I know sometimes things happen to us all that are worthy of a mention here - but quite often I sometimes think that I don't want to start a thread on it cos it perhaps is not that interesting to others: hence this thread.

So if you have any worthy news item that has happened to you or yours post it here.

Here is my todays entry:

My sister has recently taken over a pub in a sleepy backwater of Northumberland. And Mr F stayed over last night, as he was doing an overnight job of re-doing the kitchen floor. [obviously couldn't do it during the day].

But he came home this afternoon full of a real scandal. Oh so thrilling for all involved and the population of the village. The Police arrived unannounced in their thousands at my sisters pub, [a real shocker for this tiny remote village - and OK thousands is a bit of an exaggeration - but at least 12 cars and vans full]. Declaring to Mr F and my sis - that they had had reports of an armed robbery at my sisters pub and a simultaneous break in at the Doctors surgery.

My sis had had 4 contractors staying in the hotel - and one was unaccounted for. So the police did a village wide search and found this missing contractor hiding in a bush whistling!!! [about 400 yards from the pub][bizarre - I know!!] He had broken into the doctors surgery and was hiding.

Then the OIC [a sgt, an ex colleague of my hubby's] then announced that the intervention firearms team would be entering the building and would be going in with guns blazing to retrieve the remaining 3 contractors who had retired to their bedrooms. Mr F put his foot down and said no way are 20 hairy arsed, guns a'blazin, firearms intervention team were storming into my sis's home [pub/hotel] to get these blokes. So he went upstairs - told them [the remaining contractors] that the police were outside with guns and they'd better get their butts downstairs immediately or else. Which they did.

They were all carted off, the three were later released. The fourth was bailed!! Seemingly he had recieved some sort of 'Dear John' letter whilst working away from home and decided to go out with a bang - but he wimped out and phoned the cops with a warning!!

People do odd things in times of stress.

But it gave the people of the village a real good gossip and excitement. My sister and the girls in the pub were all of a flap with these hundreds of cops floating around looking all macho with their AK47's strapped to their shoulders!

I like to hear about what is going on in other posters lives, so I like this type of thread.

It was lucky Mr F was there to stop the police storming in to get the other three!

Let me get this right - the guy broke into the doctors, then lost his bottle and called the police to tip them off - then he his in the bush whistling!! How strange!! It's the whistling bit that made me giggle!

Nothing much of interest going on in my neck of the woods

I just looked at my left hand and saw a gaping hole in my engagement ring where a great big diamond used to be  . I have never felt so scared in my entire life :( .

Just spent half an hour turning the house upside down. and thankfully I found it on the kitchen floor.

I need a drink.

This may not be particularly interesting, but it threw me a bit - we have just received our first Christmas card. It's from a family that used to be neighbours of Sandy's family in Chicago, but who have since returned to the UK. Each year we get a card + one of those what we have been doing letters that go out to friends and family. Now, I don't usually mind letters like that, but theirs are simply depressing. THey are always full of really morbid stuff, usually focussing on Granny who seems to have a never ending stream of life threatening illnesses to contend with, and which take about two pages of A4 to describe. I couldn't believe that they are now sending this stuff out in early November. But at least the gloom I'm now feeling after reading about Granny's bowel operation will have lifted come Christmas!

Which reminds me...we went to a funeral the other week, an elderly aunt of my husband. We heard the other day that one of her elderly friends was getting ready to come to the funeral that morning, and dropped down dead is his funeral suit  .

How ironic is that?

Between them, the two parties spent over $1billion on the election campaign in the US.

Seems like a remarkably small amount of money to persuade 65million American what a great president George W. Bush is.

$8.33 per voter for both parties combined.

Bush polled 4million more votes than Regan in his landslide of 1984.

All points towards a more insular US for the next 4 years.

Less great is the fact that my Trainer made me enter a 5 minute charity rowing challenge at the gym this morning. Now I love excercise but hate the blummin rower, so it almost killed me. I managed almost 1000 metres in 5 mins and was third on the leader board when I left, but I won't be doing that again in a hurry

Again, not sure how interesting this will be! But it might be for anyone thinking of buying a DVD player or whose VCR is getting old.

I have just ordered something called a DVD recorder. what this is, it is like a VCR except it records onto DVD rather than tape. So you get much better quality recordings, in fact as close to the original as makes no difference. You can also use it as a DVD player.

The thing about these DVD recorders is that the prices are tumbling and there are some real bargains now. For instance, the one I have bought, a year ago its predecessor sold for £550 and that was considered a bargain, this latest model is much better, three months ago it was selling for £300 but today you pay £180.

One clever thing about it is that if you want to you can watch the start of a programme while you are recording the end of it. A bit like sky plus. So, say you go out and record a movie while you are out and get back before it has finished, if you want to you can start watching it from the beginning while it is still recording the end. Ooh.

