Summary of show on 21st May 2001

The first show saw the 16 challengers being searched as they boarded the Matahari, a boat that was to take them to Pulau Tiga. They weren't allowed to talk to one another and most of them dozed on the journey to the island. The two teams, or tribes as they are called, had already been pre-determined back home in the UK by the Survivor production team.
UnloadingThen, 3 nautical miles out from the island, they were told to take their belongings, board their rafts and paddle to the island. As they jumped into the crystal blue waters, it was the first time that they had spoken to each other. They had two minutes to grab all of their kit for the 40 days of survival. Anything left on the boat was lost. As the tribes paddled off, the camera panned to the deck of the boat where a machete lay.

Once on the beach the tribes set about building shelters. Under Nick's guidance the Ular tribe set about building an A frame shelter. Jackie didn't feel very well and had to sit to one side whilst she recovered.
The Helang tribe started building their lean-shelter under the general directions of Andy. At 4.55 pm they decided they had better go and look for their source of water. Uzma and Simon set off into the jungle... without a compass as it had been lost. It was then rather comical as for the next few hours they searched desperately for the water. "We are in the right area" said Simon, with Uzma saying "I think we need to go this way". Then just as they were about to go back to camp Uzma found the buried bin. Back at the Ulah camp Nick was gving instruction on how to make a fire.

Sausage Man!Mick explained how he had smuggled some sausages onto the island. He wrapped them in cling film and then concealed them on his body.

The next day saw the contestants talking about their nights sleep. Adrian seemed particular concerned that he had seen two rats and a snake during his first night. JJ tried to get the others motivated into looking for food as they had only had a small amount of corned beef each the day before. They managed to catch a small fish. Nobody seemed to know what to do with.. whether to keep it (as a pet! - Haydon) or to eat it. Whilst Andy put it into a fishing basket, Charlotte was getting upset. She kept saying it was cruel. "Look, look it's dead now!" she shouted.Charlotte and others discuss the fate of the fish
Richard of the Ular tribe had a major find. He found a lighter with some fuel still in it washed up on the beach. They managed to get it to work and built a fire.
The Ular tribe went in search of food and using a net got several fish out of the pool by their camp.

Day 3 saw the the two tribes perparing themselves for their first immunity challenge. Nick pulled Zoe to one side and explained how he thought they should form an alliance. He suggested five of them form an alliance and that alliance should vote for Jackie if the Ulah tribe had to vote. Zoe agreed and said that she had been thinking the same.
Helang celebrateThe immunity challenge was a race to light a row of torches placed along a sand spit, whilst carrying a raft weighing some 200lb. The Helang tribe took the lead but at the last moment Ulah tribe managed to get their bowl of fire on the fire god alight first. However, Ulah's rejoicing quickly turned to silence when they were informed they had been disqualified for not lighting one of the lamps. Ulah tribe would be going to Tribal Council the next day in order to vote one of their members off.
When Mick was asked "Who's loss would most damage the tribe", he replied "I would go for Nick" and then reasoned it was because Nick had the most skills.
Richard wrote the name "Nick" on the paper and whilst holding it up said "He doesn't say please, he doesn't say thank you."
The votes were counted and it was 3 votes for Jackie and 5 for Nick. Nick put out his lamp of fire, the fire representing his life on the island.
During Nick's final words he said "I may have pushed to hard".
It was Nick who had left the machete on the Matahari and he also failed to light the torch in the immunity challenge. He took control too early and it upset the rest of the tribe. Nick was on his way home....
