name and that of the manager. I explained what had happened and she confirmed that 14 days is company policy. So I told her that two things were going to happen, the first being that I would advise my daughter to get a chargeback. "What's a chargeback?" she asked. I explained that dissatisfied customers can apply for a refund via their credit card provider. The merchant bank withholds the funds from the shop while it's being investigated. It's a messy business. "Right," she said, and I thought I could hear her smiling. "And what's the second thing that's going to happen?" "I'm a journalist. I'm about to write an article about your shop, on the subject of customer service. You might like to tell your manager. And would you like my telephone number?" A definite smile at the other end. "Yes, please." Mrs Dab was giving me a right ear-bending two minutes later about there's a war on and all you can think about is bloody headphones and you can't beat these people and I don't know why you waste your time, when the phone rang. "Mr Dab? My manager said that although it is company policy, the 14 days thing, he will be very happy on this occasion to give you a full refund. And he's very sorry for your daughter's wasted trip." Big smile - I could hear it. The sweetest thing about it? As I crawled back to bed I murmured to Mrs Dab, "and that's how you do that . Andrea 27-01-2005, 11:51 AM Oh well done Dab. I had been as it happend, so I said "Yes". She then asked me if my name was Karen, which worried me a bit! I was wracking my brains to think where I'd met her and nothing was coming to me. I've since been to Jersey twice on business and for one horror-struck moment I thought she might be a disgruntled client coming to seek me out in Morden!  Anyway, she went on to say that she had been in Jersey with her boyfriend on the same weekend, and had seen me coming out of a shop laughing my head off with a man (that'd be Mr H). She immediately recognised me as someone she sees on the tube in the morning and pointed me out to her boyfriend......who recognised me from school!!!!!!!!  (Frankie Cavanaugh - we played husband and wife in the school play). Small world eh? Anyway, she has been trying to spot me ever since and today was the first day she'd seen me. I thought it was quite brave of her to come up to me and tell me the story - seriously, talking to a stranger on the tube is enough to get you sectioned! But, I'm glad she did cos we had a good old chat all the way into London and the 45 minute jouney flew by in the wink of an eye. She's a great girl! But almost best of all is the fact that, during our conversation, she revealed that her and Frankie are doing loads of work on their house and have found a brilliant carpenter. And it just so happens that I have been looking for a chippie for ages, and have now got his number! I plan to call him tomorrow and get him round ofr a quote sharpish. Anyway, I thought that was an interesting start to my day. I wonder what Frankie looks like these days? He was quite the looker at 16....... Cheekychops 28-01-2005, 09:47 PM An interesting thing happened to me today. I found this great forum and decided to give it a bash. Hey, I'll take a look if you'd like me to. floopy 29-01-2005, 02:33 PM Well actually yes I do have something to report today. We decided to go swimming this morning, bundled up the small person and all our kit, drove to the leisure centre only to find that the pool was closed for refurbishment. We drove to another leisure centre, arrived at 10.45, bought tickets and were told that although the baby pool was currently being used for swimming lessons, it would be open again at 11.00. We eventually found the changing rooms (no direction signs). The communal area was locked, so I had to change myself and the baby one handed (the baby changing table was screwed to the floor 8 feet away from the cubicle, with no family changing room available, oh and no nappy bin either. We got in the main pool, 80% of which was roped off for swimming lessons, and were then told not to go beyond a certain point as Gigi is a 'non-swimmer' (durr) which left us with an area fo approx 10sq ft to swim in. Also the water was freezing cold. At 11 o'clock the baby pool emptied and we moved over and got in. Within 30 seconds we were asked to leave as they had another class waiting. By this time Gigi was v clod and grumpy so we got out - the showers were way too hot, again I had to get myself anf Gigi dried and dressed one handed, and then left with wet hair as they didn't provide hair driers. I am seriously miffed. Thank you for your forbearance, I feel much better now. Flip 29-01-2005, 02:45 PM You know Floops I would be a bit miffed too. We used to go regularly to a pool one night after school - and there were always lessons then - but I sort of expected it, it being a school night etc etc. But hey - Saturday mid morning?? That is a bit naughty, surely the people who want lessons and/or training should be doing it much much earlier or one night after school - not when Mr and Mrs Floopy [just a random name] and baby go swimming!! My daily report consists of very very little - my sister came over with my birthday pressie - which was some chef whites - oh I look so professional in them - I am such a happy bunny,:) dinner anyone??? Buzz 29-01-2005, 02:50 PM dinner anyone??? Yes please Flip......something exotic.........and spicy, need spice today floopy 29-01-2005, 02:52 PM Ooooh yes, I have dreams about Flip's cooking. Me and Buzz are on our way Flipster Buzz 29-01-2005, 02:52 PM Floopy, I hope you didn't just leave. I hope you caused an almighty fuss and got your money back at least. You were done big style, they must have known there were more lessons due and should not have told you you could use the baby pool. :ranting: floopy 29-01-2005, 02:55 PM We did just leave actually, cos G was v grumpy, but you're right, I should have. I might well write to them and tell them quite how sh ite they are karenh 29-01-2005, 03:04 PM I have just had a massive shopping spree, but didn't actually spend a penny of my own money. My family are hopeless at buying presents without guidance, so every Christmas / birthday, they all ring me up and ask me what I want them to buy me (I never get a surprise) . If I can't actually think of anything, I always ask for vouchers and when this happens my predictable family will always choose 1 of two shops to get the vouchers from - M&S or Boots. The Boots vouchers are always spent immediately. The M&S vouchers languish in a drawer where I forget about them, because I never go into that shop. Today though, I came across them and decided to do a count. £275 worth of vouchers!! Suddenly, I had a good reason to go to M&S. I have now got loads of completely co-ordinated, luxurious underwear, a couple of new sports bra's, 2 pairs of posh tights, a hat, some new gloves, a chunky belt and a beef and horseradish sandwich. And I've still got £20 left! A good day so far! Andrea 29-01-2005, 08:36 PM I've had a lovely day at home with the kids, hubby's been out bait digging and is presently fishing the north sea. The kids have been playing so nice together, hardly any arguments and they helped me tidy up. We went through the mountain of toys in the living room, tidied them up and took half of them upstairs. Then we went through all their toys upstairs in their room and tidied them up as well. But, my question is, how come, when they are upstairs with me, I go back down stairs and the once tidy living room had toys all over the place. Masters of disappearing, getting toys out downstairs and re-appearing back upstairs without me knowing, my kids are unbelievable:wacko: Flip 29-01-2005, 09:11 PM But, my question is, how come, when they are upstairs with me, I go back down stairs and the once tidy living room had toys all over the place. My first guests arrived at 7.30pm - and the lounge [which had been spotless] was littered, and I mean littered with books, staplers, hole punch's and the remants of, and some colouring pens ... needless to say I was furious and sent Mr F to bed with no tea!!!! :wink2: floopy 29-01-2005, 10:09 PM Ooh, I forgot to tell you, my daughter is a thief! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/29/29_3_10.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNxdm22755GB) Cockney took her to a shop today in her buggy, got his two bags of shopping and paid for them, got back to the car only to find the evil minx clutching a bag of Werthers chewy toffees in her grubby mits!