As I said, I thought this might be of interest because DVD recorders would now seem to be an obvious replacement for VCRs (and DVD players - one DVD recorder replaces a DVD player + VCR)

Cat

That was interesting to me (if not a little long winded). For I bought a new DVD playing back in Easter. Not knowing much at all about these things thought £64 including 64 dvd films was good value (mostly Bruce Lee).

Spent two days trying to work out how to record.

I know now.

Nice to see you SF, I did wonder where you had been.

Minklemar
04-11-2004, 05:24 PM
I've got a DVD recorder too - it's much better than a VCR becase the quality of recordings doesn't being to 'go' as the DVD gets older and gets a lot of use.
Also, if it's something you want to keep you can cut all the add breaks out.

I can't watch the begining while still recording the end on mine though :(

Well, after finally gathering all in the info' needed to fill in the Expression Of Interest form for NZ immigration online, we find that the bluddy link won't work and we can't access the forms. The moronic staff at NZI's London call centre are hopeless and can't help and as it's now Saturday morning in NZ the Wellington office is closed :ranting: Now we have to wait until Sunday evening after 6pm our time to call Wellington and ask them to check their site. Hurrah!

Today we managed to sort the annoying computer problem that prevented us submitting our immigtation forms to NZIS Online and I am pleased to say that after 3 hours spent filling them in they have now gone and we have now officially applied for residency in NZ :) Now all we have to do it wait and see if they invite us to the next stage. The most important thig is that you have a job to go to and are in a priority occupation (Mr V has, and we both are) and we have more than enough points to qualify. Our downfall could be the medical because both Mr V and Sam have Crohn's, although Mr V has been in remission for 15 years now and the Medical Council of New Zealand are not worried about his ability to work. We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed on that one.

In other news, I have almost finished my Christmas shopping and have wrapped half of it too. Hah! How's that for efficiency? ;)

So glad peej - :D but don't you dare tell me you came here and didn't let me know??:(

2 sort of interesting things happened to me today and yesterday - but as I wasn't here couldn't tell you and as they are both related I will condense them.

I feinted twice!!

Yesterday when I caught the back end of a programme about an operation, had to watch it but knew I felt a bit woozy - so ended up feinting.

And I pulled a burns dressing off a really bad burn, in the shower this morning and it really really really hurt and whilst I was doing it I saw a big hole in my arm and so once again I feinted.

Oh and I have discovered the killer of my ducks!! It is a mink. It killed Peachy, Pippa and Fabian Perkins - we got 5 more [un-named {thankfully}] but it killed the Mummy Aylesbury, left the baby aylesbury/mallard cross for dead but got a severe peck from my big male Muscovy. We saw it - and have set traps for it - so hopefully in days to come I can report the death of the killer mink!!

Dolores

Are you wearing your corset too tight Flippy!?

Are you a bit concerned? Fainting twice seems rather excessive and a bit show offy if you don't mind me saying so! Anyway hope you are feeling a lot more hale and hearty now!

As for that mink - when you've trapped and killed it perhaps you could make a small garment out of it, perhaps gloves or a stole - let us know and post up the pictures.

Sorry to hear about your poor old ducks - it must be terrifying for the ones that are left.

But I required a tetanus shot and a course of antibiotics from the doctor

I saw a card in a card shop (suprisingly) yesterday which had a cartoon of a 40 yr old woman on it and arrows pointing to various parts of the anatomy and dress of the woman.

I had to laugh out loud and immediately thought of ILS when it said (with an arrow pointing to tee-shirt with band name on) that - 'You know you've hit 40 when you develop an unhealthy obsession for boy bands!'

Sorry ILS but it did make me chuckle even though I know you're only 21! ;)

Actually Coastie I am only 18 :glare:

At 2.55pm this afternoon, I was chopping shallots in the kitchen - when Mr F exclaimed, very loudly and shockedly [I know that isn't a word really] 'Oh S***' - so I looked up and saw this huge dog fox on the bank behind the drive, looking at a small clutch of my chickens. Not more than 20 feet from me and not more than 15 feet from my chickens.

So he dived into his cupboard, retrieved his rifle - I was glued to the spot, desperate to bang on the window to warn the chickens but not wanting to bang on the window to disturb the fox so Flippy [male] could get a good shot at him.

He ran out in bare feet and took aim - and got it, it ran into the woods, closely followed by my three dogs - and 15 mins later Mr F came back with a dead dog fox, twice as big as Fanny.

I took a few pictures to show our neighbour whose animals have been worried by it [and the blasted mink]. But they say they are too big to upload onto here to show you. How can I do it??

Peej, Please tell us why you only had one shoe on?

It's not actually a long story - quite simple really. Whilst on the bus home from newcastle I had taken off my shoes to put my feet up on the seat to get some kip and when I woke up I could only find one. I was the last one off the bus and was way too tired to search all over for it (it was an old pair of shoes anyway!)

Interesting research reached my desk today.

CHICAGO, Nov. 8 (UPI) --
University of Chicago researchers have determined the size of men's testicles has evolved based on the infidelity of women, The Times of London reported.

Researchers led by Bruce Lahn found in promiscuous species such as chimpanzees, competition for mating privileges does not end with sex, as once inside the female, sperm must battle those of a rival to be the one that fertilizes the egg. To maximize their chances of fatherhood, male chimpanzees have evolved huge testicles and sperm counts for their body size.

Among gorillas, however, females mate only with a dominant male, and
accordingly, gorillas' testicles are tiny.

Human testicles are somewhere in between in size, suggesting while women are not as promiscuous as female chimps, neither are they as faithful as the female gorilla.

The study was published Monday in the journal Nature Genetics.

Today we discovered that a minor alteration made to our house 8 years ago has no building regulations, so we have to apply retrospectively. I only discovered this, when, in a burst of efficiency, I decided to put together all the paperwork we will need to sell our house after Christmas. I suppose it's a good thing I found out now rather than halfway through the sale.

Note to self, do not leave anything to the builder who says he will take care of all the paperwork :glare:

Oh Wow - I am nearly speechless with wonder - ti was just amazing - first a pale green stripey band appeared to the north stretching the full width of the visible sky, in an otherwise pitchblack sky, then the stripes started to shimmer, and turn varying shades of green and deep blue/violet, then above the greens and blues the whole sky turned deep deep pinky red - with the most stunning stars topping this wonder of nature.

The whole thing lasted about 5 mins - we were just all spellbound.

Coastie, woodlice are inherently bouyant. If the earth ever floods, the planet will be taken over by woodlice because they always pop back up. To seal their fate, you need to drop them down the loo then put something heavy on top of them - I'll leave you to decide what.

I have an interesting report, at least it's interesting to me. As a result of a conversation this evening, there's a good chance I'm going to SA for my hols next year.

Coastie

Nox I weed on some of them  ...and apparently they are a distant relation to the lobster hence they can survive a while in the water...what's important is that the pipe from the loo takes the little blighters further down the garden than if I simply drop them out the window. :ranting:

At least 6,000 homes were without water and 12 schools were closed on Thursday after a water main burst.
Anglian Water engineers said the pipe was located under an electricity cable near Bromham Road south of Bedford, which has complicated repairs.

The company said the water supply will be off at least until mid-afternoon.

Parents were being advised that six schools in Kempton, four in Bedford and three in the Biddenham area have been closed for the day.

Now not having been to a night club for a while I was expecting not to know any of the music. They started off playing all the dancy ravy tunes, that to me all sound the same (how old do I sound)
But then, shock horror, some 60's music came on, some early 90's dance (the original dance that started it all off) and even the Communards:ohmy:
I couldn't believe it. My feet were swishing all over the dance floor.

So he asked me for a cigarette which I gave him to get him away (which he couldn't even smoke properly) but he stayed and spoke utter nonsense to us. then he asked for another cigarette but I only had a few left and I wasn't wasting another one on him so I told him I had none. Then he asked us to buy him a drink, to which my gf was about to do just to get him away but I refused and told him he'd had enough (bad move) and he just went mental! Now the problem is that I'm sat here with about 6 different perfumes on but I like the smell of them all combined. Do you think if I ask hubby for 6 bottles of perfume to reproduce this multi-perfume smell he'll get if for me?

I have just heard that my Mum will have to be in hospital for at least another 12 days, apparently the lumbar puncture results identified something very nasty which could easily flare up again. She was told that she would certainly have died had she not been treated that day. Apparently her only comment, on hearing how much longer she will have to stay, was to say that it was a good job she has finished all her Christmas shopping then!

I went out on the wazz last night and woke up with a stonking hangover...AND I had to go for a smear test first thing this morning!! :( So I took four lots of Alka Seltzer before I left and another two when I finished before going to work, where I sat very miserably before going out to lunch - where a nice lamb shank and mashed potato made me feel SO much better - I would heartily recommend it as a cure all!

(...funny story about a smear. My sis is a nurse and ran a pub once still keeping her job at the doctors practise part time, including doing smears. One morning she went to pick up the bread order from the local bakery for the pub..."hello, I'm the landlady of the George, come to pick up the bread order"...the women behind the counter went white and couldn't speak for a while.......Sis had done her smear early that very morning!!!!)

don't know whether this is interesting or not, but is a major upheaval in the lives of people of North Norfolk.

Today is the last day of ordinary collection of rubbish, we now have to use the new wheelie bins, shock, horror.

There has been such a fuss over this, norfolk people sure don't like change. I personally think they are great. at least it will stop the cats and the vermin around getting into the bags and causing a right mess.

Wheelie bins rule:)

According to my local paper, festive lard stocks are running low:ohmy:

Hi Sheoque. I think the reason is that the job starts on 5 Jan so maybe they are trying to get things done as quickly as poss as I, for one, need to give 4 weeks notice. I must admit I wasn't very happy about it. It also seems a bit daft creating work for the bosses of the 8 people who have been called for interview.

Anyway, I went to see my boss to tell her I was looking for another job and she was great. It's just as well because the letter had already arrived although she hadn't opened it. Of course I blubbed, pathetic I know. I think it was more of a release of tension as I've been pondering telling her I was looking for something for a while and my hand was eventually forced.

Anyway I shall just be keeping my fingers crossed for Friday. It's a rather strange set up actually. All the interviewees are arriving at 9am and will be shown around the building and then interviewed separately for about 20 minutes each, which means that the last person will be hanging around for over 2 hours!! It'll be weird meeting all the people going for the same job plus if I'm last I'll be complete jelly.

Note to self, do not leave anything to the builder who says he will take care of all the paperwork :glare:Update on this pesky problem. A very nice buildings inspector came round today to look at our rogue alteration (a chimney) and after inspecting it has told us that there will be no problem signing it off, the paperwork will be with us in 10 days. Phew!

1) the first christams related illustration has been scribbled on the only clear white board in the office...this will grow and grow in to a masterpiece which will be viewed in awe on the final day as myself and a fellow artistic type add to each each time we're in until Christmas.

2) I managed to freak my area manager out (he is a toad and we always sing the frog chorus when we know he's in the building)....he went very quiet when he heard I was going to the PM's house for egg nog......this is because I absolutely detest his level and higher level of management in the service (as they are all crap and simply empire builders looking to crush the little guys to get on)...and he knows it....in fact he asked one of the guys why he was leaving today and did he want a departure interview...the guy said no not with him....the boss man said he knows the pay isn't that great but hey....the guy who's leaving said 'It's not the pay thet's making me leave it's the management'.....his face was a picture!

3) Everyone wants some of whatever I'm on as I am still bouncing around with a spring in my step.......my station boss is as happy as a pig in poo as he's also leaving because of the higher uppers and he basically said don't let the buggers get me down! :boxing:

Our family has been growing this past couple of years, with the arrival of steady boyfriends/partners for the two oldest of our three daughters. And our oldest girl and her bloke moved into their first home in the Autumn. So Christmas is going to be a sweet time when we'll all be under one roof.

It'll be especially sweet because all three of them are going through change at work/college. They're each looking for somewhere else, for various reasons (workplace unfairness by a cavemen area manager for the 22 year old, workplace bullying by a jealous female for the 19 year old, and a simple "This course isn't right for me anymore" for the 16 year old), so it'll be really good to bounce stuff off one another and give support just by being together again.

What I want to report is that Mrs Dab and I have noticed how supportive the girls are being for each other in their individual crises. It's lovely to see. When we remember the years of fierce competition (and sporadic outbursts of open hostility) between them, it does our hearts good to see them all grown up nice and loving each other.

And I thought there might be one or two of you struggling through the "squabbling kids" years, who might like to hear that it doesn't last forever. :bye:

In the afternoon I'm going to the National Theatre Awards....getting all dolled up in my new outfit...and then it's a quick change into my dress uniform for an evening of egg nog and mince pies with the PM at No.10!...EEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK! My biggest fear is getting a ladder in my tights....never wear the ruddy things and am pants at putting them on so have bought 6 pairs just in case!

I had my first rehearsal for our Christmas play, The Three Gifts. I play 'Gold' and the part is so written for me, pretentious, shallow, somewhat lacking social graces and gaudy. It is a 'nativity' play with a difference - humour and baubles feature heavily.... mainly from yours truly!!

Only trouble is my costume is meagre and the play is being held in our Mart - which is an ancient, round building more used to selling large heiffers .. yeah not so different really then!!

Good luck with the play, flip!

I have an altogether different experience waiting for me at work today. The nativity play for the pre-schoolers where I work. Will there be tears? You betcha! From the kids, the parents and the staff!!

Oh I used to  the nativity plays at pre-school - I hope it went well for you Max....

Flip - good luck with your play - break a leg as they say!

Tonight I am going on my children's pre-school work's Christmas night out. Now my youngest left there about 8 years ago and although I never worked at the pre-school I always get invited. I can't even remember how I was invited in the 1st place now, but they all say their Christmas night out wouldn't be the same without me! This year we are going to the local fish restaurant on the seafront, but I think we are having the traditional Christmas Dinner! I am really looking forward to catching up with them as this is the only time I see them each year ....
